Role-Playing Games / Oriental Adventures (D20)
« on: February 22, 2003, 12:51:54 PM »
I got this on thursdays. Damn me, its a nice book. It has a cover and interior art and presentation superior to any other RPG book i have ever seen, including the big three (PHB/MM/DMG - i own all three. makes me happy, but not very rich). It is based around the setting of "Five Rings" which is quite an interesting setting, and i like the taint rules and the  oni spirits. In fact, i like all the spirits in this book. Gotta love the Doc Cu'o'c, a guy split in half (1 arm, i leg, half a face and torso etc) or what the Dokufu? I really like the dragons too. They are as powerful as the MM dragons, but much cooler (and wierder. very wierd indeed).

Oh, Spriggan : a question. What does "Hentei" mean in japanese? Its the name of the Imperial Royal Family Dynasty. Apparently it means "Anti Imperial", showing the five rings authors lack of japanese i suppose.

Everything Else / Britain and the EU
« on: February 22, 2003, 07:20:13 AM »
I’ve been thinking about the EU a lot lately. Most people in Britain have, to one degree or another. I had an interesting thought. It is generally thought here that when Tony Blair gives up his fanciful notions of being a EU president, and when Brussels finalises its daft constitution (which features the biggest power grab in history) then Britain will retreat to a position of being a economic partner (ie gaining all the possible benefits of the EU) but will not have any of the monetary or political baggage (ie all the disadvantages). This could have some interesting effects. Since the EU will, when the 10 member countries join, have 470 million people in it then a lot of companies are gonna want to get in on the action – that’s a hellava big market – and they are going to want to build factories offices etc in a lace that is cheapest, right? Well, since Britain does not have any of the continental leftist anti business laws, none of the unemployment the bureaucrats over there adore so much, and taxes that are so small in comparison as to be negligible, but will have the benefits of EU economic partnership (no tariffs allowed etc) then we will be the obvious choice. The UK already has masses of Japanese and US investment (most leftover from when their economies allowed investment) and all this, plus the fact that “plucky blighty” is being best mates with America while the frogs are up to their old tricks means that Britain could soon be rolling in foreign investment, allowing us to make a very neat benefit, partly at the expense of the French. I like that last part.

The route to victory for the UK :
1) do what the Norwegians do – economic partnership, not political slavery
2) Restart the empire. Iraq isn’t about oil – its about imperialism obviously
3) Invade France and put every lefty politician and bureaucrat found within Paris to the sword.

Role-Playing Games / Hogshead no more
« on: January 16, 2003, 07:34:13 PM »
this is probably of no interest, but Hogshead publishing have stopped. they are selling off all stock, and closing shop.
Nobilis, their latest game that ive heard is very good, is going to its Canadian publisher. cant remember who said publisher is tho.
The rights toWarhammer Fantasy Roleplay is reverting to Games Workshop. speculation in the various fan sites is that GW will either liscence it out to another publisher or publish it itself, especially if it can be linked into Warhammer Online. interestingly enough, the WHRP fans arnt very happy about this, as they are all fans of what the warhammer world looked like 15 years ago, and dont like games workshops latest takes on it.

If you want to know the reasons for the company closing, i found a Interview with James Wallis, the man who started the company in the first place. interesting read.

Everything Else / My country is ruled by morons

"If someone is carrying a weapon that could potentially kill someone, then I think the proper punishment for that crime is imprisonment. But if someone is committing a burglary, although that is a serious event for the victim of the burglary, and I don't underestimate that, for the person who has committed the crime and if it's their first crime, I don't think prison is the answer."
- Jackie Ballard, Director of the RSPCA and former Liberal MP

That is what tony "nobhead" blair and his labour cronies are saying, only not so bluntly (they dont have the balls to).

help.
emigration is the only answer...

Video Games / making a online warhammer?
« on: January 02, 2003, 02:34:34 PM »
a question for spriggan. is it possible for you to create a online recreation of warhammer tabletop? ie, make a program that people could use to choose an army, generate a opponent (or choose one, whatever) pick a battlefield and scenario and then play it out using the full set of warhammer rules? it is actually possible to do such a thing?

Video Games / Hunter : The Reckoning Impressions
« on: December 13, 2002, 02:15:41 PM »
heh. thought id nick Mr P's format :P
got this on rental. fun little game, pretty brainless.
the RPG elements are like the nutritional elements of Mc Donalds - they are there if you look really close, but they arent anything to write home about. just a way of gradually increasing the players power feally.
What i want to know tho, is whether the game conforms to the hunter RPG. ive never read or played Hunter. ive got Vampire, and im rather confused since hunter is about zombies, which had a negligible presence in vampire (barring the Giovanni clan strongholds).
the wierd thing about H:TR is that its very heavily orientated towards multiplayer. its like Serious sam - the game can be played in single player, but its in Multiplayer Co-op mode with a bunch of mates that it comes alive. at least, i think thats what the developers meant. ill have to test the multiplayer overr the weekend.

Everything Else / Revocation of American Independance
« on: November 23, 2002, 07:09:09 AM »
this is a file ive been searching for... i just found it again. it was made and circulated among british peeps online during the presidental election shambles.

Quote
Notice of Revocation of Independence To the citizens of the United States of America,

In the light of your failure to properly elect a President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective today.

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths and other territories. Except Utah, which she does not fancy. Your new prime minister (The rt. hon. Tony Blair, MP for the 97.85% of you who have until now been unaware that there is a world outside your borders) will appoint a minister for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire will be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed.

To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

1. You should look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary. Then look up "aluminium". Check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it. Generally, you should raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. Look up "vocabulary". Using the same twenty seven words interspersed with filler noises such as "like" and "you know" is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. Look up "interspersed".

2. There is no such thing as "US English". We will let Microsoft know on your behalf.

3. You should learn to distinguish the English and Australian accents. It really isn't that hard.

4. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as the good guys.

5. Arrest Mel Gibson for repeated treason.

6. You should relearn your original national anthem, "God Save The Queen", but only after fully carrying out task 1. We would not want you to get confused and give up half way through.

7. You should stop playing American "football". There is only one kind of football. What you refer to as American "football" is not a very good game. The 2.15% of you who are aware that there is a world outside your borders may have noticed that no one else plays "American" football. You will no longer be allowed to play it, and should instead play proper football. Initially, it would be best if you played with the girls. It is a difficult game. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which is similar to American "football", but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds and wearing full Kevlar body armour like nancies). We are hoping to get together at least a US rugby sevens side by 2005.

8. You should declare war on Quebec and France, using nuclear weapons if they give you any merde. The 97.85% of you who were not aware that there is a world outside your borders should count yourselves lucky. The Russians have never been the bad guys. "Merde" is French for *cough*!

9. July 4th is no longer a public holiday. November 8th will be a new national holiday, but only in England. It will be called "Indecisive Day".

10. Enjoy warm steak and kidney pudding. Train waitresses to be more aggressive with customers and not to tell you their names before you eat.

11. All members of this British Crown Dependency will be required to take 6 weeks annual vacation and observe statutory tea breaks.

12. Driving on the left is now compulsory. Recall all cars to effect the change immediately. Reedit all Hollywood car chase movies beginning with the Keystone Cops to prepare public awareness. (Selling them again as re-releases is acceptable.)

13. Stop referring to the World Series of Baseball and instead call it the National Series of USA, Cuba, and Japan.

Tax collectors from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all revenues due (retroactive to 1776).

Thank you for your cooperation.

Video Games / Online Consoles
« on: November 08, 2002, 10:14:27 AM »
so it seems that all of the various console companies recently have tried to do the online thang. i must say, from what i have seen X-box live looks really sweet. and when everyone on the servers is using broadband, it frees up the developers to increase the bandwidge needs. which is nice. not as nice as everyone having voicecom, but still really nice.
but what about the other consoles? are they trying for online still, or did they give it up?

Diana, Princess of Wales {royal woman guy}
Queen Elizabeth I {virgin queen guy}
John Lennon {singer guy}
Horatio Nelson {admiral, war hero guy}
Sir Isaac Newton {physicist guy}
William Shakespeare {boring guy}

Video Games / Morrowind
« on: September 27, 2002, 04:42:59 AM »
yeah i know we already had a topic on this.

spriggan : are u doing a review? just i got it yesterday, and if you arnt, ill start taking notes for one. its quite good from what i have seen - and its long. i like my RPG's to last me a long time - i felt that BG2 was too short would you believe? this time, nonlinearity means lots of replay value. BG2 is no fun the second time around.

actually, it just occured to me that we could do a vs review - NWN against morrowind. like a review of both, but with a conclusion saying which we think is best. ive not played NWN so i cant make any comments on it (apart from the graphics looking slightly underwhelming).

Role-Playing Games / D&D player registry
« on: September 22, 2002, 03:32:07 PM »
http://www5.brinkster.com/mshensley/default.asp
it is, as you may have gathered, a player registry. does all versions, as well as hackmaster. its a nice idea, and i thought it obviously works best when there are more people using it.

Role-Playing Games / real world vs fantastic worlds
« on: September 19, 2002, 11:36:31 AM »
heres an interesting thing. i find that im more interested in Call of cthulhu and its rules than DnD, despite an identicle(sp) system. the only reason i can think of is that its all very well imagining galinus the elf fighting in a smoky building, but when you imagine Johnathan, the chalet turned investigator from san fransisco, it suddenly become more immediate. this just me, or does anyone else get this?
