ok, i guess this is where I have to admit I'm just wrong. I'll have to play with the other computers here to confirm or deny that. Maybe it's added as a feature during an update you didn't install, or something.

"Hide inactive icons" was new in WinXP, as was "Use custom menus" which I hate so much.

no, the custome menu is where Windows decides FOR you what order it should be in. I suppose that's useful if you only use a couple of programs regularly, but in the real world, it gets people lost and makes it so you can't find things
