Title: A question for Dr. Pepper.
Post by: Gemm: Rock & Roll Star; Born to Rock on October 07, 2003, 08:07:49 PM
Or anyone else who has medical training and other whatnots.

What exactly does a migrane come from? I've always been inflicted with this pain and it is still hitting me today(like right now). It hurts like a crazy mofo, right in the front right portion of my skull, above my forehead. My only rationale is that its a tumor. If I were to just say its a headache then I would just massage my skull or take a nap. I've even taken some Advil Migrane, but not much help there. Auuuugghghh!

Well scientists used to think it was all caused by vascular problems in the brain, but the causes are now more often linked to neuro-chemistry.
There are some triggers that could be causing attacks but you should really see an MD.

Some other migrane causes.
Reduced Magnesium Levels. Researchers have noted a drop in magnesium levels before or during a migraine attack. Magnesium plays a role in nerve cell function; reduced levels could be a destabilizing factor, causing the nerves in the brain to misfire, possibly even accounting for the auras that many sufferers experience.

Female Hormones. The female hormones progesterone and estrogen appear to play some role but it appears that it is their fluctuation, not their presence, that is associated with migraines. More research is needed to determine each hormone's precise effects.

Hypotension. One study suggested that some migraine headaches might be precipitated by a sudden drop in blood pressure (hypotension). (Conversely, some cases have suggested that migraine can also cause hypotension.)

Migraine Triggers
A wide range of events and conditions can alter conditions in the brain that bring on nerve excitation and trigger migraines. They include, but are not limited to the following:
Emotional stress (although the headaches often erupt after the stress has eased).

Intense physical exertion (such as after lifting, athletic endeavor, and even bowel movements or sexual activity).

Abrupt weather changes (such as Chinook winds).

Bright or flickering lights.

High altitude.

Travel motion.

Changes in sleep patterns.

Low blood sugar has been known to trigger headaches and fasting can often precipitate migraines.

Chemicals found in certain foods may trigger headaches in some people. More than 100 foods have the capacity to trigger migraine headache.

Personally, I think this is your problem Gemm. You need to stop taking estrogen pills.

The big cause for you might be stress, or poor sleeping habits, have any tests or problems in college lately?

Well nothing totally outrageous. No my sleeping habits are fine. Usually asleep by midnight, and I have an 8 am class on M,W,Th, and F. I have been doing a lot of stuff lately. Not totally acidemic. Been doing some newspaper stuff, radio meeting today, public relations stuff. All of its really not that stressful. But I did start to do my math homework, then Wham-o! migrane. I dunno.

I've been able to keep myself pretty busy. Although Juliet always pops into my mind every-so-often. But thats on the back burners for now. Only problem is the school work. I never find myself actually doing it. Why? I dunno, maybe because thats not how I learn. Oh well, gotta suck it up and eat my steel now.

The reason for my crapness at school was a lack of ability to do revision or homework. I'm probably better than my grades suggest. Okay, possibly.

Well, I also suck royally at testing. I believe its nothing more than nothing. Maybe even less than that. Beats me. I just don't like tests because they don't accurately portray my knowledge of a subject. Which yes, sometimes I know little about. And I like it that way. So I can bigot any argument about the subject. Like Stocieometry. This sucks. Chemistry is stupid. There, I said it.

And I'm about 6 hours away from home. I don't really miss it that much. The thing I miss most is my dog. He's so great.

One thing about stress is that often we don't feel it very much while it's happening, although it's there, and just about any change in lifestyle or activity can add to the load. If you've started adding new activities lately, that may be a good part of the trigger.

As soon as you start to get a migraine, drink a can of coke. It works wonders for a lot of migraines (including mine), but not all of them and only if you hit it early.

I used to do that and got addicted to the Coke.  I started getting headaches if I didn't drink it.

I just like coke. Any medical excuse I can use is ok in my book.

He did say Coke, but then again it is Homsar. So who knows what he's trying to say.

Not all captial letters are intentional. I think we should begin an investigation that will destroy any future political potential for HoM.

Oh yeah, and marijuana is good for migraines too.  And heroin.

"I don't technically have blood."
"And my brain medication contains trace amounts of black-tar heroin, so donating plasma is out."

Speaking of stress relief, I just essentially stole from my VP this weird "Tangle." A bizarre string of macaroni shaped plastic bits. They're all flush against each other and rotate.
This thing is like crack. For the last 2 hours straight I've been manipulating it in my left hand while operating my phone and typing with my right. It's spooky.

is this the same VP that hates you?

And to deal w/ my stress I have been working out. Or lifting boxes to be more specific. There is something rewarding about manual labor, as long as its not back breaking and your in a place you like.

The one I hate, yeah.
It's not REALLY stealing. She offered me one of these stress toys earlier because I bitched out loud about a retard I talked to. Yeah, I shouldn't have done it, at least not where any management could hear, but oh well. She had them all out and I ... was freaked out by this bendy poodle thing that looked like a cross between mutant poodle from the movie HULK and well, a servant of hell. But then my curiosity arose about this Tangle thing and I played with it. Then I kept it.

Also, they're buying everyone a stress ball. Weird, but I guess it's a benefit. Instead of a ball though, I'm getting a Gumby. Too bad they didn't let me get Pokey too.
