Quark disinheriting the Quantum Duck?!?!
« on: August 03, 2005, 01:06:40 PM »
From the Quark home page:

Quote
What is Quark's Mascot?

Hmm... Good question. Let me go ask the president.

...

Well, that's interesting. We don't have a mascot. Know what that means? That's right, it's CONTEST time!

The task: Create a character that will represent our club from here on forever until the end of time...

Quark already HAS a mascot that will represent it until the end of time. If they don't want the quantum duck, for whose vocalizations the club is named, they should change the name of their club!!
All Saiyuki fans should check out Dazzle! Emotionally wrenching action-adventure and quirky humor! (At least read chapter 6 and tell me if you're not hooked.) Volume 10 out now!

Do they realize that they have this mascot?

Maybe the group has so far removed from its original purpose into heresay and rumor that they have lost sight of their original purpose and symbolic figure--the quantum duck!!! Perhaps you should post on their forums and remind them.

(I should note that I am entirely unfamiliar with Quark. I only saw the website for the first time a couple of days ago when there was a link to their Harry Potter forums in books. So I am not an authority by any means, and am mostly being facetious.)

I have to say that, despite being VP under Prometheus for a semester, I was never terribly attached to Quark.

From what I've heard, Quark has gotten big recently.

Yes, I think they should keep the duck.

As I recall, the Duck was TLE's mascot, not Quark's. That's how we thought of him, anyway. I was never in Quark, so I couldn't say for sure.

It used to be all the same thing. The same people started Quark and TLE and LTUE. TLE has at times been called a publication of Quark. But "Quark" is the sound the Quantum Duck makes, so the relationship is clear.

Yup, Ookla has the right of it.  The QD says "Quark."

TLE still uses the duck...though I think they're redesigning it for this issue.

The original design of the quantum duck was done by a rather well-established and award-winning Illustrator. I keep thinking that it's Bob Eggleston, but I'm not sure.

I do know that it was drawn on a napkin as a way to make-up for snubbing one of the editors at a convention. Er...something like that. It's been a while since I heard the story.

At any rate there is quite a bit of history, myth, and mystique surrounding the Quantum Duck.

The QD that has been used in many many TLE issues (the one that had its cigar removed) isn't the only one that's been used throughout its history. I saw an early drawing of the QD hanging out with women in a lounge...or something like that...in one of the very early issues, I believe.

Anyway I don't see any need for there to be one definitive version or a "redesign" (i.e. a new version that replaces an old version); anyone can draw a picture of the Quantum Duck (as long as it's recognizeable).

Sad how the new Quarkers don't even know their heritage.

I assume you've e-mailed the person in charge Ookla?

If they're tossing out the QD, I demand that we adopt him. And then tear our clothes and never speak of Quark again, because it is dead to us.

After all, they already changed the name.

Remember, the club USED to be called Kwark.
