Title: Sweeney Todd

A movie adaptation of the Sondheim musical, with Johnny Depp as Sweeney and Tim Burton producing. It looks good on the surface, but...my faith in and respect for Burton is dropping so rapidly, I simply don't trust him anymore. It doesn't help that this is one of my favorite musicals, so I'm being more possessive than usual.

My big worry is that Burton will do his usual thing and focus on being weird and ignore the characters, and Sweeney is a very tense, emotional show entirely rooted in its characters. I suppose the fact that he's only producing will tone that down a bit, but I guess we'll see.

Also, no disrespect for Depp, but it's very hard for me to see him in this role. I think he could do it, but...his Wonka was so bad. I don't know.

I know this is way after you've originally posted. But Depp's wonka wasn't that terrible. Weird: yes. But I think that was what he was aiming for. I didn't like his interpretation personally but I don't think he did a poor job.

That is discussed here: http://www.timewastersguide.com/forum/index.php?topic=3517.0

I did reread the book soon after that thread, and my comments were completely justified.
