Jerry Seinfeld is making a movie/documentary about his development of a new stand-up act. It will have to be pretty dang funny if it wants to be funnier than the trailer.

Wow--there's some very premature reporting going on, if what that guy says is true. Hard to believe that abc news would mess up so badly, but it's even harder to believe the ban was as big as it was reported.

With that last statement I heartily agree.

They might, but their Star Trek online game was pretty lame.

As for Wizards, despite my own misgivings Magic Online is incredibly popular. Go figure.

I finally downloaded this game (since I got sick sick of waiting for them to mail it out), and it's pretty interesting. For one thing, you have to go through a lot of Basic Training before they'll even let you play a real map--and the training comes complete with a drill sergeant, though he doesn't yell at you as much as you would expect.

The thing I like about the game is that it's stupidly hard to actually hit anything--not only does kickback and walking and even breathing move your weapon around (thus ruining your aim), but there are loads of built in modifiers that reduce your accuracy (whether you're standing or crouched or prone, whether you have the sight up, how fast you're moving, etc). It seems dumb to like a game because the guns are innacurate, but that's just a balancing factor that contributes to the game's real point--you have to work as a team to get anything done.

You see, almost every shooter out there suffers from the Teen Wolf syndrome: a single powerhouse player can win the game by himself, running and jumping and shooting with amazing accuracy while his teammates stand back and hope they get a chance to do something. In America's Army I have yet to see this happen, and I'm starting to doubt that it could--the game highly favors a team that can coordinate and strategize. Very cool.

I'm almost out of Basic Training and ready to try a real map. I'll tell you what happens.

What's the link?

And I'm not so sure it's a good thing. If I remember correctly, we never signed away creative ownership of these ideas--we just promised to do so if we won and Wizards paid us. If I'm not getting paid for my settings, I'd rather save them and use them for future novels. I suppose this doesn't prevent me from doing so, but I think it's pretty under-handed.

Yeah, they've had those cards available for download since the game was released. Makes sense that we should link to it, I suppose.

I'm not sure how making fun of ancient Greece applies to our current discussion, but thanks anyway.

Video Games / Greek Game Ban

I'm kind of surprised that no one has reacted to my news post on the game ban in Greece. Despite my expression of disbelief, the news is very real--if you don't trust gamespot, the same story is running on msnbc.com.

So what do you think of this? If you live in Greece, you can be fined tens of thousands of dollars just for owning a computer game-regardless of whether you play it or not. If you visit Greece as a tourist and take along your gameboy, you could go to jail. Sure, those of us who neither live in nor visit Greece have very little to fear, but it's a frightening precedent in two ways--first, it's a sign that Greece could enact even more totalitarian laws in the future, and second, there's a possibility that similar laws could spread to other countries.

What do you guys think of this?

Agreed. I look forward to seeing more creature theme decks, mainly because I'm always tempted to build them myself.

Okay, the initial rumor I heard about Tribal was incorrect. It turns out it's not an actual mechanic, but more like the Invasion-block Domain powers--ie, a type of ability rather than a named mechanic. Whereas the Domain spells grew more powerful when you had multiple land types in play, the Tribal spells grow more powerful when you have several creatures of a given type. The only example I remember off the top of my head is a red instant that costs one red mana, and then produces one red mana for each goblin you have in play.

Most of this news, by the way, I'm picking up from www.mtgnews.com, so you can look at some of the cards for yourself.

According to the rumors, morphing a face-down creature is not a timed ability--ie, it doesn't go onto the stack. It happens instantly, like tapping a land for mana.

Banding would be an interesting one to bring back--it disappeared because the designers didn't really like it, from what I understand, but I think a lot of that is because they didn't implement it well. I'd be interested to see what they could do with it.

Yeah, Tribal been around for a while in unnamed form. Kind of like when they started using Haste instead of "this creature is unaffected by summoning sickness."
