The hand movements are only necessary if that is the way you originally learn the weave.
Max is a Shadowblade, a supernatural--and supernaturally competent--warrior bound to protect her witch Giselle. As a Shadowblade, Max doesn't age. At the very least, Brandon created a character to play as himself if the movies are ever made
Obviously, this question will have to be explored further via fanfiction.
He also said splitting would mean that the first half could be published earlier while the second half was still a work in progress.
