Title: Nerdy Me
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on May 13, 2003, 07:29:44 PM
Ok, here's how nerdy I am.

I took Monsters and Animals and Urban Arcana back to the store today which gave me around $60 to play with. Nearly $40 of which I'd already decided to spend on Settlers. So, I looked around. Saw Fluxx. Saw Nano Fictionary. Both tempted me. Saw someone buying Godlike. Decided to see if I wanted that, but didn't see it on the shelf. Instead saw Pendragon. Being a big Arthurian fan, I was sorely tempted. Eventually, however, I decided I didn't know enough about the system. ElJeffe will tell me if that was a mistake and that I really want it.

In the end I spent my remaining $23 of credit. (plus $2.18 in cash) on a solitary set of dice (d4, d6, d8, d10, d10 with a trailing zero. d12. d20). They're made out of yellow jade, and they're small (which I like) and they look really cool and come with their own little leather bag and I'm happy.

It was a mistake... :D

Pendragon rocks , as a game and as one of the best Arthurian references ever.

I had a lot of fun with it when I had it. I sold it because besides you there just arn't that many folks who like the Arthur legend enough to learn a new system.

It uses the old chaosim system (Call of Cthulu) which isn't spectacular but it is solid.
It also has some neat ideas about knights.
Your knight can come from about 6 cultures Cymri, Occitan, Frank, Saxon, Pict and Roman. They can be Christian Pagan or if you delve real deep in the rules Jewish and I think Muslim. Each culture and religion gives the knights virtues to shoot for, like Valor or Chastity and Vices too.  Knights in balance get bonuses. The goal is to become famous and be a good Knight. Its also neat because its a multi generational game and you can start during the reign of Uthar and go all the way to the Death of Arthur.  Plus they want you to draw your own heraldic device.

I thought it was well done and fun. But like I said you were about the only person I expected would want to learn.  And when you moved out to Utah I sold it.

Well, Game Parlour's got it, and an expansion (mostly a list of nights) AND it has a quasi-encyclopedia. I'm deciding how much I need that since I have sort of hte definitive scholarly reference of that ilk on my shelf. If they still have it in three weeks when I've saved up, I'll grab it. OR! you could get it for me and I can just pay you back :D

Get me that digital camera that I've been wanting. I'll post pics. Yeah, it was a big deal, but they're nifty. We're thinking of getting one this coming Christmas or something, so you only have to wait 7 months or so. I'll do pics of my desk while I'm at it.

You know tage has enough nerdiness about him that I wouldn't give his opinion any weight as insult. It's more like an acknowledgement of acceptance into his world of nerdiness. Or something...

On a dissimilar and completely unrelated note, my sister-in-law will be in Provo next weekend, and I could make her come by and get my pillow and Tome and Blood. Also, she's smart and kinda cute. Should I have her stop by to pick that up? If yes, email me your address/phone so I can pass them on to her.
Title: Re: Nerdy Me

Hmm... I assume you mention her being smart and kinda cute because she's single. If that's the case, I definitely think you should post her picture and a small summary of her interests.

That raises a question.

Is going out with a friends half sister as bad as going out with his sister?

And is it as likely to get you beaten up by said friend?

Because here at TWG, we aim to pierce the cutting edge of modern thinking and analysis.
Title: Re: Nerdy Me
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on May 14, 2003, 07:18:34 PM
Yeah, she's single. I'll dig around for a picture. She works for the CIA I think. She speaks Arabic, but I don't know much else for detail (probably she'd have to kill me if she told me).

Other than liking books and history and international relations, I don't think she's much of a geek. She does play card type games with the family, and she does like LOTR and Star Wars (I even got her to play a game of LOTR Risk once) but she doesn't game much. She doesn't watch anime or read manga. And I dont' think I've ever even seen her use a computer. The youngest sister-in-law does all the above, almost, but she's a little young at 16. Anyway, that's my sister-in-law. Feel free to ask her out if you're interested

Cool. She's picking this stuff up from Spriggan and 42? I found that Fairy Meat supplement you wanted, so I'll leave that with them so ishe can get it when she's there. Anything else you want?

She is if Spriggan and/or 42 acknowledge they'd be able to accomodate that. I'd like Fairy Meat. That'd be very cool.

What else you got? I think I'm caught up on the D&D stuff.

Yes, Fairy Meat is so, so good.  You need to make a trip to St. Louis, Saint, so that there will actually be someone else here who plays it.

On the subject of groovy dice...

Dwarven Stones (http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/DWARVEN_STONES.html)

My favourite? The gold D20 pendant.

Oh, BTW, the current £ to US$ exchange rate is $1.67 to £1.

So the top one is really expensive.

Post by: Spriggan on May 18, 2003, 09:54:38 PM
I've seen those in stores out here before entropy.  I kinda wanted to get the Jade ones but didn't want to pay $40 for dice.

Those are really cool, however I wonder if anyone would actually dare use them. And even if they did, wouldn't they be sort of clunky and or fragile?

actually, that's exactly what I have (the yellow jade ones) -- though mine are a touch darker. They hold up really well. The biggest worry you have is losing them (now where did I put mine...)

Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on June 13, 2003, 12:55:38 AM
Ok, my last attempt at gathering this stuff having failed, I am now making a trip to Utah personally. I will be collecting books and pillows. This happens in two weeks (plane arrives on the 27th, plane leaves on 29th -- hopefully the insertion will go quickly adn the commie bastards will never know I was there....er... you know I have to kill you all now, right?)

ANyway, friend's getting married, and i was finally convinced to buy a plane ticket (got almost entirely middle seats, and I have to change planes TWICE, with a 4 hour layover in St. Paul... this trip will SUCK).

Incidentally, I'll be needing a couch and a couple rides if anyone is feeling charitible enough to volunteer to help a guy out that weekend. I have a shiny present for anyone who can. (it's tin foil, but you didn't hear that from me). My grandparents live in Bountiful, but as the wedding is in Provo, that's not terribly convenient, so I'm hoping for a pad/chauffeur in Happy Valley.

I promise not to devour any of your young (if applicable). However, I WOULD like to stop by the spriggan/42 place to pick up stuff. I'm happy to carry anything east that won't get me arrested or divorced for anybody out there as well.

Post by: EUOL on June 13, 2003, 04:37:17 AM
I'm sure someone can help you out.  Tage and my house is pretty big, if that's what you mean by needing a 'pad.'  I'll be in town that weekend, and can probably give you some rides.
Title: Re: Nerdy Me
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on June 13, 2003, 09:42:11 AM
Yeah, I just mean a place to sleep. I'll probably go out to eat a couple times, but on the whole, I won't be doing much social. The rides I know I'll need are a) a ride from the airport friday afternoon, and back to it on Sunday (early) morning. (I've got some pretty obnoxious flights) b) a ride to the Provo Temple and back, saturday afternoon, and c) a ride to the reception and back Saturday evening.

I'm going to see if I can split these favors up so no one feels like I'm just using them for a weekend. But I'm also going to bring my M:tG cards so we can play that if anyone's interested. And I'll bring GHS. Last time anyone played with me we had no feral monsters, and now I have nearly a dozen, so it's a different experience. I'd like to try and get some of you hooked.

Or, we could do what I did last time I flew out of Utah, and play a mega-long role playing session (it earned me geek points!) though it wouldn't be nearly as long, since I'll be at a reception at night and leave in the morning. On second thought, anything more than a couple hours won't be worth it, unless it happened friday night.

Perhaps I'll drop by TLE and read a story for old times sake.

Anyway, anyone up for helping me out on specific rides, let me know. I'm sure if you drove me to the reception you could come in and eat a snack or something, but that might not make it worth getting dressed for it.
Title: Re: Nerdy Me
Post by: Tage on June 13, 2003, 12:46:36 PM
I'm sure between me and Brandon we can get you a couch and some rides over the weekend. And Brandon will probably even want to play M:tG with you. What are your flight details coming in on Friday? Actually, wait until we're closer to the day, otherwise we'll just forget about it.

Sad! I'll in CA that weekend, and actually out of town for three weeks, so I'll miss the chance to see you at TLE. But while you're at the reception on the 28th, think of me at my own.

:D

I'd be up for some kind of gaming extravaganza. Maybe we should do a Magic draft...though it would probably be a "buy your own cards" draft. But I might well be able to finance something. If you guys like the idea, I'll see what I can cook up.

Well, mine and Jordo's place is also available. We have an extra room that no one is renting right now. You could probably use it as long as it's not trashed when you leave.

Also if its magic the Cotten tree is an option.  I'd be working that weekend.
Title: Re: Nerdy Me
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on June 13, 2003, 11:37:37 PM
Sweet. Thanks guys. I'll post more details as we get closer. Magic at the Cottontree Fri. night sounds like a blast. I'm not supposed to spend a lot of money, so i'd rather not buy new cards (especially since I only play with ONE friend out here, and he's the one getting married, so it doesn't happen very often).

Oh, and if I can't trash the rooms I sleep in, I'll just have to leave my chain saw at home. Guess they wouldn't let me take that on the plane anyway.
Title: Re: Nerdy Me
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on June 25, 2003, 12:49:08 AM
Ok, here's the deal with my trip

My plane arrives in SLC at 1620 on Friday. However, I'm having my grandparents pick me up. I'll have dinner and conversation with them.

Now, if someone is really eager to have me play magic or do something that night, someone can volunteer to come pick me up in Bountiful at 8 or 9. If not, i'm happy to stay with my gparents, and I'll get them to take me down either in time for TLE (which I may drop in on) or at least the temple.

However, I still need rides from the temple, to the reception, and back to the airport very early sunday morning.

The sealing will probably be over at 2:30, but then there's pictures, so I don't expect to need a ride at 3:30 at the earliest. I'll bring the phone number of whoever wants to hang for a few hours, so no one has to hang around while I get pictured a bunch.

The reception is at 7:30. I probably need to be there a few minutes early. I'm sure whatever refreshments will be open to my ride, but it's another case where someone can just bail and not worry about me. From this I'll probably need a ride 9:30 or 10.

Then I'll be exhausted. So I won't want to play that night, but I will want a couch or something to sleep on. Preferably in the home of whoever is graciously volunteering to drive me to the airport. My plan leaves at 6 AM, which is an ungodly hour if ever there was one, so I need to be there by 4:30 I think. They say 2 hours, but I don't even know if the counters would be open before 5. This does, of course, mean leaving Provo at the even more sickening hour of 3:30ish. ick. I know. I will be forever in debt to whoever gives me this ride. This time may change based on my experience on how long it takes to get checked in on my trip out. Been a while since I've travelled.

So, any volunteers for any of these rides? I'd kinda like to have them straightened out ahead of time, so I don't have to worry about it in the (very little) time I have between events this weekend.

Also, and thanks a TON in advance. These are really big favors. I'll be buying at least one driver a meal. The early morning one may even get breakfast if he's up to it. And yes, I know that that won't be enough to cover it. I'll bring some cash for gas money, and still be indebted. You guys are the best.
Title: Re: Nerdy Me
Post by: Tage on June 25, 2003, 01:06:17 PM
Assuming no one else jumps at the chance to go get you on Friday, if you want to go to TLE on Saturday, then I'll go (it's nice to drop by every now and then) and pick you up there. From there we can get food as necessary, drop off whatever stuff you have at our place (we have more than enough room for you to sleep that night), and then head to the temple.

I'm not sure what plans everyone else has for you from 3:30-7:30. If there are any games scheduled, whoever is involved will probably be willing to pick you up and drop you off. If no games happen, I can drive.

Sunday morning you'll be driven by Brandon, who is always awake at that hour anyway.

ok, nerdy me time again. I spent birthday money yesterday.

And uh.. remember the yellow jade dice I bought?

I bought another set, Obsidian this time, but also for $25. They're just as nice. In fact, the numbers are a little cleaner, though I still like the yellow on the others better.

I also just bought some regular Chessex gaming dice but with  a really nice "jade" coloring with gold numbers. Pretty.

Finally, Jeffe will like this, I bought a "Set of 8 dice for Fulminata." Just 8 regular 8-sided dice, but with Roman numbering. Pretty spiffin.

Oh, and I got the latest Usagi Yojimbo and TMNT. I think those dorks at the shop are skipping issues on me, I don't remembering getting issue 5 of TMNT.

Frankly your story of pretty dice fasinates me. I get mocked for once spending 85 cents on a d20 dice to be used as a marker for my characters in combat. You are a guy and you buy a new set of dice annually. Why dice? I would have expected you to buy action figures.

I've never mocked you for buying dice.

And for the record, it's only been 7 months since I bought new dice. Actually, not even that, if you count the 30 or so VERY tiny dice I got to use as markers for CheapA games. I Have a pretty large collection.

sort of I did buy a cool Samurai Stickfas and am purchasing the bear at the bottom in brown
like this
(http://www.kidrobot.com/images/specimages/s-blgins-1.jpg)

Gloomy, an abandoned little bear, is rescued by Pity (the little boy). At first, he is cute and cuddly, but becomes more wild as he grows up. Since bears do not become attached to people like dogs by nature, Gloomy attacks Pity even though he is the owner. So Gloomy has blood on him from biting and/or scratching Pity. The Gloomy with blood is called Chax Colony Edition.

Mori Chack often thinks about the incompatibility between humans and animals and some illustrations showing a bear and a person hand in hand totally disgust him. This cannot be true! Although cruel, he believes that the relationship between Gloomy and Pity is natural.
