Title: Anyone up for Gaming?
Post by: 42 on April 23, 2006, 08:29:29 PM
So I have most of this next week free to do what i want after I finish finals on Tuesday.

I've been dying to play some more Mutants and Masterminds, particularly 2nd ed. (For those of you not familiar with Mutants and Masterminds, it a D20 ogle Super-Heroes setting.)

So I was thinking if anyone in the Utah area was interested, I'd run a game this Saturday the 29th probably starting in the afternoon. I figure about 2 hours to build characters and 3 to 4 hours of play.

So anyone interested?

I'm giving Eagle Prince and Harbinger priority for participation, but I could still use couple more players. After this I start school again and won't have time to plan sessions as much.

Also I'm hoping to get  review for the site out of this.

So did you get 2nd edition?  Hmm, I should think of a guy.  What type of setting do you think?  If more low powered modern, then probably like Rambo or the Punisher with lots of training and skills type of stuff rather than superpowers.  But if starting above power level 10, then maybe someone like Gungrave or Hellsing, or maybe a werewolf.  If its set more like WWII, the Noir setting or whatever it is called, then probably Indiana Jones or a supersoldier like Captain America or the Sentinel (the one from the '96 TV show, about a detective with super-senses he developed while in the army).

Well, I'm thinking power level 10. Which in 2nd Ed. allows you to be rather powerful.

The current setting is in the modern world where some super-villains have taken over the island nation of Malta. They have brought forth a demon to start their conquest and destruction of the world. The heroes must defeat said demon by retrieving some sort of artifact. (I'm thinking maybe some sort of statue--maybe a falcon shaped one.)

Still, I'm open for suggestions, particularly villain ideas and cool features worth adding.

I want to play a ne'er-do-well archaeologist who goes on wacky adventures when he isn't teaching his college history courses. He'll wear a worn brown leather jacket and a fedora, and dual-wield a bullwhip and revolver.
I will give him a good, original name, like... North Carolina Smith.

Okay, I think I have two characters then.

First guy sort of a cross of Rambo and Sentinel.  Basically a commando who got stuck out in the bush for way too long.  So on top of the military training he gets insanely good at survival, stealth, tracking etc from living out in the wild for so long.  But he also kind of loses it and starts thinking the jungle can talk to him.  When he finally leaves, then he has super-senses and maybe some other minor powers.  Maybe some crazy looking eyes and half mad like Wolfbrothers, depends on how supernatural I want his powers.  You get the idea.  Then going off Rambo again, his main weapons would be the trusty survival knife and a compound bow with all sorts of crazy warheads on the arrows.

Alright, the second character is a demon who was a real problem.  To stop him, some type of super wizard or whatnot summoned him up and put this "curse" on him so that he would have to be the servant of some family or special organization (or maybe a family who leads a special organization).  As a protective measure the curse limits how much of his power is avalible, along with what he can do, so he would have some kind of paladin code of conduct or the like.  He was also commanded to assume a pleasing human form, but maybe he still has some ability to assume his demonic form, or at least a half-demon form.  His main power is regeneration, but should have at least some spellcasting and other assortment of supernatural abilities.
Oh yeah, and if it wasn't obvious, his main purpose now is taking care of demons and other such problems for the "weak" humans.  And his main personal goal is to find a way to break out of the curse.

So is anyone else interested in playing this weekend?

I'll even take a "I would love to but I can't because I plan to be in the  hospital this Saturday recovering from the near fatal car wreck I will be in on Friday" excuse or something.

I-would-love-to-but-I-live-on-the-other-side-of-the-country.
If the offer still stands in august however...

Thank you for your sincere excuse. Not terribly valid, but at least it's sincere.

Yup, I'll probably try running this again in August if I'm not bogged down studying for the GRE.

If the planets align for me it sounds fun (really,) but honestly the planets don't look like they're going to align, at least not in May.  June forwards, though, is an entirely different story.

North or South?

No, I've got it! Same basic concept, except he's a lycanthrope. New name: Virginia Wolf.

Nah, who'd be afraid of that?

Your excuses are noted and appreciated.

Keep in mind I'm flexible on the time.

So I went ahead and ran the adventure I had been planning this past Saturday. It ran a little longer than I had anticipated. Still, it was good in that I learned a lot on how to make things run smoother next time. I also feel comfortable writing a review of the game. (Review coming sometime May 2006.)

So I'm thinking I would like to run another session of M&M maybe the end of May or June. Is anyone interested? What day and time would be best?

Does anyone have a preference for a setting? I'm thinking I would like to stay on Earth, but I'm open to historical or futuristic settings.

I'd be interested. I've always though Mutants and Masterminds looked really cool.

The weekend of 10 June doesn't work for me, I'll be out of town. Other than that, I'm good.

You know, because I have no life.

Come on, you were all thinking it. I just insulted me first.
Title: Re: Anyone up for Gaming?

So I'm available to run a Mutants and Masterminds game on either the 9 or 10th or the 16 or 17th.

The 16/17 one would probably be at Run for Life thing.

It might be less chaotic to run one on  9th or 10th (sorry harbinger).

So what would people like to do? And what sort of supers game would they like to play?
Title: Re: Anyone up for Gaming?

I don't think the 10th would work due to family obligations, but you never know, my mother could head back up to Idaho earlier then I'm thinking.
Title: Re: Anyone up for Gaming?

Maybe we will have to the second week.  Next week I don't know, maybe we could make some generic type characters that people could just tweek to taste.  Otherwise it might take a long time for everyone to make a new char from scratch.
Title: Re: Anyone up for Gaming?
Post by: 42 on June 05, 2006, 05:03:02 AM
Well, if people have an idea of what they want to play, we could start building a characters earlier in the week.

Post by: Eagle Prince on June 05, 2006, 05:12:53 AM
Yeah, that would help.  We should have more than one copy too, which will also help out.  I might revise my Cerberus guy a bit or make an Immortal sort of (either like Highlander or maybe just some punk who got Excalibur, as on top of the sword the sheath is supposed to also give you crazy regeneration.  I believe its Merlin who tells Arthur that the sheath is more valuable than the sword b/c of this).

he certainly fits into the Anyone catagory.

What level and can i use the d20 modern stuff?
Title: Re: Anyone up for Gaming?
Post by: Spriggan on June 06, 2006, 01:04:41 PM
M&M is D20 but it's not compatible with anything wizard's or anyone else makes, it uses a point system instead of levels and has some changes in how combat works.

M&M is OGL, not d20
Title: Re: Anyone up for Gaming?
Post by: 42 on June 06, 2006, 06:36:17 PM
Mutants and Masterminds is OGL, which means it shares a lot in common with D20, but isn't D20. No classes, no hit points, and the only die required is a 20-sided one.

It also incidentally runs a little faster than D20.
You should read (reread) the reviews for more information. Or visit the M&M site. (http://www.mutantsandmasterminds.com/)

M&M's are chocolate peanut balls covered in candy.

Very nice.

no those would be peanut butter M&M's, the ones with soild peanuts and chocolate are peanut M&M's and M&M's are filled with Mars Chocolate.

Well, it looks like there isn't much interest for this weekend, so it will probably be next weekend during the Relay for Life event, if people are still interested. I'll have it put together with some premade characters for those who are interested.
Title: Re: Anyone up for Gaming?
Post by: Fellfrosch on June 08, 2006, 12:47:41 PM
I'd really like to do it this weekend, but I just can't make it work. Relay for Life could be good, but people might be coming and going and making it difficult. Still, it's worth a shot.

So I'm going to try and run a session during the Run for Life get together. Not going to make any guaruntees that it will happen depending on what else is going on. I figure I can handle up to 6 players.

For those who don't know about it. Mutants and Masterminds lets you create just about any kind of superhero you can imagine (seriously, any kind). So think of ideas.

The current adventure set-up will be in modern day Armenia. The heroes have been (will be) sent there to help out with a delicate diplomatic situation. I suspect that this will follow the general super-hero plot of: something strange is happening, the heroes investigate, meet the big bad, and finally smack down big bad. And some other stuff might happen too.

For the event see this thread: Run for Life (http://www.timewastersguide.com/boards/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=other;action=display;num=1149269208;start=0)

To best explain the rules read the reviews of Mutants and Masterminds 1st and 2nd edition in the RPG department. (You know, the stuff outside of the forum)

pre-mades are acceptable. Fixed or otherwise.

Fixed up meaning I tossed out his magic, changed his emotion control into a gaze attack that is love (ie charm) for his human form and fear for his demon form.  And I got his morph power working how I wanted, incidentally now he can take any human form like Mystique from the Xmen movies.  But he does actually have slightly different abilities powers from demon form and human form.

I should probably know that "if" we do play M&M at the Run for your life event that it will be at like 2-3 am, but that would leave just 42's regular crew and me since most people are leaving around 1am-2am.
Title: Re: Anyone up for Gaming?
Post by: 42 on June 16, 2006, 10:40:26 AM
Doesn't Fell and Mustard have to be there all night?

I was thinking we could probably get started around midnight. M&M adventures don't last as long as D&D adventures. But it does all depend on interest and what else is going on.

At any rate, I will have an adventure ready for tonight or for another time if that is the case.

So are we planning on coming home for awhile before the living greyhawk game?  If we were still up there at like 5 or 6am or something, then it might be easier to stay up there until LG, but if it was only like 3am that would probably be 5 hours of sleep or something before leaving again...although if we stayed up there, we'd need to take more than one car so Spriggan could go home.
Title: Re: Anyone up for Gaming?
Post by: 42 on June 16, 2006, 12:52:25 PM
I'm planning only till about 3 a.m. right now.

Besides I don't really sleep for more that 4 hours most dayss.

So since this didn't happen at Run for your Life, will it be happening somewhere else sometime? I should probably just bow out now, since I almost never have time for anything, but it sounds so fun.

42 was mentioning doing it at the bachlor party after everyone got their fill of Fragging.

Besides that I don't know when he'd do it since he wants to have several of the TWG regulars in it, I guess once Alan is done with his star Wars RPG we could move to M&M but that won't be for another 6 months or so.  I guess we could run it sometime when we know Micha isn't going to be around to GM.
Title: Re: Anyone up for Gaming?

All three of those are excellent plans. I think we want to run that screwy M&M one shot at the bachelor party anyway, so huzzah. We need to start making those characters.

If you go to their web boards, namely the Roll Call section, there are many superheroes stated up to give you an idea of what a char looks like.  Namely threads that say 2e conversions, etc will have hundreds of heroes (including familar ones like Supes, Batman, etc).

Here's a link to the board
http://www.atomicthinktank.com/viewforum.php?f=14&sid=401f90f6e5146f129cd4e96ff9cae603

I would also suggest before getting into the stats, decide how he fights first of all, then any other powers he might have like invisibility or regeneration or whatever.
