Title: I Hate Hot Food!!!
Post by: Palfil on April 27, 2006, 08:22:20 PM
I HATE hot (like in over-spiced) food. And I'm saying this with the same amount of passion as Mr. Smith in the Matrix I where he says that he "hates this place" (the creation of the world within the matrix).

It seems like if people can't make food taste good they have to cloak it in overly hot spices to make it taste like something. To me it displays a lack of talent and consideration.

I Hate curries.

I Hate chili.

If it is mildly spicy and stings my taste buds only slightly - don't ask - I Hate it.

lol, yeah FMJ it does seem alot like something a bot would put, but there is no hyperlink.

Anyway, Palfil, it seems to me that you know nothing about what goes into cooking. After all, you can't just dump in spices and serve, it overpowers everything else. You have to find the right blend, sometimes between several different types of spices. And what makes you think that people use it because they are bad at cooking? If someone had burned or chared the food because of incompetence you'd still be able to tell, no matter what spices they put in. Just becuase something doesn't catter to your tastes doesn't mean it wasn't done with skill. Take Apple Computers for example; I can't stand them, but that doesn't mean that I don't respect the skill that went into making them. Anyway, just something to think about.

I love hot food, I like tobasco and jalapenos on almost everything.  I have even ate a lot of raw habaneros.  For that matter, I have grown a lot of jalapenos and habaneros.

I love hot food myself! I have had raw and pickled and dried habaneros whole.. I must say.. the pickled and dried are the worst.

I had a friend.. we used to see who could find the hottest howt sauce from specialty and import stores and see who could take the most without throwing up or crying.

Brings a tear to my eye, and a cringe to my stomach thinking of it.

I also crave hot, spicy food. I particularly like Thia chiles and the Korean hot pepper. A lot of people who can't stand hot spicy food just haven't had enough of it to get use to the heat so they can enjoy the flavor.

oddly enough, I just went on a 45 minute search for a good hot and sour soup
I had some bad experiences with Panda Maxx across the street, so I ended up walking 8 blocks up the street, finally found a place, but it was a really expensive place, and I realized I didn't want to bring hot and sour soup 8 blocks before I could eat it. So I came back and went to Panda Maxx. Turns out their hot and sour is decent. Let's hope it clears me out like I was hoping it would.

I happen to love spicy food in all it's forms, and have a very low personal opinion of people who don't. I'm serious--I actually look down on people who don't like hot food, and then I have to pull back and tell myself that they're still good people. But I don't really believe it.

That's very funny.

I dont' like curry, because the flavor is icky. But I like myself some spicey food. If I go out for Chinese and at least one spicey dish isn't ordered, I get very disappointed.

I usually get 2-3 spicy to go with 3-4 regular.

I think it is good that we have so much in common here.

All the other less good people can not eat it if they want.

It just means they're bad people, that's all.

Fell, I know what you mean. It seems to me that people who don't like spicy food are just unwilling to try new and spicy foods. It gets to me at times, but I tell myself that it is only a minor character flaw and that it doesn't mean anything.

E, there are actually thousands of different types of curry, so I suggest that you just try a different curry (maybe a masala). I love to try new curries.

If they are caused by eating spicy food, I'd say they are caused by righteous living.

Im am usually amused by the toned down spicy most restaurants offer to people. Im equally amused that some people order said dishes and think they are getting hot food. They sweat, and complain and Im convinced react psychosomatically with what is essentially an ethnic dish with a dash of pepper. Thai places are often the worst offenders, followed by indian places leaving out lots of spices to favor the generic public even though the dishes they are serving are supposed to be spicy. I have cultivated a special relationship with my waiters now at most places, especially at ethnic places... I give em the look and say just make it for me how you would eat it, or tell them to make it very hot. That does the trick. You havent had thai unless its induced tears, and a good vindaloo should be painfully spicy.  8)

And while some places do use spicy to cover up real talent others make their food totally transcendent thanks to spice.

Jeffe, you are so right about most restaurants watering down their spicy dishes. If it doesn't bring tears to your eyes and your nose isn't running then you're not eating.

I'm also glad you mentioned vindaloo. It is a great curry. Penzey's spices sells a good vindaloo.

Um, HI.  For quite some time I was allergic to spicy food (most of the chemicals that cause food to taste "spicy") and still am to several.  I have had far to many people assume that that means that I simply "don't like" spicy food.  To boot, I find that many people over spice their food to disguise bad flavor.  So I actaually do dislike a lot of spicy food- and for good reason.
Sorry, that was a bit of a rant

Wow, this just reminded me of when I was about five; I would tell people that I was allergic to ketchup because I didn't like it in the slightest. I seem to remember it drove my older brother nuts.

blcdrayco, if you're truly allergic to spicy food then I will do my best to forgive you. That's like becoming an atheist because you're allergic to God--it's sad, but what else are you going to do?

Oh, don't start going soft Fell, just because someone has no control over their situation or environment doesn't mean that other people shouldn't make them feel sorry for being that way.

;D

hehe, jk. I am sure people who don't like hot food are nice too.

My wife is one of them.

I'm not particularly partial to spicy food. I don't dislike it, I just don't crave it either. Spicy food it something I like every once and while, maybe on Easter and Christmas.

Now what I don't get are people who can't handle sweet food. If eating one Krispy Creme doughnut gives you a head ache, or eating half a Napolean makes you dizzy, then you seriously need to repent. There is no sugar rush that is too big of a rush.

Okay 42, I know the suger thing is a attack on me. The fact that a Krispy Kreme glazed doughnut gives me a headache may not be totally related to suger and all Krispy Kremes are cooked in a river of fat.

It not that I don't like to have something sweet once in a while but I need spicy food. Sweet and spicy is a very good combination (this is why I like the korean hot pepper).

blcdrayco, your problem with saying that you allergic to spicy food is that spicy food is such a broad category. That is why people assume that you simple don't like spicy food. Are you allergic to something a simple a black pepper or is only certain types of spicy foods like the Mexican jalepino? If you say that you are allergic to a particular spice and that is gives a rash or something else that is commonly caused by eating spice food, then I think people would be more understanding. But to simply say you are allergic to spicy food is confusing.

I don't like sweet things either. I rarely eat candy or chocolate, and I always scrape the frosting off my cake. I like most baked sweets, but even cookies are usually too much. They don't give me a headache or anything, they're just too sweet.

I love sweet food, and spicy food (though not like the Mad Dr. and associates).  I prefer a nice mild spice to much (though certainly not all - keep the peppers out of French dishes with cheese or cream!) of my cooking and eating.  By "mild spice" I mean several jalapeños or serranos (depending on the dish and size, etc).  I tend to put a few good dashes of tabasco in otherwise "normal" soups, and I splash it on over Mexican food.

However, I have made dishes that were outrageously spicy, even by the standards of those who like spicy food; We once made a single Thai dish with 10 serrano chilis which were blended (seeds and all) into the dish (along with the other flavorings).  That one'd bring tears to your eyes, for sure.

I would just like to also make the comment that Thai curries are VERY different from Indian curries, and it's particularly important to differentiate the two; Thai curries do not actually contain curry (but rather contain curry paste).  I haven't particularly liked the Indian curries I've had, at least not when compared to the bliss that is Thai curry (if you couldn't tell, Thai is my favorite kind of food).

That's a good point to bring up, pretty much every country has it's own curry. I have had some from every place I could find it.

My younger brother makes a great Japanese curry (that's where he went for his two years).

I will say tat Thai is also one of my favorite foods.

Not only does every country have its own curries but there are many different curries in each country. India has thousands of different types of curry so to say that you don't like Indian curry may be too broad of a statement. Originally, Indian curry is not spicy hot.

You keep trying to convince me, but there's a reason they're all called "curry." They have similarities. If every curry I've ever tried I've disliked, it lends very little credence to the idea that there's a strong chance I'll find one I *do* like.

So no, I don't think that's too broad a statement at all. I find it to be a very rational and logical conclusion based on the available evidence.

Do you like good chili, E? Some chilis aren't very different from some curries (if at all). I'll accept that you don't like what most Americans consider curry here in the US, but don't get stuck on the idea that what American's call curry is what the rest of the world considers curry. Curry is a concept that few Americans seem to understand.

Cur·ry
tr.v. cur·ried, cur·ry·ing, cur·ries
1.To groom (a horse) with a currycomb.
2.To prepare (tanned hides) for use, as by soaking or coloring.

Idiom:
curry favor
To seek or gain favor by fawning or flattery.

I understand the concept very well, thank you.

I have had Mike's Mega Sudden Death Hot Sauce. I got it as a gift one Christmas and having been missing it since the bottle ran dry.

However, I got a really good hot sauce last Christmas, called "Lawyer's breath" that was very tasty. Yes, it was given to me as a joke, but it was really good to cook with. I have know idea where it came from, but I need more. Does anyone know where I can find this hot sauce?
