Books / Re: review: The Devil in the White City
« on: August 08, 2007, 02:47:00 AM »
I liked this book, but it had some serious structure issues. First it wanted to be the book about a serial killer which it did pretty admirably. But it also wanted to chronicle the fair. It didnt do that as well. University of chicago has a great website about the white city btw with an insane amount of photos.

Cool fair facts.

Nicolai Tesla built the fairs generators for westing house.

It was the first city lit by electric light.

Frederic law olmstead designed the grounds.

oh and the murder story.............. tres creepy

Well Shrain, we should start with what you have to record with.

Is it an Ipod w/ a set of speakers or a Digital audio recorder, or something else?

The big thing is to record it in an MP3 format with some sort of program... I like Audacity its free, powerful and fairly easy to use, but you could try something else.

We have FTP access through "E" so thats not a prob.

Ideally you should shoot for a 30 minute interview.

Id build in a little lead time to get set up, chitchat and relax. If you get phlegmy bring a little water. Also try and write down a few questions on note cards before. Dont script! It'll sound like your reading.

But Im getting ahead of myself...

what equipment are you working with?

Recording challenges, or lack therof

Issue the firste... People think conventions are hard to get into. I got a press pass because I was from TWG and it wasnt really that hard.

All you need is a buisness card, and a boatload of recording equipment... but the payoff is huge, more on that later.

Issue the second... Conventions are NOISEY. I was obsessed with sound quality and terrifed I was taking horrid audio. I now know I have an awesometacular mic. Also I found out that the press folks were AWESOME. Yes they needed caps, first of all they had free snacks, second of all they gave me an office to record in. Cool, youbetcha.

Issue the thirde... Talent... I have little ;) but Stacy and Candice brought enough in spades.

So yeah it worked out and I hate to say it but I made it seem easy. I think I just got really lucky, but hey luck counts right. The only thing I don't like is the end which is abrupt, but I had to cover a lot and editing wasn't being my friend.

Just an FYI

Episode recording times for the two Podcasts so far a little over an hour each, editing time 4 hours per episode. printing buisness cards and arranging meetings and stuff about 1.5 hours for about 11.5 hours of time total.

Fun hunh?

Any questions or ideas folks?

it was a blast for me too...

So tomorrow I will bring all the copies for you to bring back, of course Wizards can take it off our site too if they want or if things dont work right on the CD's. Er and DVD.

I did it on both. Mostly because I didnt want you to have 8 CD's to bring home. Yeah 8. You guys wanted WAV files and those were a half gig each podcast. MP3 and M4A files prolly could have all been put on one, but I didnt think about that until after I burned the first 4 Cd's... so.

I really hope you'll be available again for this because I enjoyed the heck out of it.

Ok, so TWR is now officially started with an awesome interview. I know its hefty, but I bet all you non Dial Up folks will appreciate it. E and I have 3 of the little devils finished and I plan to be up in the DC area again in a few weeks (if just for the day) to do another. Hopefully this is gonna be a twice a month thing, but please don't be disappointed if its a one a month deal. Its um, a little time consuming.

This is a thread for comments and suggestions on how to make TWR better, and for us to iron out RSS issues with Sprig. But feel free to gush, or berate us.

Excelsior!
