I just thought I'd make a topic for all those people who look at a word--maybe it's a new word, maybe it's a word they haven't used in a while--and step back, thinking, "Hey, that's a pretty cool word."
I'll start. The word is "artifice". It has a nice sound to it.
-
Ooh, I've got one! "Behooves"
-
lesee, off the top of my head: serendipitous, avant-garde, vehemence
-
I'll say truculent.
-
I shall give credit to miyabi for reminding me of this one, but onomatopoeia. (for those who are confused or, like me, need to google it, it's the words that represent sounds such as crash, boom, bang, buzz, meow, ect)
-
Translucence
-
This next one isn't merely a cool word, it is one of my all time favorites: quintessence. I don't get to use it that often, but simply the sound of it is pure awesome.
-
apt
obtuse
mnemonic
-
Je ne sais quoi, asymptote, brouhaha, sarcophagus, plateau.
-
Hubris, existential, magnanimous
-
Juxtaposition, lupine, feline, emerald, kayak.
-
Proprioception. Cool word and cool sense. We'd be quite handicapped without it.
-
Why'll we're on that topic, I'll just put up equilibrioception, too. Nice sound. ;D
-
I can't freaking find this to check my spelling but oblicatory is freaking awesome to say (a form of obligation.
ie "And of course you have the oblicatory questions about spices in there")
-
I think you mean "obligatory", because I've never heard of "oblicatory", but I can't ever be 100% sure.
-
The way I'm pronucing it to myself is uh-blick-uh-tori
-
Insomniac, bulimic, orangutan.
-
You know what's cool about this thread? You can legitimately post a one-word post. It's fair game.
Here's one: obfuscate. Very cool.
-
Persimmon, anarchy, frigid, avenge.
-
pomegranate, relegate, relinquish
Also: The word is indeed obligatory.
-
favorite word: Vigor
sounds so awesome though I pronounce it like "tiger" but with a "v". I think thats the correct way to pronounce it... not sure.
-
I think it's more like VIH-ger, with the 'ger' being like 'grrr'.…
-
I think it's more like VIH-ger, with the 'ger' being like 'grrr'.…
Yeah, that's pretty much the only way i've ever heard it pronounced.
-
Yeah, me, too. The way benvolio is saying he pronounces it almost sounds like the same word said with a heavy accent. :-/
-
I think what benvolio is talking about is a cross between a viper and a tiger...a kind of large, venomous feline, or veline if you will.
By the way: Viper.
-
Rhombus.
-
Magnanimity. Thanks Silk :P
-
Karen says mellifluous.
-
mellifluous.
I think that's how RJ always described the voice of disguise Lanfear used to use…Kaille or something…the overweight woman who always wore white (in the Waste).
Polynomial.
-
Trapezoid
Dictate
-
Since you brought up math, LAVGRS: Calculus :D
-
Lol Chaos.
Quadrilateral, function, conjunction, binomial, polygon, multiplicative. Ha ha.
-
lol conjuction junction, what's your function?
-
Lol that's exactly what I was thinking.
-
Indefatigable
Fatuous
Crepuscular
Jacobian (for you multivariable calculas-takers out there)
-
Curmudgeon.
Denigrate.
Susurrus.
Pronto.
;D
-
Jacobian (for you multivariable calculas-takers out there)
That was me last semester. On to differential equations in the fall.
Deluge.

Really? Differentials were the first thing we did in calculus.
Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliaphobia. (yes, it's a word.)

Well, differentiation (as in derivatives of functions) are of course first semester calculus. Differential equations is the class which teaches you various methods for solving differential equations.
Which brings me to: Differentiation. It's different than differential equations!
(Okay, that was horrible.)
-
Pragmatic.
-
This word just sounds cool: Zeus. Simple, yet... zippy?
-
Appendectomy. . . it just . . . sounds really cool.
-
Sabotage, espionage, quarry.
-
Quaff. Coif. Two words that sound the same, with radically different meanings.
-
Ridiculous, donjon, illegitimate.
-
hyperbole
-
Mesmerize
-
hyphen.
-
Peccadillo
-
Thank ryos for this one: egads.
-
pulchritudinous (one of my many favs)
-
Alack
-
Can't remember if this one's been done: abjuration.
-
Ethereal.
-
Evocation
-
Hypnotic, essence, amateur.
-
Antidisestablishmentarianism. 8)
-
Lol. I used to think I was cool in like third grade 'cause I could spell that word. (I know, it's sad :'()
-
You and I both.
Charlatan. Waffling. Exacerbate. Philander. Hooligan. Oh, and Narwhal (http://www.weebls-stuff.com/toons/Narwhals/).
-
KChan, it wasn't until recently that I realized narwhals were actually real. I thought they were a made-up creature. :P
Cappuccino!
-
If Chaos hadn't posted that, I would still think that they were made up. Now I just feel lame. All though it makes me happy that narwhals actually exist.
-
Narwhals. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narwhals)
I'm just as surprised as you are.

i didn't realize people doubted the existance of narwhals. :P

Or unicorns, for that matter.
antecedents
-
Narwhals: unicorns of the sea!
-
Yeah chaos, that's the first place I went when I saw you guys posting that narwhals did exist. Yay wiki!
And @ Eerongal, I don't know why it is that I didn't realize narwhals really existed. I do think it's rather cool that they do, though. It's something of a pleasant surprise. Much better than if, say, someone told me a certain old man delivered presents to all the children in the world on Christmas eve only to shatter my hopes 6 years later by telling my he didn't actually exist.

well, it's probably because i was told they were real animals for as long as i remember that i just accept their existance as a standard. I've honestly never questioned if they were real or not, so that's why i find it kinda surprising.
-
Yeah, I don't think I've ever heard narwhals mentioned except in fictional books and in conversations at school that could not in any way be considered serious. That's probably a large part of the problem right there.
-
That, and "unicorns of the sea" is a description calculated to make the hearer totally disregard their existence- as with unicorns. But they are cool, now that I've actually read about them!
Also: Blather, rinse, repeat. ;)
-
Obstinate, belligerent, epitome.
-
Literally? Hypothermia.
-
Adumbrate. Apparently, it means to outline, or to foreshadow. Neat...
-
For you grammar buffs, I just stumbled onto a totally sweet site (http://www.etymonline.com/). It makes even ordinary words sound awesome!
Acedia. (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/acedia)

Defenestration....
-
Penumbra, Rally
-
concentrate
-
Cerebral!

Emphatic, intrigue, incessant, naivety...

Delator.
