well considering my SONY came with that for free I'd say it was a rip-off.  But hey, I go for quality, not for hipness.
Screw it, I'm buying crayons and paper. I can imagineer my own adventures! Wheeee!

I fail to understand why you need to rip on EUOL and my purchase of Ipods
I dont think we've ever ripped on your player. Thats pretty rude Spriggan.

A lot of so called Warranties these days only cover up to a certain price point for repairs or replacements...<COUGH, DELL> or expire in six months.
But yeah other companies like Sony do have good warrenties.
The 50 bucks you tack on are to extend the Ipod warrenty to 3 years which is a good deal IMHO. That covers just about anything you can do to it too short of running it over with a Sony delivery truck.

So I guess the trade off is the same... and When you consider its a portable harddrive too then Its actually kind of nice....

That being said, I wouldnt hate a replaceable battery for my Ipod...
but there are a few solutions on the market, from add on battery packs to running your "Pod" on inline power.

yeah, a even Dell offers 1 year warranty free on their computers.
Heck, even MY company does that, and the average repair cost for our instruments is higher than the cost of a new computer.

Im just bitter at dell because they welched on their Warrenty for me over something minor, and I didnt have enough capital to sue em... ;D.

Ie because I had installed an application that didnt come with the computer I had altered its original state and therefore had voided the warranty.

that sounds wrong. I'd check the service agreement. Course, I guess it's a little late for that now.

Basically yes...

But thats also not the real point...
I like the Ipod, and think that its design and function make it much more than a trendy fad...
It has battery issues.... they have been addressed maybe not a satifactorily as some want , but oh well. 50 bucks to extend the warrenty to 3 years total 1 yr +2 more is a good deal.

Saying all that I dont think I've ever disparaged anyones choice of computing platform, media player or automobile (Unless they drive a pinto) On another thread I was genuinely happy Spiggan got the music player he wanted. Maybe he didnt mean to be rude, and Im sorry If i called him that, but I dont like him saying I bought an Ipod just to be trendy. I bought it because its well built, supports multiple formats, is exceptionally portable and light doesnt skip, and can be used as a hard drive. I think all of those things are good reasons....

Being poor and not really desiring a portable music source, I don't have any type of player.  However, the Ipod commercials are cool.
