Title: manuscripts
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on February 16, 2004, 03:35:21 PM
Need some peer feedback on a manuscript? Well, now's your chance. I find myself ahead at work for the first time since I started the job, and I need something to do. I think I've already exhausted the recreational possibilities of Quantum Muse, and I don't want to increase my browsing anyway. Since I'm still uncomfortable writing very much here, I want to read your stuff. Gimme gimme gimme. At home ([email protected]) or at work (ehlerse at hunterlab dot com).

...are you sure?  Because I've got a 375,000 word manuscript that is in dire need of some revisions.

got it. I'll start reading in spare time. I realized, hwoever, that tomorrow will be an exception> i have 6 hours of meetings. But I think Wed-Fri will be different.

Given that I'm spending yet another insanely late night at work, I doubt I'll be able to rejoin our writing group any time soon. If you want to use this time to read and give feedback on Krag, I'd greatly appreciate it.

You too, EUOL. And send me Way of Kings.

I already read. I was thinking you'd be back in the group sometime so I withheld comment. I'll see if I can muster up some comments.

Hey EUOL - I've just finished a major reading project and my slate is clear.  If you could send me the manuscript of your latest (The Way of Kings?) I'd like to read it.  If you really really prefer, I can wait (and wait and wait) for the hard copy manuscript to make its way through various readers.
But if I read it electronically I promise I'll reference all my comments to page numbers.

speaking of which, EUOL, I finished reading, and I liked. I have some general comments. I haven't got much that narrows down to pages, so I probably won't reference page numbers like Kije promises. But I'll be sending you that email soon.

Your call, Kije.  The hard copy is floating around various places right now.  If you want to go electronic, just send me an email at gandalf ala timewastersguide.

SE:  I still intend to respond to that email you sent me regarding your own project.  I'm behind on my emails.  A lot.  I'll try and be proactive and send you something this week.

(Oh, and BTW, I don't expect specific page references.  Anything you can give me on the general flow of the story--particularly if you think sections are too slow or need to be cut--will help.  And, be honest.  Remember, I'll be releasing this book in a national market.  You  could pull punches for other friends when you read their books, since they have time to improve before they try publishing.  I don't have that luxury anymore.  This will be on the shelves competing with Jordan, Martin, and Hobb.  If you think sections of it aren't competitive with the current market, I need to know what they are.)

well, don't worry about mine, actually. I changed my mind, and I have a much subtler (and easier) issue to deal with on that ending now.

I'll be hard. I know it's a little slow at the beginning, but it's more of a problem of not getting to know who's who in my mind. I'll cogitate and respond tonight.

EUOL, if it makes you feel any better, I'd never read one of those other people's books, but I'm looking forward to yours.

EUOL, I sent you an email on Sunday about Way of Kings. I hope you got it.

Got it, and am planning to reply.  I'll probably get to it this weekend--have a lot on my plate the next few days.  However, thank you immensely for the comments.

np. I just wish I could have been more helpful on what scenes to cut.

Last week I tried to send an email to [email protected] but it came back both times as undeliverable.  Maybe it has something to do with the server change?  So the text of the email is...

Brandon: please send me a copy of the manuscript that you're having reviewed and read at the moment (is it called The Way of Kings or something like that?).  If the file is over 1 MB I can't accept it with this address, so if that's the case maybe you can send it in installments?  If not I'll just wait until the hard copy makes its way to me.  (You'd have to let me know so I can come and get it when it's my turn.)

When I refer to "this address" I mean the address I sent it from ([email protected])

You can be next on the list for the paper manuscript.  However, Tage is only about a hundred pages into the first part, which makes him about a third of the way done.  It would be another couple of weeks until I could get it to you.  Do you want me to send the electronic copy, or do you want to wait?

(By the way, the address is gandalf at rickstranger, not gandalf at twg.)

It will be my pleasure to wait, then.  Always more fun reading it on paper than staring at a screen.

Tage: when you're finished (no rush) let me know and I'll drop by to pick it up.  Apparently we don't live too far from each other.
