Of everything on that list, The Hulk is the one I'd like to see the least...though I'd still like to see it.

Thanxx P-Dawg.  Personally I am eagerly awaiting League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.  Not only am I a big fan of the comic, but the trailers just look too cool for words.  This will probably be Sean Connery's last outing as a two-fisted action hero (unless a bizarre plot to take over all the world's nursing homes alerts Gran'pa Bond), but at least he will go out with a bang.  I hear they already have a sequel planned.

I am still reserving judgement on Hulk.  The Hulk was one of my favorite characters as a kid and one of the main inspirations for me to take up powerlifting (yes, I know it sounds like a daft reason), so I am keeping my fingers crossed.  After the abyssmal Daredevil, though, I feel uneasy with Hollywood touching any Marvel property exept X-Men (well, Blade still ruled).

This really isn't a spoiler since it has been in every newspaper from here to Bombay, but Gary Oldman will be portraying rogue wizard Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

And of course, the one film that I definitely cannot miss under ANY circumstances is going to be Return of the King!  I am looking forward to seeing Shelob.  And word has it that Peter Jackson has been approached to direct The Hobbit some time in 2004.  Could you imagine seeing Smaug on the big screen.  Makes me go all shivery just thinking about it.

I wonder who'll they get to play Bilbo.....
Title: Re: Baited breath

uh... the same guy as before?

And yeah, hobbit would be cool. I would like for parts of the silmarion to get the treatment though. Or, failing that, for GW to get the rights to do minitures for it... they are doing a balins moria expedition set, and its rumoured they have acquired the liscence to hobbit and silmarrion already.

He seems a little old. Yes, I know the magic of make up etc, but even when they show him in the cave in the intro to FOTR he's got a gnarled and wrinkley hand.

Yea that actor would be out of the question....

A whole movie of  a middle aged hobbit played by an elderly actor just wouldn't work, even with stretching the face and things like that.

Ian Holme IS getting a bit long in the tooth.  Who else would make a good Bilbo?  Maybe Paul McGann if they did the same special effects as with Elijah Wood and company.

Who was the guy that played the most recent Dr. Who--the one in the American TV movie? He'd be a great Bilbo.
Title: Re: Baited breath
Post by: Mr_Pleasington on May 08, 2003, 02:33:10 AM
Y'know, I think I still have that American TV Dr. Who movie around here somewhere.  Man, that seems like a while back.

I have got to say that I'd like to see Ian Holme in the part.  I think with the right make up and special effects that he could pull it off admirably.  He was a great Bilbo in the movies and was a great Frodo in the BBC radio dramatization (which I own and treasure).  He deserves the part...at least in my book.

Actually, Fell, Paul McGann WAS the last bloke to play Doctor Who on American tv (in that tv movie a few years back).  Dang, yo.  You must have been tuned in to my wavelength without even knowing it.  That's just spooky.  And just for you completionists, the last thing Paul McGann did in the US was his role of the vampire researcher in Queen of the Damned.

And we can get Tom Baker to star as another hobbit! or a dwarf!

Anyway, I just think hobbits make good eatin'. I'll wager Dr. Who does too.

Just as long as they don't have Tom Baker play another elf. That was just sad to watch....

Wow, Slant, that's pooky. I think it was meant to be. And while we're at it, let's get the last British Dr. Who in there too, as another hobbit or something. He was my favorite Doctor.

Post by: Slant on May 08, 2003, 07:48:52 PM
By the last British Dr. Who I am assuming you mean Sylvester McCoy (Paul McGann, also being British, was technically the last British Dr. Who, but I know you mean the last one to play him in the tv series).  Sly McCoy could be added in as one of Bilbo's mooching relatives who are always trying to get him to part with a few pennies or some of his good china.

The more I learn about the Hulk the more apprehensive I become: he's one of my favorite heroes, and the movie just doesn't instill any confidence that it was handled the right way. I like Ang Lee, and Jennifer Connelly is hot, but is that enough to save the movie?

On the other hand, everything I see about "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" gets me excited to see more. I know relatively little about that comic (virtually nothing, actually) but the movie looks incredible.

NO, no it isn't enough to save it. But the Hulk finally looks the way he should on the screen. This thing is a monster, not just a monstrous human. He's bigger than any human ever and he doesn't even share the right dimensions. While I don't know if it will be another Spidey or X-Men, I'm pretty sure we'll get a good treat.

Just want to add that when you watch an adaptation, such as these movies are, we're looking at another creators interpretation of the original. We're not supposed to get the feel exactly "right" except in terms of the feel the new creator is looking for.

Now, naturally that doesn't mean you have to agree with or like the new creator's vision, and often that vision can be due to a complete unfamiliarity with the original character/property. But I do think it means you should give the new creator a fair shake when it comes to evaluating what he's done.

So, feel free to be disgruntled with the possibility, I just wanted to add an intellectual element to why I'm still excited for it and to give you something else to think about in preparing for it.

I got an A in my literature and film class in college--I'm well acquainted with the concept of adaptations.

Perhaps I should explain myself--the main thing (pretty much the only thing) that bothers me about the movie is the hulk looks like a cartoon. I have yet to see a clip from a trailer or commercial that makes me beleive the hulk actually exists. We have the technology to do stuff like Gollum, and yet the Hulk seems like a flashback to "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" (Which, incidentally, still had better creature effects than either of the Star Wars prequels.)

Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on May 12, 2003, 02:56:45 PM
Oh, well, then in that case, yes, Ang Lee and Jennifer Connoly CAN save it :)

Just kiddin ya.

Although, it can, at least a little. If you can get past the visuals to the feel. If you have poor visuals, obviously the over all quality is going to drop, but it doesn't necessarily mean the whole movie's going to crap. The writing/acting/directing could be incredible and make it all worth it. I personally haven't been bothered by the visuals I've seen. I like how it looks. So let me repeat it one more time, I'm excited to see it.

Didn't mean to imply that you didn't understand adaption, I just wanted the terms out in plain sight for the purposes of the conversation. Just so you know, I have a very high opinion of the intelligence and knowledge of most people at TWG.

I know you do. I was mostly just reacting to a recent conversation with somebody else, who was very uppity about the whole idea. You caught the brunt of it because he's not here :)

I'm still excited to see it, just very...'apprehensive' is really the best word. It could very well be awesome.

Does anyone else think it's odd that Hulk has gotten such a huge amount of marketing and merchandise, but X2 didn't really get any? They have Hulk breakfast cereal, for goodness sake, but I haven't even seen X2 action figures.

X2 has breakfast cereal.

Little circles with X's in them.

There was some other inane X2 food merchandice. I cant remember it though. Milk or something.

I saw X2 action figures at Walmart friday morning. The Wolverine is a VAST improvement over both versions of Wolverine from the first movie. Also, the Nightcrawler is one I'm looking forward to adding to the diorama on my desk.

But for the most part, yeah, I concur. I gots ta try me those Hulk Flakes (tm)

Title: Re: Baited breath
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on May 12, 2003, 04:40:24 PM
Yes, you're right. The Diorama is actually a collection or real people being tortured for my amusement. I want hte actor who PLAYED Nightcrawler. Not the action figure.

Seriously, it actually isn't really a diorama. It's more just all my action figures posed, though most of them are set up to be interacting with at least two or three others. For example, Storm Shadow, Snake Eyes, and Darth Maul are in a rumble against Luke, Quigon, and Mace Windu; and Spider Man is swinging in to save a perpetually grinning MJ from  a threatening Venom while the OTHER spidey, the Scarlet Spider, and Daredevil form an uneasy alliance with Venom to battle some mysterious force no one can see but is vaguely over my head somethere (they're all shooting/looking at something up in the air). I really have no excuse for the X-Men though, they're merely lined up in a way that seems balanced and pleasing to me around Prof X (Logan, Storm, and Rogue on one side, with Jean, Cyclops, and Mystique on the other -- no idea where I'll put Nightcrawler when/if I get him).

Mr. P, I laugh out loud every time I see your signature. Just thought I'd let you know.

I have a collection of superheroes on my desk, but right now it looks like they're all fighting against a horrid combination of a giant plastic bag and malaise. Mainly because I haven't set them up yet.

Currently I have a stuffed duck in a raincoat holding a carrot that sings and dances to "Splish Splash" when you press his hand.

It was an Easter gift from my mom.  Still don't know why she got it or what to do with it.

@Fell:  Thanks! Even with the normal hilarity of Spriggan's typos, this one took the cake.  You're a laugh a minute, Sprig!

I have an 18" Godzilla whose hand fires when you press his elbow. I'll match him up against your duck anyday.

I really need to take pictures and post them somewhere. I have the coolest desk in the universe. Between the "Masked Platypus" on my computer monitor to the Simpsons stack dolls (purchased in Moscow) to the Battle Toad, I exudes nerliness.

Yes, as in those battle toads. He's not doing much as it is. mostly just holding his gun backward and pointing in anger vaguely at the ceiling. I ran out of space and other figures for him to interact with. Perhaps I could put him up agains the little bot thing that I have, or combat Jango Fett, who's not doing anything but climbing the cube wall.

I have a few lil' dudes on my desk that I like to play with when nobody is looking (although I would simply deny it).  I have Dexter Jettster, Gimli, and Popeye the Sailor.  They are my Warriors Three, wandering the land far and wide in search of nasties to defeat and vile-tempered old women to help across the street against their will.  Sometimes they are joined by The Maxx (one of the very few Maxx figures I have ever seen, and am lucky enough to own).  Every now and then, they go up against my 18" Alien figure (who even still has his extending tongue).  When they are feeling especially frisky, they chase down my cat and engage her in mortal combat.  They have yet to win.

I have a lot of those little robot thingys. I forget what they were called, Z Bots maybe. They're cool little things. I have/had some TMNT figures, a few Spider-Man figures, one of those is from the latest series from the movie. There's other stuff too I'm sure, just too lazy to actually look through that box of old stuff I have.

You know Gemm, I think *my* robot thingy is a "z-bot" or something like it. That's the term I wanted to use. Were those the little plastic robots that were popular about 7 or 8 years ago?
