Title: Superman Returns
Post by: Spriggan on September 24, 2005, 05:31:19 AM
Thought we had a thread for this movie but according to the search we've only discussed it in other threads.

Anyway I've mentioned before how much the guy playing Superman looks like Christopher Reeve and we've talked about concerns of Kevin Spacey as Luthor, well IGN has a pic of him and he looks enough like Hackman to keep that "it's a sequel to the first two movies" vibe.

It's actually Spacey's acting that worries me more. He can be a good actor, but often his acting is just wierd.

Who's playing Lois Lane? Or is she not going to be in this movie (I'm not sure where the story is being picked up.)

I have to say that my favorite Superman was the TV show some years back--"Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman." And not because of Dean Cain (though he was good-looking)--but because of the character of Clark Kent. I wanted to hit Lois Lane for being so stupid and not falling head over heels for the nicest, most compassionate guy ever. But I still liked Terri Hatcher in that role--you loved and hated Lois at the same time, which I think you're supposed to.

Kate Bosworth is playing Lois Lane. I believe the following set of emoticons expresses me reaction to this:  ??? :-/ :( :'( >:(

Also, girls never fall for nice guys. :P

Stupid girls.

I've always wanted a nice guy. I just wonder where they all are hiding. Who cares about Superman--where's my Clark Kent?

Ouch EUOL. Ouch.

Well, if she is saying that EUOL was too much Superman and not enough Clark Kent, I don't know if that is too bad a statement. Wierd, but not necessarily bad.

But Superman is a pretty nice guy too. Seeing as how she apparently is still looking for one, I don't think she was saying that either.

I'm just putting in a plug for nice guys. Girls who like jerks are stupid and deserve to end up with them.

Well, maybe that is a little harsh. Most guys seem to think that when a girl says "He's a nice guy" she is saying that she is not interested. But see, when I say that, it is the highest compliment. How a guy treats people around him has always been a determining factor for me whether he is quality or not.

That's all I'm saying. I don't need a superhero--just someone real. And Clark Kent in The New Adventures of Superman was like my ideal guy--or at least the true love of my teenage years.  ;D

See, they think that because it's largely true.

And don't say "nice," because it will be misinterpreted. Say "kind," "caring," or even "considerate." All of which are much more descriptive and don't have the negative connotation.
the word "nice" (at least when describing a man) tends to mean "I don't hate him but I can't think of anything particularly good about him. Also, he's not attractive physically."

Ya saying a guy is "Nice" is like saying a girl has a "Sweet Spirit".

Who cares about Clark Kent, I want a Gilbert Blythe. Who wouldn't want a man who would love you despite years of declaring it would never work?

... On second thought, I think I'd rather have a smart, kind reporter who just happens to be Superman in a secret life. Hometown boy and sophisticated city boy wrapped in one.

He may have been a jerk in the comic books. Never read 'em. I'm talking about the TV show a couple years back--that Clark Kent was compassionate, intelligent, and sincere--not something you find every day. He was a bit of a geek, too, which I always find strangely endearing.

But enough about my dream guy. Blah blah blah. I just wanted to clarify which Clark Kent I was talking about.

And you're right, e, about the negative connotation for "nice." I'll try to use more descriptive synonyms.  ;)

He wasn't really a jerk in the comic books. There were just a huge number of absurd and horribly, horribly written comic books between 1950 and 1990. Not that comics are free of that today, but it does happen less often, as comic creators have gotten a better grip of their own genre's conventions and what the fans actually *want* to see.

And I'm with Spriggan. I didn't think Superman was being a jerk at all! What I meant by "that's sad" is that it was sad if that was the actual conflict of the issue. (They must have been really stretching to make that the plot.) And like Jeffe said--why couldn't Lois say "I don't"? Grow a backbone, woman! And it's sad to think that in the next issue Superman and Lois will be back together again. Why would Superman want such a superficial and wishy-washy girl? Bimbo.

This is just the impression I am getting from the cover, though. I don't know what went on in the actual comic. But that isn't exactly a grabbing cover to me. Especially with Lois being so stupid and helpless. Besides--why would you agree to marry a man who wears a hood without seeing what was underneath first? Common sense.

Superman was often made to look much more like a jerk ont he cover than he ever was in the actual story. The cover was generally related to the story, but promised a hook that was never delivered.

As opposed to todays covers, which are just places to put the names of the actors/authors in really huge font and maybe stick some random boring picture in.

I heard a black stand-up comic say once that it doesn't matter what rich white people name their kids, because they will never have to put it on a name tag at Kinkos.

And maybe they have expensive private schools for kids with weird names so they don't get teased.

I'm with e on that. It "teases" in all the right ways. I felt like it had this solemn tone and sense of wonder to it, which is cool. I'm sick of the "shock and awe" teasers that try way too hard to make their point. So I liked this minimalist, solemn sort of approach. I can't wait to see more!  :D

Superman's name on his home planet of Krypton, Kal-El, bares a strong resemblance to the Hebrew transliteration meaning "all that God is" .

Yeah, I think that was husband's favorite part about seeing HP4. He's been frustrated because they keep saying they're going to make a superman movie, but then they don't. So now he knows it'll be coming out.

I thought one thing was interesting. I am not an avid fan of superman; I like superman, but I've never been a comics buff and I didn't watch "hero" cartoons much as a kid (I little spiderman, a little batman, but that's all) and so I don't know how Jor-el's character is traditionally portrayed, but I thought it was interesting that his character is exactly opposite of what we've seen in Smallville--that he wants Kal-el to help the human race and be good, where as in Smallville, Jor-el wants him to rule over the human race and kill them if he has to. So anyway, interesting.

From what my way-too-into-Superman friend has told me, Jor-El isn't supposed to be a complete jerk like they portray him in "Smallville".  (Personally, I don't care - I watch "Smallville" for Michael Rosenbaum *drools*.)

As for Kal-El Coppola ... he'll be at the therapist with Apple Paltrow and Phinnaeus (however the heck you spell it) Roberts (seriously ... Phinnaeus?  What was Julia Roberts thinking??), and Audio Science.  *resists hijacking thread with astonishment over what celebrities shackle their kids with*

Either way, I'm sure I'll be going to the movie ... but that costume is something else.  And not "something else" in a good way.

Clark only thought at first that Jor-El wanted him to conquor the world because he misread the message.  They only do dumb stuff like that to try suprising people who already know the story I suppose.
