Yeah, so one of my jobs is watermaster of an irrigation canal which doubles for collecting a lot of the storm drain water for Orem and part of Provo.  Okay, first I've only got paid on time maybe two or three times in the last two years.  Second tons of people illegally dump garbage in the canal which has caused me tons of trouble this last year.  Third, the water table has been so low over the last six years or so that I have problems meeting water demands and I get about 10-20 calls a day of people complaining... like I can make it rain or something, blah.  Of course, my dedication has got us over three times the water we would have had, but it just goes unnoticed.  In fact, I've got complaints before from people who were actually trying to steal water, some are even open about it... I guess they don't find any wrong in stealing.

I got a few serious issues with another job as well, but I'd rather just forget.  :(

Saturday is my day off, and I'll be getting up super-early to go to the Magic pre-release tournament, and then after that, apparently we're going to be having a session with our roleplaying group that evening.

So I don't expect to be very awake or relaxed after my day off.  Work, on the other hand, could not be going much better.  I LOVE working swing and sleeping in, and apart from that swing shifts get paid $0.50/hr more. It gets so quiet there at night, and I have cool friends to chat with.

This week has been going so slooowly. Because, of course, it's my last week at work. I look for Friday and liberation! But in the meantime, I have a paper due tomorrow--the beginning of weekly 5-pagers again--so I'm keeping busy when I'm not at work, but can't do homework at work, so I'm finishing up the projects I have and just being bored. And I know that made no sense and I'm not going to edit it. :P

My day has been good so far. I didn't get up until 10:00. Let out my ferret to play and be mischievious. Just got back from volunteering at the Mental Health Center, where I got help serve lunch and help with their art hour. I made one of the patients really happy by drawing a contour line portrait of him while he was sleeping. Now I have to go to work where I'll be dealing with people's petty problems. Well, all good things must end.

I have a 2500 word Shakespeare assignment due tomorrow. I've written 497 words.

Oh, and I get kicked out of my house this December, so the current plan to move out BETTER work out, or else I'm on the streets.

I've got a 4 day residential school over at Armidale, starting sunday.  This is the result of doing uni by correspondence; you've gotta go over there for a few days, and have the whole course crammed into a few days.  Oh, and drink lots of coffee.  Or sleep.

Title: Re: hows it going?
Post by: Peter Ahlstrom on September 17, 2004, 08:10:53 PM
Did I meet him? Well, frankly I can't remember if I was personally introduced. I was sitting there at one computer, and they walked by. Our guy said "And here's some of our copyeditors" and indicated us (I don't think he said my name but it's possible). And he pointed at my co-worker/roommate Alexis and said "here's the guy who reads the new books in Japanese to explain what they're about" and Stan said something like "but you explain in English, right?" ha ha... So thus my roommate got a whole sentence spoken to him by Stan Lee, and I got a passing glance.

I didn't want to make a big deal though. A lot of people lined up and got autographs, and his visit just was not meant to be anything like that. It was a business visit (though the subject of it is quite the mystery), not a geek fan visit. But a lot of people here totally geeked out--well, I guess that was predictable.

Signing the shield was a definite must though; I mean, seriously, who could pass that up? This is a 2 to 3 foot metal shield which cost over 200 dollars. But just random pieces of paper that will likely be lost--too much of a waste of his valuable time.

My car was smashed by a cement pumping truck and died. The insurance company is only paying the cost of buying another used car (according to their own appraisal) outright, which doesn't include the cost of actually replacing the car. It's like I've been forced to sell my only car at a loss, with no opportunity for replacing it, and someone came along and beat me on my back and neck with a stick to boot.

So sorry, Kristy and Janci, I can't kidnap you buys for after-TLE hijinks anymore. At least not until we can afford a new set of wheels (which from this point in time looks like never).

In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy my Dodge Dakota rental while it lasts. Woo hoo. A whole week until I'm car-less with appointments across Provo and Orem and three kids to taxi around.

Sometimes life just sucks.

How did it come to get smashed by the cement truck? Which insurance is this, yours or theirs?

You know, Sprig IS selling his mini-van, if you end up wanting to buy a new car.  It's pretty cheap, I think.

I was stopped in a the usual line of traffic in the left lane on Parkway on a Friday night and the guy driving the truck wasn't paying attention. Boom.

We actually managed to buy an '02 Kia Sedona with a warranty today, which is good since on Friday we are being forced to return the humongous Dodge Durango we'd been renting. And the best part about the new minivan was that we didn't have to pay a single penny to the dealership. Yee haw, no money down on a nice car.

But I still think car insurance companies suck.

Can I just tell you that I'm supposed to be researching right now?

That's how it's going.

I hate library research, because I can never FIND anything.  I know the information I need is somewhere in this great storehouse of knowlege, but I can never seem to discern the precise location, and it drives me nuts.

On the upside I was complaining about this to a professor this week, and he says he has exactly the same problem.  So hey, if a guy with his doctorate can't find what he's looking for, at least I know it's not just me.

Well, I'm supposed to be reading Water-Babies right now, so I know how you feel. It's much more fun to check my email even when I know there isn't going to be anything there than read a book that has been boring me for days, even though I have to do a presentation on it.
Title: Re: hows it going?
Post by: MsFish on October 01, 2004, 11:14:49 PM
Yeah, well, you want to impart some of that information literacy in this direction, Jam?

Stacer- what's Water-Babies?

Structured procrastination is a wonderful thing.  You wouldn't believe the things I've gotten done avoiding this research.  The problem with structured procratination is, eventually you do have to get around to doing the thing your not doing.  So now I'm procrastinating writing by researching.  Isn't it great the way that works?

Water-Babies, by Charles Kingsley.

CIP: The adventures of Tom, a sooty little chimney sweep with a great longing to be clean, who is stolen by fairies and turned into a water-baby.

Pub. date 1863.

Didactic, wandering. Told prettily, but not much of a story. WHO KNOWS why Tom becomes a water-baby and swims around with gills about his neck for most of the story. Certainly not me.

Structured procrastination: I am now doing my bills.

After being musicless since I got to Oz, I picked up a cheap used discman and have been rocking out all afternoon.

I go back to the States on Sunday, after one last trip to the beach Saturday.  I said all of my goodbyes today.  Man, this country ruled!

Title: Re: hows it going?
Post by: stacer on October 16, 2004, 09:23:12 PM
Just got back from a lovely weekend. Rather eventful, though. My uncle is a vacation control freak. After getting in last night after the wedding at 11:30 or something like that (wedding was at 4:30, they didn't cut the cake till *10*--sit-down dinner, dancing, live band, the works), he made us all leave by 8 this morning so that we could be where they wanted to go on the Cape by 10. Which meant, of course, that I had to get up at 7. Ug.

Along the way, he (in the lead car of three) takes several wrong turns, and our 1 hour drive turns into a 4 hour drive. We saw several lovely beaches and lighthouses along the way (including a beach that looks like it's full of little pebbles, but when you get closer you realize it's ALL shells--hundreds of thousands of little shells) and I had a nice long chat with my grandma, who was riding with me.

But it was a long day. After staying up till 3 Friday night (don't ask me why, because I don't know--I was restless or something), and then running around with the wedding stuff on Friday (including getting lost on the way to the wedding--I somehow found myself west in Providence instead of south in Newport... normally I have a great sense of direction!), and then a very long wedding celebration (ceremony at 4:30, left at 11, which I just realized I said already but I don't care).... Yeah. I was getting testy. We didn't arrive in Chatham, the intended destination, until 3 in the afternoon.

So instead of staying with my family in another motel, risking another asthma and allergy attack (apparently the Howard Johnson allows dogs and doesn't clean the rooms well after said doggies leave), I decided to sleep in my own bed tonight. They were just going to go to the hotel from there and hang out for the evening anyway.

I'm tired! Whine whine whine.` :'( Aren't you all glad you read this?

But Kim (my cousin who got married) was a lovely bride, and it was really nice to see my grandma and aunts and uncles and cousins. I only wish more could have come--a few had planned on it but ended up not being able to at the last minute.

it is impossible for me to relax in this house. My mother-in-law does not know how to be calm. Everyone could be sitting peacefully eating a breakfast already made (and NOT by my mil) and she, instead of eating, will start preparing a meal that we won't be eating for 10 hours. And not just throwing stuff in a crockpot, I mean, gathering ingredients for vegetables and such. She CANNOT STOP. It makes me nervous. It's like she can't be happy without having 15 problems to try and take care of. I just cannot relate to that.
Title: Re: hows it going?

Ah, the joys of being a multi-tasking woman. My grandma's the same way. It's hard to get her out of the kitchen on holidays, mainly because there's always something to be done when you have 45-50 people staying in the house. The aunts have become very good at taking over and insisting that Grandma go watch the kids play or talk with whoever the new arrival is.

On a brighter note (compared to my last post), just to round out the image of the wedding this weekend so y'all don't think I had a horrible weekend, I taught my Uncle Tom how to swing. And I taught my cousin Christy's daughter how to swing. Hmm, a lot of dancing going on. And my Aunt Liz told me the story of how she got Tom (they've been married for 7 years). Very funny--she jokes that in any other situation, she may have been considered a stalker. Yikes!  :D She's great. You probably had to be there.

My day consisted of the following:

1) a loud meeting that involved a lot of yelling and arguing

2) an employee stealing another employee's purse and wallet, but denying it and with no evidence we can't fire her

3) a frustrating customer who was mad because we refused to refund her more money than she actually PAID for an item.

My day. Well it was there. I felt mostly transparent through it, as I do most days. (May be why I don't get much work done.)

Classes from 11 am until 4:45 pm. Then I went to my room, changed into my work pants (and suspenders) and went to work. Finished around 10, and finally ended up doing a bit more work on my Nano map/magic system. And now I void my sleeping arragements I had with myself.

And today is still yesterday to me, yet everyone sees it as today. Two classes tomorrow and a good chunk of it to myself. We'll see how that goes.

I never had braces, and have a gap inbetween my front teeth through which I can squirt water at an astounding distance.

But to get back on the 'how's it going' thread, this weekend was distinguished by my getting 9 hours of sleep two nights in a row!!
Title: Re: hows it going?
Post by: stacer on October 24, 2004, 08:35:40 PM
I never needed braces. I have the amazing anomaly of all my teeth having grown in where they were supposed to be (eventually, though it was a bit scary when they first came in).

This is tempered by how cavity-prone said teeth can be. My sister's teeth are the same way, and her husband's are completely opposite (no cavities, needed braces), so they have an equal chance of their children having completely perfect, no-cavity straight teeth, or completely rotten, crooked teeth.
Title: Re: hows it going?

I never get cavities and my teeth are always white, but a problem I do have is that I have too many teeth. I lost my baby teeth then my adult teeth came in(or did they) then I lost my adult teeth, then the came in again, along with four extra canines, when I got my braces I had to have those four extras pulled and the other four(the ones that were supposed to be there) filed down by 1.5 milimeters, and they are still suspiciously long. on top of that I need a root canal next week, and my roots "go down to my knees" as said by my dentist, and on top of that,  I cant eat lettuce or any type of food that involves the grinding role of molars because mine are sharp with five needle like points on each, my molars dont grind, but thats okay cuz I can eat beef jerky like it's filet minion(or however it's spelled).

Someone I hadn't seen in four years came to see me at church yesterday. I was most pleasantly surprised. Certain potentials well worth pursuing have thus appeared, so I shall duly pursue. And thus perhaps have much less free time than I have appeared to regularly have. In case anyone notices a change in my posting habits.

So things are going well, to say the least.

Got engaged and was basically offered my dream job (pending if a few things work out beyond my control), so I'm pretty happy.  Just have to lick boards and graduate now...

Slow morning at the Family History Center. I've got a 590 page book I need to read, but the type is so small that I can only read so long before my eyes become too tired. I'm bored. Entertain me!

Well, I tried to start my car this evening and it died. Unfortuantely, I need to get to work, so I haven't had a chance to really see what is wrong with the car.
Fortunately, Sprig was nice enough to let me take the min-van he was supposed to have sold months ago. And forutnately, the mini-van started.

So I finally get to work, and after being there for ten minutes the police show up. I'm lucky they weren't here for that outstanding warrant I have. No, they wanted to check with the hotel for any unusual activity. Apparently there have been some burgalaries in the area tonight.

So now I'm waiting for some larcenous person to come in and harrass me.

finally due to my powers of persuasion, i give you something never before seen, an actual picture of...angel!
for those of you who dont know she has never ever allowed anyone, including herself to post or put up a picture of herself, she claims to be tragically unphotogenic, but I disagree, and now without further adoo....

Whoa.  So, Gemm is a serial killer with a fetish for fake redheads and T.F.O. has just given him his girlfriend's real name.

Not what I thought I'd be witnessing when I got up this morning.

Well that hair has either been digitally enhanced or chemically enhanced.  It's gorgeous though.

Post by: Maxwell on December 01, 2004, 09:14:25 PM
no it really grows out that way... not enhanced in the least, besides before know it would have cost her a fortune to keep dying that ridiculous amount of hair.
and I do agree it is in fact gorgeous.

I think fuzzy, that you are kind of right about it being digitally enhanced. Look at the background of the picture and you will notice that the colors are a bit off. Still, that is really bright hair.

The eyes are a little odd too. I think it's just a color issue. Some hue was turned up or soemthing.

cutting off four feet of hair...sinful!!

And yeah, that photo is oversaturated at the very least.

I dont think cutting off four feet of hair is sinful when you have 8 feet and seven inches to start with.

She had 8 feet of hair? What did she do, have a little cart following her to put her hair in? Or did it just drag along the ground? I am assuming she isn't 8 feet tall to begin with...

Was her dad named Ronald? and did he work for the largest restaraunt chain in the world? and was he embarrassed to talk about exactly what he did at work?

On a serious note, sorry to diss her hair, I blame it on the off-colors in the photo.  All apologies.
