One more for you. I'm not sure if what she's talking about regarding teaching them to read applies to your mom or not, but your mom might contact her directly through her site (or I can PM you the contact info) and they can have a rousing discussion of it.
I have a list of hi-low publishers at http://www.resourceroom.net/older/hilow_sources.asp tho' I've found a couple more & need to update it. Â It's also worth backing up the directory to http://www.resourceroom.net/older/index.asp for more info about teaching older students.
Is there some way she could get some training in actually teaching these students to read? Â Because the sad truth is, practice at their level rarely raises that level. Â Honest. Â The other infuriating truth is that *teaching* at their level can raise that level. Â Honest. Â The frustrating truth is that generally schools aren't set up to provide that instruction (which I'm sure I don't need to convince anybody).
If there's one thing I'd like to pass on to her from a different spot in the trenches: Â most of the students (and their teachers) overestimate their independent reading ability.
There's a ton of stuff on my site for her population under "reading comprehension" if she'd like to browse, too :-)
