Everything Else / html
« on: September 23, 2004, 07:06:44 PM »
So...can you format html to display things like a regular document?  Ie, can you make it automatically indent the first line of a paragraph?  And can you make it double-space?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Everything Else / Stephan Martiniere
« on: September 15, 2004, 03:48:54 PM »
So, Stephan just released an art book with a lot of his covers in it.  In case you don't know, this is the guy who did the ELANTRIS cover art.

Check it out:

(And yes, I went ahead and ordered a copy.  I really think this guy is good, and it was a good price for an art book.)

Writing Group / Ladies, EUOL Needs More Help

I need to draw upon the TWG's feminine side again.  I'm working on the sequel to MISTBORN, and I've been thinking that I want to provide Vin with a strong female role-model--something she's lacked all of her life.

The character will probably come in the form of a middle-aged female Keeper.  What kinds of things would you like to see this woman teach Vin?  What lessons could Vin learn from a mother-figure that would have an obvious impact on her?

Everything Else / Worldcon Therapy Group
« on: September 08, 2004, 01:09:35 AM »
Whew!  That was a marathon, wasn't it?

I'm not so sure about this six-day con thing.  World Fantasy seems to be more my speed--Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

Anyway, what con are we going to do next year?

Movies and TV / Hero *Spoilers*
« on: August 29, 2004, 01:16:55 AM »
So, I started this so we could discuss the theme of the movie.

Fell:  Yes, putting down the sword as a theme of the movie--but most of the main characters essentially decide that it's okay to conquer for a little while as long as you're doing it in the name of eventual peace.

That's not a new idea--it shows up all the time in fantasy.  (I've thought of using it myself a couple of times.)  However, it makes me uncomfortable--it just sounds too Machiavellian.

So, this movie was something of a disappointment to me.  I'm distinctly underwhelmed.

Writing Group / Sequel-Writing Blues
« on: August 26, 2004, 01:38:47 AM »
Well, not exactly blues--it feels good to get back to these characters and continue the story of their lives.  However, there are some annoying parts as well.

Like, for instance, that 'quick-explain' thing you have to do at the beginning of the story to re-introduce readers to the world and the magic system.  Honestly, I've never had to do that before, and it's an interesting situation.  I find myself a little frustrated that I have to break the action to remind everyone what the magic does and how it works.

Rants and Stuff / It's Over (For Now)
« on: August 25, 2004, 10:40:23 PM »
Well, so much for writing full-time.  Tomorrow and Friday, I have to do training at BYU all day, and after that it's back to school (two classes taking, one class teaching.)

It was an excellent summer filled with productive writing, and I completely enjoyed it.  (Which is good, since starting next summer, that's pretty much how my life will be.)

However, for eight more months, I've gotta be a working stiff like the rest of you.  (Sigh.)

Everything Else / Cool Stuff on the Internet IV
« on: August 25, 2004, 07:48:35 PM »
If you find it on the internet, and you think it's cool, link it here for all to enjoy.

To start us off...well, turtle paintings are nice, but if I had an extra hundred bucks sitting around, I'd probably buy one of these:

Everything Else / Acknowledgements Draft
« on: August 20, 2004, 01:04:09 AM »
I'm writing it right now.  So, if you've read and commented on ELANTRIS at some point, post your RL name here (even those of you who are obvious) so that I can get spelling and things right.

Everything Else / MISTBORN Map
« on: August 19, 2004, 05:37:53 PM »
Those of you reading the book, or who have already read it, may be interested in the preliminary map I've worked out for the series.

It's not all that important for the first book, since nearly everything happens inside of Luthadel, but you might like seeing this as a frame of reference.

Writing Group / Naming Another Book
« on: August 19, 2004, 03:44:28 PM »
So, I've begun preliminary work on the MISTBORN sequel, and I'm kicking around ideas for a title.  What do you guys think of the following:

Mistborn:
The Well of Ascension

Mistborn:
The Final Hero

I like them both, though I like the first a little better.  "The Well of Ascension" just sounds like a fantasy book title.  However, "The Final Hero" has a nice little cohesive ring with the first book, which was named "The Final Empire."

Everything Else / Google and Stuff

So, you don't have to submit to search engines anymore, right?  Also, do they still use meta-tags?

I'm just trying to figure out how to make my website actually show up on google/yahoo searches.  Don't they evaluate now based on how many web pages link to you?

Everything Else / Elantris 9.0
« on: August 18, 2004, 05:23:18 AM »
So, here's something fun for you all.  I finished the ninth revision of ELANTRIS last night, and out of curiosity, I wondered how much of the text had changed from the original version.

So, I dug out ELANTRIS 1.0 from four years ago, and used MS Word's 'Compare Documents' function.

Here's a grand shot--this is the entire novel shrunk down to 1pt font and put on a nine-page spread with all page breaks removed: (The stuff in red is new text, the stuff in white is old.)

http://www.brandonsanderson.com/graphics/elantrisedits.gif

And, here are two shots of a 4pt, two-page spread.  You can just barely make out single-letter changes on this one.

Finally, A zoom in close enough to see some words:

So, it looks like about half of the text is new or changed.  A lot of things have been renamed, and I think MS Word might have overestimated a bit.  However, I'm glad THAT'S all behind me.  (Whew.)

Hope I don't have do this many drafts for every book....

Are you going to be able to email me that map today?  I kinda go up to Tor tomorrow....

If it's not coming, don't worry.  I can take it up at Worldcon.  However, I'm a bit worried that you sent it and I've missed it because of my email situation.
