I'm agreeing with EUOL.  Roald Dahl was a pretty twisted guy, and I think he would giggle at this movie.

I"m not saying that watching the trailer didn't give me nightmares, but I'm also not saying that's a bad thing.

The old movie was excellent.  I think it would have been a mistake to try and remake it as it was.  So, instead, we have Burton doing what he does best--strange visuals, off-center characters.  Wonka in the other was rounded, wise, and fatherly.  That's fine, but I'm interested in seeing a man-child of a Wonka--the kind of man who would build this strange paradise of chocolate and insanity.

Gene Wilder was rounded, wise, and fatherly at the very very end.  But he is plenty creepy/marginally insane throughout most of the show.  That's why I like it so much.

Time will tell, and it could be a fine movie, but I dont like what I see so far. Depp looks out of his depth (no pun intended) which is a shame because the man does have a lot of talent. It looks like Burton relies on sightgags and adolescent humor to sell the creepy parts, so what you have is an uncomfortable mix of stupidity and creepy. Who knows, maybe it actually will work, but from that clip Im inclined to say the movie will bomb.
I will preface that by saying that I loved the book, and was amused by the Gene Wilder movie (although large parts of it annoyed me). The original Charlie and the Chocolate factory still is one of the greatest use of midgets ever.

Having just watched What's Eating Gilbert Grape last night, I want to pipe in and say that, in my opinion, Depp is *never* out of his depth. That man can play anything. However, whether or not Burton gives him a believable Wonka to play remains to be seen. Just from the trailer I have my reservations, but I'll definitely give the film a shot.

EDIT: Ok, I just now watched the trailer again, and I think my forecast for the movie has improved. Maybe the version I watched before was just smaller, but this time I caught a few scenes where Depp had an evil glint to his eye that would make Wonka much more interesting.

Never saw Gilbert Grape, and people always seem to like it when it's brought up. I should watch it one of these days.

/me gives Spriggo a cookie

I want to see this movie. Looks amazing. Gemm should fly over and we could go and watch it! And then set fire to a chocolate factory, yah.

All I have to say is that my Gene Wilder, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the book), Jonny Depp and Tim Burton loving sister is dying in anticipation.  And that is making me die along with her, simply due to hype.  I have too slow of a connection to watch the trailor, but I think Burton is an excellent director and I trust his judgement on the character.

And of course it's going to be creepy - it's a Burton film.  The man is a wack-job.  I a totally cool, good way.

What adolescent humor are you referring to, Jeffe? I don't remember seeing any.

just the delivery of some lines, the gum one stands out. I dont know it just seem like Depp is acting like Jim Carey in say The Grinch or Mike Myers in Cat in the Hat. Its kind of the its been done before so lets do it stupidly and say it was all a joke style that has become popular as of late. Beyond that I dont know, the music and singing were just too distracting and annoying for me to like the preview.  Then again, its a preview, and an early one at that... the movie may be better than my first impression.

No I didn't Fuzzy.  I rewatched the trailor and they didn't look very oompa-loompy.  Oh well.

As for Jonney Depth's look, the first time I saw it I was reminided of the lead singer of the J-Pop group TM Revolution (I don't care much for the group though).

Ok, Entropy seriously. Get out, of my. Head. I was thinking of doing that someday. You know, burning down a chocolate factory and all. But now to amuse you all with my thoughts on this.

I got to thinking, from the original movie, which I believe was entitled Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, that this is actually some sort of sequel, or something. But, I'm entirely not checking up any of my facts solely based upon the proprietary presumption that I don't want to overload my dial-up connection.

So, prove me wrong, but it won't stop me.
