Well, this can't be good.

Disney is collaborating on making the classics into a movie.

Ya the production company bought the rights about a year ago, blame it on Harry Potter and LOTR doing very well money wise.
Screw it, I'm buying crayons and paper. I can imagineer my own adventures! Wheeee!

Black Cauldron, LIttle Mermaid, Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame. No... I have no faith that Disney will do a faithful rendition, whatever the success of Wingnut Films.

The article does say that they've got a hefty 100 mil budget.  Still, there have been a lot of big budget stinkers.

My real worry, though, is that they'll take out the Christian symbolism and trade it for Hogwarts and magic wands.

Well they left it in in the PBS versions.  I was always upset that they never did my two favorites Magician's Nephew and The Horse and His Boy.

Though I LOOOOOVE Tom Baker as Puddleglum.

So why did they change Harry Potter and the Socerer's Stone to Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone? WTF?

From what I remember, it was released in England as the Philosopher's Stone, and in america as the Sorcerer's Stone.  I don't know why though.

Don't be quite so hard on the 'Sorcerer's Stone' debacle.  It was dumb, yes, but Harry Potter wasn't the best-seller then that it is now.  That was the first book, and Scholastic was taking a chance by publishing it.  They changed the title for marketing reasons, thinking that 'sorcerer' in the title would make it more appealing to kids than 'philosopher' would.  It kind of makes sense--you're launching a new children's fantasy series.  Nothing in 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' gives an indication of genre.
