Role-Playing Games / Fading Suns
« on: July 23, 2005, 07:27:04 PM »
Im always on the lookout for a good Sci-Fi RPG. Once upon a time I owned FS 1st edition, but there were issues with character creation and some of the rules.

Drive through RPG has FS 2nd edition availible for free this week. Its a better game IMHO. What make FS interesting is that it has a very Dune like atmosphere, with noble houses jockying for control against the Church and guilds as serfs starve and bleed. Its also got a better reason for sword dueling (stupid personal energy sheilds) and some other goodies.

Download it for free if you want a great free sci-fi RPG with lots of flavor.

On August 28th HBO turns its amazing creative juices on Rome specifically the Rome of Julius Caesar. Im really excited about it because I think HBO can do Rome right and make it a believable place So I plan to do a nice Latin Student review of Rome.

Diamond Dreamers - words and music by Gary Trainer
Atomic Swindlers

Hologram Rose floats in Ste-re-o
She is a Twenty-third Century Girl
Like an Egyptian Queen with laser wings
She explores the cool light seas
Across the galaxies with zero gravity
She drifts in a radio haze
And dreams of Vic-tor- y
To be eternity free
Silver stars splash against her cheeks

Oh, Diamond Dreamers,
Super Space Sleepers
Nothing will stop you from Shi----ning.
Open all dream lines, fall into future skies
Diiiiiiiamonds explode.

Jukebox Tom lives in a hydrogen bomb
He was a replica of himself
A Broken Astronaut with invasion shock
He forgot to light his other half
As his capsule drifts into a black hole shift
Rose captures it all on film
She Begins to play it back
In rapid fire blasts
As Tom scatters in a radio laugh

Oh, Diamond Dreamers,
Super Space Sleepers
Nothing will stop you from Shi----ning.
Open all dream lines, fall into future skies
Diiiiiiiamonds explode.

Chaos Twins begin to Shed-their-skin
As they orbit endless galaxies
Electric nova myths
With telepathic gifts they
Seek dangers in the cool light seas
So Jukebox Tom begins his infinite job
Blasting off into a blue collapse
A Nitro Private Eye
With a hologram life
Captivated by their Other Half

Oh, Diamond Dreamers,
Super Space Sleepers
Nothing will stop you from Shi----ning.
Open all dream lines, fall into future skies
Oh, Diamond Dreamers,
Super Space Sleepers
Diiiiiiiamonds
Explode.

SPrig and I are making a statement.

We need more conversations about drunken dwarves messily destroying dragons and spending their ill-gotten gains on ale and whores.

Well here is my two cents... if you dont like the Superfly thread then complaining about it is pretty lame. Im not trying to be mean, but come on. Its a centralized enough thread that stays out of the way, one that you dont have to read if you dont want to. If you find the discussion girly, or repetitive or whatever then dont read it.
Its been a pretty good draw for the site and people like it. If you want a thread to discuss those other things then make one. But please dont lock people out of the thread that they made because you want to hijack it. Thats against the rules of the site. I realize you guys are probably joking, but a couple of people have mentioned to me that they think that you werent joking and that you were just being jerks.  People were having a conversation, you dont stop the conversation because you want to play a joke. But you also didnt need to lock the old thread. Its stuff like that that could potentially turn someone off to the site.

So the holy roman emipre ,... it isnt holy roman or an empire discuss....

Role-Playing Games / Tri-Stat discussion
« on: June 19, 2005, 03:05:23 AM »
After a nice long look at Dreaming Cities I can say I really like it, not as much as Ex Machina but its a great system. The one gripe I have is that character creation is very-very involved. There is a big learning curve, mainly because there is more than one way to build the same character.

For instance if you want a character who can cast spells you could take the Dynamic power attribute or Power Flux or build them into an item of power or about a half dozen other things.  Why? Its all for flavor.  But a lot of people may not like it or understand why they would build a game like that. The point costs are all different, for an effect that is basically the same.

The Tri-stat system is definitely a cooperative system between the GM and player, one where character is very very important. This is a good thing because character development can be a little slower than other games.

Dreaming cities has some cool setting info, but only one setting I think I'd want to game in. Its called The World at Twilight and it takes place as myths and legends come flooding back into the mundane world after the destruction of the world tree. Character types range from the aware mundane to the embodiment of gods and legends. Want to play King Arthur or Little Red Riding Hood then go ahead.

Ex-machina isnt too different than Dreaming cities in the rules dept. but it more than makes up for it with some amazing settings. In fact 3 out of the 4 settings are so cool I'd play them tomorrow.

this really should have been in Happy things go Here,... but I wanted the dramatic title rant effect,

Its like an explosion, which explains why lovelorn Auzzies come here. I mean in the last 5 months we've gone from 5 girl type carbon based lifeforms to 10.

Its like finding out math is all wrong. :D

Everything Else / Small Press Expo in Bethesda MD
« on: June 02, 2005, 06:06:25 AM »
In 2005, SPX returns to its two-day format on September 23 and 24 with the Small Press Summit for artists, publishers, retailers and aspiring independent comics creators on Sunday, September 25.

SPX will bring together over 300 artists and publishers to meet their readers, booksellers, distributors, and each other. SPX will be open to the public from 3pm Friday, September 23rd and run through 8pm that evening, followed by a big Opening Night Party taking up the hotel bar. The celebration continues Saturday from 10am to 7pm, culminating in the 9th annual Ignatz Awards Reception. In addition, expect great programming all weekend long for you to enjoy!

SPX 2005 marks the ninth annual presentation of The Ignatz Awards for outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning. The Ignatz, named after George Herriman's brick-wielding mouse, recognizes outstanding work that challenges popular notions of what comics can achieve, both as an artform and as a means of personal expression. The Ignatz is a festival prize, the first such of the United States comic book industry. Winners will be determined by ballot during SPX and presented at the gala Ignatz Awards ceremony.

As with every year all profits from SPX will go to support the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, protecting the First Amendment rights of comic book readers and professionals. In 2004, SPX was able to help the CBLDF raise over $22,000.

Everything Else / Deep Throat
« on: June 01, 2005, 06:24:04 AM »
Not the movie, the scandal... and one of the more interesting stories to have broken in the last 10 years.

It interesting how much Jelousy and loyalty to the FBI as an organization played into Deputy Director Felts decision to talk to Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. For those of you who dont know, he had been groomed by J. Edgar Hoover to replace him (as much as Hoover groomed anyone) but was stymied when the White House put their own yes man in the FBI's top spot. His anger over losing the prestigious top spot and fear of the FBI being hurt by the various illegal operations the White House was having it do were key factors in the whistle blowing. In the Nixon tapes he was strongly suspected by Dean and Nixon, but discounted because he literally had a huge amount to lose, and because it would be embarassing to fire him on a whim not to mention dangerous. If he hadnt been the source of the leak forcing him out might have influenced him to spill what he knew about everything.

Felt was not innocent of illegal activities, having been convicted of black bag ops against fringe groups in the US. In fact only a pardon from President Reagan kept him out of jail. (I wonder if he had been known as Deep Throat then if he would have still been pardoned).

He is definately an interesting man, and I must say revealing him as Deep Throat has raised more questions in my mind than it has answered.
