Well, we all have our fav. authors and genres, but what kind of books do you collect and show off on your bookshelf/(shelves)?
I love to collect the "real stories," preferably something that I can associate with a movie. For instance, I have the original story of Peter Pan, 101 Dalmations, Bambi, the Jungle Book, the Boy Who Could Fly, and a couple of versions of Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Aladin (or Arabian Nights, etc.), and Cinderella. Every single one of which is completely opposite of the movie/cartoon. Though that may be because Disney always changes its movies.
At the moment, I'm into children's literature and my bookshelf is bursting with books no more than 100-200 pages. All of it fictional. And where do I go to get all this great literature? Why, DI, of course. Where I can find the best books of my childhood for only 50 cents.

Im starting a 1st edition collection
I have
1st American Printing Hitchikers Guide
An Uncorrected proof of The Sun the Moon and the Stars by Stephen Brust
and a 1st Edition copy of the the Armada by Garret Mattingly.
-
I also have a thing for children's books (as if everyone didn't already know this). Mainly children's fantasy, with several different versions of fairy tale retellings. And then there's the science fiction section, the historical fiction section, the mainstream fiction section, the nonfiction section, and the picturebook section. And then there are the writing books and the family history books and the nonfiction folklore.
And then there's every Calvin and Hobbes collection and several of the littler books. I love Calvin and Hobbes.
I also have a good collection of author-signed books, which I'm very proud of.

"snooty" things
basically anything that shows off how erudite and educated I am. Yes, darn you, I have that copy of Thucydides and what's more, you'll realize it's on a shelf of books I READ. The books have to look nice too. So I have Spanish and English hard bound copies of Don Quijote, The Illustrated Brief History of Time, a set of selections from Arabian Knights, Morte Arthure, the LotR, a Throeau set, and a variety of graphic novels that I put in this set. THere are only two conditions, they have to be smart, and look smart.

I have 26 discworld novels. Want the list?
I collect fantasy. About 75 - 100 books thereof. My collection is split between about 6 authors mainly. Damn prolific fantasy authors...
-
my favorite Discworld novel is Mort...
-
I havent read mort yet but I want, my freinds say it is really good

I mostly collect science fiction and fantasy books, old childrens book series (like Trixie Belden, or the Bobbsey Twins), and editing books. Lots and lots of editing books. And folklore books--I've gained quite a few of those in the past two years.
I've got a bunch of other types--classic literature, chinese and ASL books, mainstream fiction, some nonfiction (mostly books on writing with a smattering of other types), but the majority consists of my list above.
-
Star Trek paperbacks, and novelizations of the Doctor Who episodes.
At least my collections are cheap.
-
I collect second hand books mostly, sci-fi primarily, and pretty much anything I like that I can get my hands on. I want to fill a whole room with books.
Thing is, when I walk into a second hand bookstore, I walk out with a dozen new books and $20 lighter, which I why I do not go into them frequently. Like the time I wanted to just browse around, and I am yet to start any of those books.
-
Hehe Jam, you should see my house then. We have a fairly big house, which is *filled* with books. As i recall, when we put them in storage, we several hundred sq metres of books. And we've acquired a *lot* since then. but anyway.
Um, largely atm, collecting fantasy of all kinds. I'm also starting to build up a collection of computer books and art books.
-
I also have a small but growing history section, which serves as the intellectual section. ;)
-
history/anthroplogy books.
-
History by subject, and a large portion of that by accident or quirk of fate.
Piratical history has occupied a large chunk lately, but I have 25 books on WWII, 5 about Armies and Wars of the 1800's Usually British wars. And Over 30 on the American Civil War.
Plus Latin Textbooks, books on famous places and a fluxuating library of RPG books.

Brenna, we should compare sometime. Of course, I know that we probably have a lot of the same editing books from 330 and 365 (or whatever that was for Mel). At any rate, I'd love to hear about more editing books.
Also, I used to have both Trixie Belden and the Bobbsey Twins as a kid, but I don't know where they've gone. In the course of several moves, the box that held them has disappeared, along with an original Pinocchio that someone gave me a few years back. Makes me sad. :(

I think what I really need to collect are bookshelves...
-
I have a huge book case. Some friends of mine took over her mom's house, and they had a bunch of storage shelves from when they ran a jewelry store. They're just unfinished wood, but they're like 6 feet long by 8 feet high. Each shelf can hold a tall RPG book, but with some spare wood I can turn each shelf into two shelves, so it hold lots of small books too. It's been very handy.

The only book I go about collecting are the old Choose Your Own Adventure Time Machine books, which are pretty cool, and in my opinion much superior to basic Chhose Your Own Adventure. Why?
1. they are based largely on historical fact. you learn something.
2. no dead ends. if you make a wrong decision, it sends you off on a tangent or back to a place you've been before.
3. the decisions are all logical - no guessing involved. If you're thinking (and you do have to think a bit) you can progress to the end of the book by making right decisions. None of that "Oops - you picked the wrong door. Now you die."
There are only 25 of them. I've recently been using Ebay to fill in the holes of my collection.
-
I collect a lot of random science fiction stuff. I inherited the entire Foundation series, and have oddities like Hyperion and Startide Rising lying around.
-
james lee burke novels
-
Wow, Kije, I use to read tons of those Choose Your Own Adventure books! That's actually why I started collecting bookmarks. I'd keep four or five bookmarks for all the places where I wasn't sure what to do, then go back to them if I ended up at a dead end. The only time machine one I remember is the Titanic. Those were great books.

I used to read these CYOA books that were like a little role-playing game. You had 'stats' for your character, and the back page was a little random number generator. You collected stuff (by writing it on your sheet in the back) and used it in your adventure.
Can't remember what they're called. I've still got a couple, though.
-
Lone Wolf EUOL. There's actualy a RPG based off of them that just came out this month.
-
Wow, that sounds like the Mario one where you collected coins and items and had to keep track of it all in the back. I think they only made two or three of them, though.
