Going back to school
« on: February 03, 2004, 07:13:43 PM »
So after I get my debt under control I think Im going to take advantage of the GI Bill and  go back to college... Im Probably halfway through my junior year when you add all the credits I have from being in the military.

This time I think im going to focus on english and writing (since writing has always been a dream of mine) because its marketable outside of the government sector.

Good for you!  Education is important however little I like it...You got a lot of credits in the military...

I think at the end of my high school Ed. I will have about two years (or so) worth of college credits, and God knows what I'm gonna do then.  None of them will have any practicality, though, like american history and calculus and crap like that.  Are yours actually practical in a life?

yeah, well, it depends on what you go through. History and calculus are both very valuable depending on what field you go into.

I know, I know, and so is world lit and blah blah blah all these freakin advanced classes I will or am take/ing for no reason other than to get the credit for it, and by the time I am in college I wont remember anyway...  But they can be worthful, I suppose, if I become a historic mathmatician of literary values...

also they're useful as GE credits so you can waste less time taking  classes at college you're not interested in.

That is the basic reason I take them.  This year I am taking one, but next year more than half my classes will be for college credit if I count correctly.  Lets see, AP lit, AP world history, Pre calc and some other math class.  Only my electives and science classes wont be advanced.

It gets to be a real pain in the butt.  But once I get to college I gues I should have a better idea of what I want to do.

Beautiful.  Ten bonus posts to you for making me laugh.

Anyway, don't be in too much of a rush to decide what you want to do.  My mother--bless her heart--had convinced me that I wanted to be a scientist when I went to college.  Her reasoning seemed sound:  I couldn't be a writer because you can't make any money at writing.

Well, it took me about three years to realize that yes indeed, I wanted to be a writer, regardless of the lack of money.  Now I've sold a couple of books, and I'm very happy I made the decision.  The truth is, however, that I really didn't have the drive to become a writer when I was in high school.  It was better for me to just go to college and take some classes to see what I liked.  By that time, I had the experience and maturity necessary to decide what I wanted to be, then to pursue it.

I think I have about 15 credits in basic science, 2 or 3 credit hours in weather, plus a whole slew of other general credits for being a petty officer.
As for history... Im a former history major and I use it all the time in my life. From what i've seen though the specific degree doesn't matter too much if you know the right people. My wife for instance has a degree in art history and does great as a contracts officer for a beltway bandit company.

I'm just getting around to my history credits (my last two semesters, hah).  It's interesting, but probably more aplicable in a general sense than in a "I need to know about the Battle of Gettysburg to get this job!" kind of sense.

Excellent teacher though- he teaches history in a way I can remember.  I don't do non-fiction;  I can remember characters, people, relationships, plot developments, so I do well with fiction.  (My husband on the other hand is great with non-fiction, but can't remember the name of Harry Potter's godfather.  *shrug*)

I can imagine.  Being a defender of mud can't be that intellectually taxing.
