Title: EUOL Sightings
Post by: Spriggan on June 17, 2005, 02:32:16 AM
Just a heads up EUOL will be on the Dragon Page radio/Podcast show this saturday.

***********
We're trying something new here. Lots of you have been asking for advanced notification (what, as opposed to prior notification?) of the upcoming interviews we'll be conducting on Cover to Cover. I assume this is so you can get your questions in front of our illustrious guests. Let's test that theory:

Interviews for Saturday, June 18, 2005

10:00 AM PST : Steve Alten - The Loch

11:00 AM PST : Vera Nazarian - The Clock King & The Queen of the Hourglass

11:30 AM PST : Brandon Sanderson - Elantris

You can phone in your questions to our comment line (206-600-GEEK) and we'll play them on the air to the guest during the interview. Or, Skype us at 'dragonpage' during the conversation. Alternately, you can email your questions to Summer if you're old fashioned.
******************

Here's info on how to get the program

http://www.dragonpage.com/tuneIn.html

You can also just download a MP3 of the program, though I'm not sure when they go up on the website.

Who's Summer? And when did email become old fashioned?

So should we be coming up with intelligent questions for this interview? Or should we just leave EUOL to the masses?  ;)

I'm sure it would be a great interview for the to be asking questions by the interviewee's girlfriend.

Well, we wouldn't tell them that. I'd just send in an email or phone in as a fangirl.  :)

More EUOL sightings, as posted by himself on his blog (http://www.brandonsanderson.com/blog.php?date=1118901600&PHPSESSID=963aaa264572f03a34ab89599b5a4d3b). See, he is doing some marketing. He just doesn't tell us about it.

Oh, and I appreciate the subtle jibe. Now I am officially known as a nag. Thanks sweetie!  ;) Just kidding.

Speaking of booksigning tours, what happened with Dave?

It's coming!  We're planning something major for late summer.  We'll be hitting a lot of cities, then end up at NasFic in Seattle.

An Elegy for Summer

Your life was brief but crowded
Your accomplishments were varied but forgetable
You perished along with the newness of email
And with the advent of Fall

I should be there on the tour with Dave.

This signing at Borders actually went really well.  Thanks to those of you who stopped by (or, in the case of some, hung out the entire time.)  We sold eight books, gave out some flyers, and got invited back.  Pretty good day, if I do say so myself!

That would be referring to MsFish and me. EUOL is being quite nice in that reference--MsFish and I spent more than half of the time in the Children's/YA section lusting after all the books we wanted to buy (rather than keeping him company, but he was talking to people). There was a sale--"Buy 3 books and get the 4th free"--and a whole bunch of YA books new in paperback that I wanted. I must have picked up at least twenty different books and brought them over to EUOL thinking I was going to buy them (in groups of 2 or 3, not 20 all at once), only to put them all back because I am poor and I can get them at the library. So that was my booksigning experience.

You shouldn't put me in a bookstore. It is like putting an alcoholic in a liquor store. Sometimes, though, libraries are even worse--that is like putting an alcoholic in a liquor store and then telling them it's all free and to go at it.  ;)

I KNOW! It's pretty sad to see me walk out of the library. You know I'm probably not going to read all 20 of those books, and I'll probably not return any of them on time. Well, I did a good job of it when I had to read them for my program--sometimes I had a good 80-90 books checked out at once, standing in stacks on my bedroom floor. I don't like to spend a lot of time at the library reading to know if it's the book I want to take home, so I just take them all home and go through them there. When you're working on a large paper, you'll probably use most of them.

I read a lot more when I had three hours or so a day at work to read and get paid for it.

I didn't want to start a whole "Hey EUOL thread," but I wanted to be sure to get your attention. Hey EUOL, check your email sometime tomorrow (or hey, tonight's good too). I have a timely question for you.

I will be in and out of Seagull Book stores, but will try to swing in.

Is it frowned upon to bring your own book to a signing?  Is that bad form?  Will the bouncers politely show me the door, all the whilst punching me in the kidneys?

Why would you bring Chickens to Brandon's signing?

Actually, bringing whatever of the author's books you have already bought elsewhere to that author's signing at some bookstore is perfectly acceptable.

Not my book.  :) Brandon's book.  The one I got for Father's Day...  The one I bought myself for Father's day.

Remember, if any cute fangirls throw themselves at you while I'm not there to defend you, nod politely, sign their books, and send them on their way.

You are already spoken for.  ;)
Title: Re: EUOL Sightings

Well, I'm not a fangirl (the facial hair makes that obvious), and I'm not cute (probably again due to the facial hair) nor did I throw myself at Brandon, but I did meet him today.  You know, I've been on several discussion boards for over five years now, and never met any of them in real life.  Although I haven't been here long, it's nice to have met two TWGers already (Rob and now Brandon).

Anyway, I forgot to bring my book for Brandon to sign, so I just had him sign my chest.

As it turns out, I wont be there, sadly.  But my brother will, with my book.

Oh--whoops.  Just noted that the 16th is a Tuesday.  That's the day we're signing.  (Though now I'll make certain to call and confirm again.  I could have sworn they said Wednesday.)

Dang, too bad.  I considered hanging around to drop by and see you, but things are hectic today.  Still, I hope your signing went well!  And, I hope they had more copies of your book than they had of mine!  (They only had three on hand.  We sold those quickly, then I sat around chatting with Dave for another hour plus.)
Title: Re: EUOL Sightings
Post by: stacer on August 16, 2005, 08:31:21 PM
You'd think if they had a signing planned, they'd order at least 10 copies. Surely they'd sell at least half that, and could have the rest of the signed copies on the shelf with the "signed copy!" sticker if they didn't sell. They do that with other authors. (That's how I got a signed copy of an Orson Scott Card book.)

I'm glad I got my book in advance!

It sounds like my mom went over and got in signed (seeing as I'm sadly stuck in Reno), and she says she had a short chat with you, Brandon.

At any rate, I'm glad to have my book signed (or rather, I will when it comes home in a few days), and I can't wait to read it!

That's disappointing especially since BYU had several months to get books in, they were the ones that wanted him to be there this week.
Title: Re: EUOL Sightings
Post by: EUOL on August 17, 2005, 06:10:23 PM
Yeah, Jade.  I did talk to your mom.  It took me a moment to connect who's mom she was, though!

Don't be TOO hard on BYU.  Remember, the book sold out last month, and had to go to a second printing.  Because of this, there weren't many copies to be found.  They did try and order more.

What they should be chastised for is not ordering more copies of Dave's books.  They only had two copies of each Runelords book, and he sold the first two quite quickly--and then was left trying to sell second and third books in the series without having any first books.

Actually I'll get in their case for both since it's apparent that they didn't bother to try and order either of yours or Dave's book(s), that's just stupidity or laziness.  And quite shameful on their part.
Title: Re: EUOL Sightings
Post by: Firemeboy on August 17, 2005, 09:06:00 PM
Yeah, they had about 30 copies of my book.  I sat next to Jennie Hansen who has written 15 books now.  She reviewed my book on Meridian and was very nice to promote my book to others stopping by the table.  I sold 6-8 copies, and probably 7 of those were because people stopped by to buy Jennie's book.

I'm having trouble reconciling those two statements.

Because they didn't even bother to get extra copies of Dave's books.  Plus Tor printed 1,500 copies of Elantris just last month so there were books around Media Play managed to get about 30 only a few weeks ago.
Title: Re: EUOL Sightings
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on August 18, 2005, 09:36:01 AM
from my understanding, most of those 1500 were to fill previous commitments though. Which means if Media Play got a full 30 of them, there probably weren't very many left for anyone to order.
Title: Re: EUOL Sightings

only about a third were for backorders.

So, if you were in Reno, does that mean you are going to be in So Cal soon? Is there a page with the dates and times of your future appearances?

And, just in case you see this soon enough to do any good, Smith's Garage in Provo (behind Deseret) is a very great place. I took my car in because I had been stupid and driven on the freeway with my emergency brake on. (No more driving and talking on the cell phone for me!) I was certain that the brake pads would need replacing, if not the brakes themselves. Most mechanics would take advantage of that belief, but they didn't. Just charged me $20 to align the breaks. That was over 2 years (and about 20,000 miles) ago, so it's safe to say they were right about the brakes.

It was JadeKnight who was in Reno, not EUOL.

But I do know EUOL will be in So Cal next month, probably the first weekend of September if I remember correctly, I'll get him to post those schedules and where as soon as he can.  I don't know where exactly or I'd tell you myself.
