Brandon Sanderson / Re: What should I read next?
« on: November 08, 2009, 04:22:06 AM »
I am sorry, but I'll disagree. As far as worldbuilding goes, I think Modesitt is decent. However his writing style was absolutely horrid to me. I read the first two books, because a friend whose opinion I value a lot recommended them to me. I ended up in a situation where I would read, and read, and read, hoping that the writing will get better. It didn't.

It might be that I am overreacting, but there were times when I couldn't read more than 10 pages in one sitting.

Oh, and the sound effects. He wouldn't say that a horse whinnied. He would type the sound the horse would produce. It was extremely annoying to me...

I am really happy how the thread is going :)
These days are a little busy for me, so I can't spend the time I want to comment on the posts, but I'll get to theme eventually. :)

I stand corrected. But I never claimed all of their actions disappear from the Pattern.

Quote
it makes me wonder if Brandon thinks balefire destroys souls. I hope not. (Balefire interfears with the method the Dark One uses to resurrect dead Forsaken, but that's specific. It doesn't destroy souls or prevent rebirth.)

Um... that's exactly what it does? By definition it burns one's thread from the Pattern. They disappear completely, utterly, and with finality.

Brandon Sanderson / Magic Systems
« on: November 05, 2009, 09:00:57 AM »
Brandon Sanderson is, I think by popular opinion, well-known for his unique and real magic systems.  Feel free to refer to his Sanderson's First Law essay about his opinion on what makes a magic system believable and interesting. I won't summarize it, as I suspect many of us have already read the article. I will, however, quote the Law:
Quote from: Sanderson's First Law of Magics
: An author's ability to solve conflict with magic is DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL to how well the reader understands said magic.

With all this in mind, and the fact that some of the users in this forum are probably young and aspiring authors, I thought I'd create a game of some sort. Well, not exactly a "game", but a fun and productive activity, which also happens to be a helpful mind exercise, I think. A place to create magic.

Before I go any further, I want to explicitly state that I have no intentions to ask anyone to reveal their writing secrets. If you think you have a magic system so good it will get your novel/short story published, and you don't want to share it - that's great! But if you want to just practice and write some interesting stuff subject to critique from other readers and possibly writers, I think this will be a very interesting place for you to be in.

So here is the deal. You will create a model for a magic system and post it here. It doesn't matter of it's a rough draft, or a system finished to its smallest of details. Post something. Or if you have nothing (like me at the moment, although I am working on an idea), take a look at what others have posted and discuss it with them. Provide feedback, help the rest of the users improve. Let's see if we can start a decent creative process going.

Now, as I said, I have nothing to offer. For now. So I will leave the topic as it is, and see where things are going. Hopefully I will be able to supply my own sample, and we can start from there if things are not getting anywhere. Only time will tell what will happen.

Let magic reign!

*stares defiantly*

Inde muaghde Aes Sedai misain ye!

I appreciate a challenge!

However, going back to the topic at hand - I have no issues with Egwene growing. Light knows, it was about time she really took control over her supporters, instead of just letting them scheme.  But such a drastic change... And even assuming she was capable of changing so much, the voice in that speech wasn't hers. I did not hear Egwene speak - at least not most of the time. Her comments about shame and duty were alright. But the rest really felt - to me - like something one of Sanderson's male leaders would say (e.g. Raoden, Kelsier, Elend).

Yes, I am well aware of this. But her conversations with the Novices in the Tower, with the other Aes Sedai, with Elaida and Meidani, and even with Siuan - none of them portrayed her as forceful as she seemed in that last speech. And that is not necessarily a bad thing - it might be intended, to show growth and all that.

I recall Brandon, Dan and Howard discussing writing groups in one of their Writing Excuses podcasts, and one of the things mentioned there was that one of the best critiques an author can receive is one that tells him how the reader felt, not what he thought. Well, I am just trying to explain how I felt about Egwene there at the end - I felt that she was a little off :)

I think they simply had Preservation manifest itself as multiple spirits. Remember when Alendi's logbook spoke of how a creature looking as if it were made of mist stabbed (at least) one of the people in his group? Well, apparently Brandon only had multiple creatures do the same thing. Going down to one made it easier to associate the spirit with Preservation (single "being"), I think, and it was a good thing, in my estimation.

Oh, something I just thought of. Or recalled rather.

Egwene's speech from the last (?) chapter felt a little out of character for her I think. I am by no means an expert, but to me it felt like the speech was coming from somebody far more forceful, willful, even manful than Egwene. I realize her words were supposed to be as I describe them - forceful, willful - but I think it was too much of those things.

It might be just me, of course. But I think words like this would come from someone like Mat, when he gets carried away by his instinctual memories (e.g. when he came up with a battle plan against Shaido in minutes, while Lan & co. too hours).

ArgentSun, i believe u are confusing two different authors.  Steven Erikson is the name of the author who writes the Malazan books, and David Eddings is another author whom Brandon has also suggested at some point

Right. I was in the train this morning, thinking "Crap, I wrote Eddings instead of Erikson!". Unfortunately you caught me before I could fix it :)

David Eddings had... Belgariad? I can't remember the names, but they were also splendid books. More humorous than the epic fantasy I like, but good nonetheless. Mostly.

Pratchett is always a good choice. I've enjoyed Raymond Feist quite a lot, and he was my favorite author before I got my hands on Elantris and Mistborn. Start off with the Riftwar Saga (Magician, Master Magician, Darkness at Sethanon), and then just see what's next chronologically - there are quite a few books. The story might get a little repetitive after a while, but the language is beautiful enough to make up for it, I think. Language and characters. Oh, and cosmology. And a few other things I can't think of right now...

Another option would be Steven Eddings (sp?) and his Malazan Book of the Fallen. I've said it before, and I'll repeat - I think Brandon's style is somewhat dark, which is something I completely adore. Well, Eddings's style is horribly morbid at times. I think he is very much like Martin in some ways - killing his old characters off, because they are getting old, and then introducing new ones, and killing them too, because they are too new. Funstuff. If you do decide to go with Eddings, keep in mind that usually the first half of each book will look boring and alien, because all of this knowledge about the world is being dumped down on you, and there is very little explanation. And then the second half will make your jaw drop every second page.

And another option would be David Farland's Runelords. I really don't have a whole lot to say about them (because I rarely remember much of a book after I've read it only once), but they are good in pretty much every aspect of the fantasy literature.
