I don't think Ari particularly cares if her last name gets passed on.  There are only about 400 surnames in China (a country of over 1 billion), and only about 100 "common" surnames.  Ari's surname is one of these.

Ah, yes. Asians are pathetically anal about their last names being passed on. My grandmother (who is, by the way, FEMALE!!!! and therefore NOT a Duan) constantly irked my parents and uncles about having more kids at the risk of losing their homes and jobs and savings because none of them had sons to preserve the Duan family roots. She finally got her one grandson, and has since ignored us girls. Never mind that neighbors, nannies, and beggars randomly picked off the street also share our precious family name. This is the mentality that murders infant girls, causing their would-be soulmates to turn gay.

By that I mean, you can have my last name for all I care.

...And by that I mean, you can delete my last name and insert your own. And I'll be the first non-ancient woman in my family to change her last name.

A guy wanted to name his daughter Spatula and was declined by the government.

I'm not sure I disagree with that, even on principle of not wanting the govt to have that kind of control...

I have absolutely no qualms disagreeing with that.  Name her spatula and suffer the consequences.

The idea that the government should be allowed to dictate what you may or may not name your children.

I agree that anyone stupid enough to want to name their child spatula should be stopped.

Because we're stupid enough to believe in freedom.

So you don't really believe in the freedom to be stupid?

Well, I know that in Korea, women don't take on their husbands last name but then again, there aren't too many surnames to be had in Korea.

Neither do the Chinese. You'd think that of all places where women should logically take on their husbands' last names, Asia should be it.
