Random Trivia...gotta know!

Okay guys, I have GOT to know this...for those who live in Provo...look out your window, (facing the west?) and tell me just WHAT are those towers out there. You know, the ones that say Provocity!

Yeah, yeah, the towers really say Provo City, but the joke around my apartment is that it really says Provocity, since some kid in my sister's biology class asked them what Provocity meant and it took them the longest time to figure out what he was talking about (if it was one of you, I'm sincerely sorry, but sincerely grateful too, since now we use the word whenever we can).

So! What are they? I seriously ask everyone I know. I even tried to look it up on the internet. Why this curiousity? Dunno.

The electric company? What do they do in those towers? It sounds very sinister to me.

If I were still in Provo I'd have you point them out to me in person.  Or do you have a digital camera?  Can you take a picture for us?

Yeah, I COULD do that! It's just outside. I could take it from my balcony...but once again I'll have to show my ignorance. How do I attach something like that? And of course, we'd have to worry about it being censored by the FEDs. They'd definitely want to cover up a story like this. I'm taking a picture right now!

I'm guessing (like fuzzy thinks) that you're talking about the Provo City Utilities towers. They're two smokestacks that I've never seen used. One (the southmost one, I think) has a red light at the top. You can get up close and personal to them at about 300 West at about 700 north or so.

Or I could be hallucinating. It wouldn't be the first time.

Generally speaking they wont be used at full capacity unless there is a problem. Old plants are notorious polluters and the EPA has some nice regs against burning stacks that dont need to be on. The material coming out would be NOX (or combinations of nitrogen oxides) and carbon dust these things are some of the chief components of acid rain, but also a serious lung hazard that can mess up folks with asthma and other lung ailments. In a place like Utah i.e. Surrounded by mountains the plume from those stacks is unlikely to make it over the mountains, potentially causing a long term problems unless regulated. If another plant on the grid had a failure those stacks would be brought up to up capacity.

They are the two smokestacks for Provo Electricty. They haven't been used for years, but my parents remember going up.

ya that use to be a power generator, both my parents said it was used when they were student's at the Y (long before there was much else near that building).  If I'm not mistaken the original building has been torn down but they left the smoke stacks up as land marks.

Huh? So, they don't work anymore?--and it's a good thing because it would kill us or at least society as we know it? I like it.

And they're up as landmarks?--or is a front? Hmmm

You know what I wanna do? I want to go check it out. I wonder if they do tours or something? I just love these kind of things! If you happen to drive by and my face is pressed against the chain link fence, just ignore me.

BTW, I took a picture, but my digital camera just can't take far off horizon shots...they just look like two shadows in the distance. Oh well, I tried. But you totally know what they are...those towers and the one with the lights. Yeah!

Those are the towers where Peter Parker tried to stash Ben Reilly's body when he thought Ben had died.
Oh wait, that's in New York. Ben was only in SLC for a few months, and Peter never made it there.
