It occurs to me that if AS holds to meeting on Wednesday nights (Abridge Speculist Time, which roughly corresponds to GMT -5), then the next meeting time would be a week from tomorrow, since Dec 1 is a wednesday.
So... Speculists, speak! Are we changing the schedule? or is that good for you? My friend with a massive novel will be joining us too, so we'll always have material to look over.
Need input!
-
Is that the same as the normal meeting time? I'll be on dialup then, and in holidays, so I can certainly manage to come. Can't be sure after that though - it will really depend on what my schedule looks like next semester in terms of work and classes and social engagements.
-
That works for me, at least until I go home for Christmas. I don't really have a connection at home. Not sure yet exactly when I'll be back from break, but classes next semester are Tues. and Wed., so Wed. night might not be so great for prep. time next semester.
-
ok, i'm planning for Wednesdays at the same AS time, same AS channel for December. We may not meet much at the end of hte month, but we'll take it as it comes. We can decide on a new time come January once everyone falls back into a routine.
-
I won't fall back into routine until March. Or more precisely, I'll shift routines at January, and again at March,.
-
we can renegotiate schedules both times then. No biggie to me. Just so we do it in time to account for it.
-
I just sent out an email on this. This week's reading will be from cindie, our new Speculist. Everyone be nice and give her good advice.
-
12 hours till the meeting folks.
-
Um, I never got anything to read. Should I have?
-
yeah. From Cindie. I've got a copy here I'll forward.
-
this is supposed to be happening, like,... right now. Any of you joining us?
-
Err, hmm. I never got sent anything, and my Internet is pretty sketchy right now. I never expected 40 minute timeouts.
-
ok, i just realized, she sent it to me, and not anyone else. I'll forward it and we'll do it next week
-
Whew, because I totally forgot.
But I'll be there next week.
-
SE, what happened to you? I just told her a few final things after you didn't come back for 10 or 15 minutes. Who's sending out for next week?
-
My internet connection dropped and still hasn't resumed. It's not on my end. I've restarted all computers on the network, the hub, and the cable modem. I'm blaming Cox. I didn't call them last night because it was late. But since my connection's still down, I'm calling in a few minutes.
-
hrm... according to this page (http://usercenter.cox.net/rsuite/sdcuser/asp/showContent.jsp?sublevel=yes&frameurl=http://support.cox.net/nss/index.jsp) the network was scheduled for maintenance from 2am to 8am this morning. Which makes me wonder why I lost connectivity at 9:30pm last night.
-
Okay, the big paper is due on Thursday, so I really don't think that I'll be in any position to do writing group this week. I leave for home next week, where I have pretty much no internet connection. So I think I'm pretty much out for the rest of the year at least. To be honest, it's not really working for me while I'm in school at all--I'm not writing anymore, and much as I love to give others feedback, I'm not a fully functioning member of the group when I'm not also writing myself. Perhaps I should just drop out till I graduate.
-
yeah, well, RotK EE is out today. That's pretty much what I"ll be doing from 8 till midnight.
-
Don't drop out! I wasn't really writting before NaNo. I think you should stay in.
Besides, I like talking to you.
-
I can still talk to you if I'm not in writing group. We'll have to see how the semester goes. I'm going to try to write some in the next few weeks before class starts again, as well.
-
I know, but this would be scheduled. ;)
-
ok, so... tonight's probably not good, but how's next week? January 5th?
-
I'll be laying over in Chicago for the night, so not good for me.
-
So, writing groupers, are we defunct? Even if we are, I have a question. Does anyone have a favorite chapter of what we workshopped of Black Bull? Can anybody even remember back that far? I need a sample of my work that's less than 20 pages. So far it seems like chapters 2 and 3 would be best, but perhaps the climbing of the Giant's Staircase would be interesting, too. Anyone have an opinion?
-
Oh, and I have Wed. nights back again, so if we wanted to meet tomorrow night, we could.
EDIT: And if Wed. doesn't work so well anymore, we could pick another night.
-
I can't remember, but I think that's mostly do to my hiatus while moving, etc.
I'd like to start up WG again, but Mathias is being extremely fussy lately which is sabatoging my attempts to clean up one of the 3 chapters I wrote for NANOWRIMO so that I can submit it. I wish I could be more helpful. :(
-
How about my other question, though. Do you remember enough of my story to say, "This was my favorite part"?
-
I'm all for restarting the group. I haven't written since I did NaNo, and I know that NaNo needs a lot of changes first. I've just been too busy to write much, with job search, etc.
I can meet for an hour though. Tonight might be tough, since I'll have my three kids PLUS my brother-in-law to watch and I'm not sure when that will all be done. I guess 9ish would do. If they're not back then, someone's in for it.
-
That what I meant with "I can't remember." And I don't know that I've read everything yet (due to no connection after moving).
When do you need to know? I can't promise to reread them today, but I think I could by the end of the week.
9 ASST (counts on her fingers) means 6 for me, which works as long as I get dinner ready ahead of time. I figured out how to get Trillian 3.0 to work with IRC (just needed to load a plugin) when my husband switch to XP on this machine, so I will be there.
-
This is for an MFA in writing for children application, so I'm just wondering what chapter or two appears to be the strongest. I'm not going to revise heavily, just go over them so that they look and sound good. Perhaps I should dig up an old short story, but this is my most recent work, so I figured it'd be the best representation of where I'm at now. Or I could grab a couple pages of my nonfiction writing for Electrical Apparatus, but I have a feeling it wouldn't be nearly as interesting.
I'll be there tonight. I'll email everybody the whole file, if you wanted to glance over it and remind yourself what happened, in case you don't have the files still. I don't need close reading or even not-close reading, just a general idea of where you think it's strongest, so I can concentrate on making it a little bit stronger for my sample. It just has to be under 20 pages, so that's why I'm thinking one or two chapters--more likely just one.
-
Oh, and should Fell still be on our email list? I thought he was going to EUOL's writing group now.
-
Okay, I'm going to be revising my submission and sending it out today. I'm posting this to see if there is anyone beside Saint and Stacer who want to see my submission.
MsFish, if you see this, please consider this as a personal invitation to the Abridged Speculists meetings.
-
Hmm, are we still on for tonight?
I'm getting nervous.
-
yes'm. we meetin'
-
Um... I forgot. I made plans for tonight. But wait--9 ASST is 7 here, so ...
No, sorry. We're meeting at 6:30 for dinner, so there's no way I'd be around for 7:00. :-/ Sorry.
-
MsFish, if you see this, please consider this as a personal invitation to the Abridged Speculists meetings.
Hmm. Just saw this. Thanks for the invite! What exactly does this entail? I might be interested....
-
it entails reading whatever's being submitted and then showing up for the chats to talk about it.
-
Yes, but how often do people submit? How much do they submit? Where do you chat?
-
chats are held in #speculists on the undernet (let me know if you need help connecting to IRC). they are at 9pm ASST (which is Eastern) each thursday. That means 7pm if you're in Utah.
at the end of the session we find out if someone has something to submit. If not, we wait till someone announces they have something.
-
Well :P on you then, stacer.
/me pouts
I'll email you the questions I was planning on asking tonight.
MsFish, I went ahead and emailed you my submission. Hopefully my writing won't scare you away. :-/
-
How long are the meetings? Because I'd love to participate, but I have TLE at 7:30 on thursdays. And I have absolutely no idea what IRC is... ;D Forgive my ignorance, please.
-
Meeting length varies, but is usually about an hour, hour and a half. The time is changeable. I think the only reason that it's on Thursday today is that Stacer was going to be on a plane yesterday.
-
Well, technically I was at dinner by that time yesterday, but yes. I'm flexible. And I'm really sorry MoD. (Think Gilbert Blythe with the long O.) Bad planning. It's one of those things that plan a couple things at the same time and don't realize it. I'd planned that last week sometime, probably about the same time we were planning the next AS. :/
I will read and answer questions ASAP. Probably during a "break" tomorrow instead of doing my paper or homework. I have an 8-12 page paper due Tuesday, in "publishable condition," and I haven't even started thinking about it yet. I had thought that it was a 4-5 page essay, which I can rip off really easily. Then Tuesday I looked at it again...
I think I'm just going to have to accept that YA is not my most favorite class and I'm just not going to do as well in it. If I can't get into the literature, I'm not going to be as passionate about the project.
-
Fish, I'll hop on AIM sometime soon and help you get connected, show you how to do it. We can move back to Wednesday since Thurs are bad.
-
MsFish, is it okay if I send you my questions too, since you already have the prologue?
Stacer, don't stress about the questions because I'm exactly the same kind of person and have missed a few AS mtgs for the same reason. Good luck on the paper. :)
-
Sure, go ahead and send em to me. I can't promise when I'll get to it, cause I'm dealing with a lot of crap right now, but I'll try.
-
Okay, this is a roll-call to let me know if anyone thinks they are going to be able to make it on Wednesday at 9 ASST. If it's only going to be one person, I don't think I'll worry about editing the next chapter.
Saint, with your work on the webcomic, do you think your going to to be submitting anything to AS anytime soon? I'm certain that I will not be able to submit every week.
-
I can do Wednesday, though I still don't know what IRC is. :)
-
Yeah, well, I haven't seen you on AIM now, have I?
-
Considering the amoung of chatting I've been doing, I don't see how that could possibly be my fault.
-
MsFish, I've sent the questions.
-
Okay. I'll try to get to it. ;D
-
well, send a message to my AIM. It's always connected.
-
I don't see that you're on...
-
hrm... maybe the computer had to be restarted. I'll be home before 5:30. Be on then.
-
Yes, sir.
*Fish salutes.
-
I can be there. I won't be submitting for this week, though. Been way too busy last weekend, and I have a paper due tomorrow, and a presentation in my Wed. class, and I'm starting my new job on Wed. morning.
Or are we just going with the prologue and your questions? Because I can go over that before Wed. night, right after class. No problem.
-
Um, so, my roommate who just broke up with her fiance and moved out last week asked me to have dinner with her wednesday. And since we couldn't get me hooked up to the IRC today I said yes...
*Fish hides under her chair
-
well, I already talked with MoD about her proglogue, so if nothing new is submitted, I was going to go to bed early tomorrow anyway. I think we can hook you up with a web based chat, Fish. We'll try for next week.
-
Okay, so for next Wednesday I'll plan to have Chapter One ready.
Sorry about this week, but I ended up not having much computer time on Tuesday and Wednesday because my husband has been home.
-
I don't think any of us planned on this week. But I'll be there next week. My work schedule looks to be regularly Thurs. nights. I'm thinking of going to take a salsa or ballroom dance class at the community center down the street; I'm thinking that'll be Tuesdays, if it happens, so Wed. will still be the best day.
-
Okay, Wed is the only day we can have MsFish due to TLE, so that's great.
Mmm . . . salsa. (I know you meant a dance class, but that was the first thing that popped in my mind.)
-
I have much shame. . . .
I meant to send out Chapter One on Monday, but I shirked and here it is Wednesday, which is too late to send something out for writing group and I apologize profusely.
And Chapter One sucks. :'(
/me feels sorry for herself
-
sucky stories are what the writing group is here for.
-
Just so you know, I got assigned to the family history center tonight. Just found out this morning. I'm not supposed to be assigned, as it's open 6-9 and I get out of class at 6:30. I just got here, and it's nearly 8. But I won't be home by 9, and they cut off our wireless access here in the church. Apparently we're not supposed to have one. :(
I'll get home as quickly as I can and get online as quickly as I can, if you're going to be around. Sorry about that.
-
That's what I explain to myself in a nice, reasonable tone of voice, but I still forget and become wrapped up in myself and getting things irreproachable now.
Sorry about dropping the ball guys.
-
Seeing as I'm (generally) new, I'm going to ask a few stupid questions:
1. Is this group one that meets in person (presumably in UT), or one that meets online?
2. If online, how do I join up?
3. What is the ultimate question?
Thank you for tolerating my rampant outburst of newbiety.
-
1) yes
2) by paying SE a monthly membership fee of $9.95
3) Taco?
-
1) online
2) I accept money, but if you can conect to IRC, Undernet, channel #speculists when we actually have a meeting, there's no real fee
3) "What size underwear do you wear?"
-
I've never actually used IRC before. I'm using Gaim, which I think might be able to handle IRC. How would I go about doing this? Any kind soul want to get on AIM and explain the process to me?
Errr, okay. So when do you "actually have a meeting"?
-
Yes, yes. When?
-
When someone submits something.
/me looks at MsFish and JadeKnight hopefully
-
How does one submit something?
-
Ah, yes, you would need our email addresses, no? You can email me at stacer 11 AT hotmail DOT com (no spaces) and I'll forward everyone else's email addresses to you.
-
Okay, I sent you the email and await enlightenment. =]
-
Stacy, you have my email?
Oh, I guess there's the Paul one. That would work.
You know, Jelly Belly might want to get in on this. I'm still not sure if I have time right now...but the writing group I had with her sorta fell apart... You looking at this Jelly?
-
Actually, MsFish, I don't know if I do have your email.
-
ok, I have a few things to say. The mailing list is quite long and I'll be trimming it. There are people who have no intention of coming and haven't given comments, and I don't want to be emailing stuff out to people we aren't in contact with.
To that end, I'm making a new list. So far as I understand, these are the people who should be included:
(me)
Stacer
MoD
JadeKnight
MsFish
If you want in and I haven't named you, post to this thread to that effect.
One more thing. We've already said we'll do JK's story. I'm cool with that. But I want to propose a new requirement for submissions. Part of why the list is bloated is that people submit their story, get comments, then never come back. This is supposed to be a reciprocal arrangement. Thus I want to suggest that before you can submit something, you have to give comments on at least three stories (or two full weeks of meetings) before anyone else can submit. I'm tired of people coming once and never again. Like I said, we already told JK we'd do his, so I'm fine with that. No problem. But in the future I want to impose this rule. What do the other speculists think?
-
I'd like to rejoin the group eventually, but unfortunately I'm far too busy right now.
Second semester should be a lot easier than the first without Field Experience, thankfully.
-
I agree on the reading three stories thing. Or, with it being so small, perhaps reading two, if we have a low submission rate. Also, just so you know, I have three more weeks of class. That means that if I get the job in Seattle, I'll probably be out of touch for a couple weeks, then on track for writing more regularly, and if I don't get the job, I'll be ready to write more regularly right away.
-
as you know, I'm on a bad writing schedule too. I *hope* that will change in a week or so. But I've really no idea.
-
I know I've been waffleing, but I don't think I can do this right now. I've just completely spaced my in-person writing group today, and if I can't handle remembering that, there's really no point in me trying to remember this too. I suck.
-
I think that proposed rule is fair, and you don't have to give me preferential treatment, even though if we've nothing else to discuss (at the moment), I'd gladly submit my story.
So am I going to be getting an email sometime, or how do we do this?
-
if you sent me an email, it was lost in the spam. send me another with "Abridged Speculists" in the subject line.
-
I just sent you two, the 2nd has "Abridged Speculists" in the subject line.
-
MsFish you do not suck.
Silly girl-child, I do things like that all the time. This group is very forgiving. We'll miss you and hope you can join up soon.
The rule sounds good to me e.
Why the name change, btw?
-
ok, we have a four person group then. That's enough for me. I will send the email tonight
-
I'm working on my draft, but I may not have it ready in time for you all to read for tomorrow. Perhaps for next week? That way it will have the benefit of my classmates' feedback from tomorrow, too.
-
i'm fine with that. I'm unlikely to be able to get connected tonight.
-
Sounds good to me.
-
I've not been around the boards lately, but I haven't gotten any emails in a long while. Is anything up these days?
-
oh uhm. Well, Ihave a chapter to send out. Have you read the first 16 of my manuscript? It's a hard one to share with people new to the group, because not only has the plot progressed so far, but much of what is in their originally has changed a lot. If'n ya want, I'll send it to ya, then we can do chapter 17 next week.
-
Yeah, I'm ready to start again. I've been meaning to start writing again.
-
So I'm not sure I know what we're doing. Am I sending out chapter 17? and if so, JadeKnight, do you want me to send the entire manuscript?
-
Yeah, we're doing whatever's next for you. But don't think I'll read it by tonight if you're just sending it out now. We're finishing up my coworker's game tonight, so I'll be at work till 6 PST, which is when we start, isn't it?
-
yeah, I didn't think it would happen tonight. Besides, I don't know if JK wants to read it all or not.
-
Sure, send me the whole manuscript. How long is it?
I'll make sure I have it read by next week.
-
the first 16 chapters are 142 pages in TNR 12 pt. (~70k words).
I don't have chapter 17 with me, but I think it's 6 pages. I'll send you the first 16 now, send chap 17 to everyone tonight, and we can meet next wednesday?
-
Yes, except that I won't be home by six. We're finishing up the game we've been playing the last two weeks (Wed. works better than Friday because of the summer hours thing, some people being gone). So we've been playing 4-6, which means yesterday I didn't get home till 7. We can either meet at 6 my time, 9 ASST, on MSN, while I'm still at work (which I'd rather not do, honestly), or meet at 7 once I get home, but that leaves SE up rather late.
-
I can tough it out if that's better for everyone else.
-
I don't think it matters when we meet so much to me at this point.
I have no clue what our point of reference is. I'm currently on PST.
-
AST (Abridged Speculists Time) has traditionally been Eastern, because three of the original four were TWG-Easters. BUt Gemm doesn't come anymore and Stacy moved west. So with three of you on the Left Coast, I suppose that we should make AST Pacific time. *sigh*. SO we're looking ~7pm AST right now.
-
Or, I could rejoin and we could make is OZ time.
-
No. That won't happen.
-
I vote ASST stays EST. 1) Because it's less confusing if it doesn't change, and 2) Because generally it is SE that keeps the group going, therefore it should stay his timezone.
Maybe it should be SEST? ;)
-
Well, I'm fine, really, with whatever time you guys want. But I need to know what time that will be.
-
I just sent out chapter 17 for tomorrow night. Sorry I took so long to get to it. I kept forgetting to take it to work.
Anyway, tomorrow at 10, AST, which is currently easter. Which means 7pm for you left coasters.
-
email to Izzy bounced. If you have her updated email, please forward it to her. I may not be at work much longer.
and speaking of bouncing, Jade, that email with the mp3 bounced too. Sorry.
-
Weird. I received the email with the mp3.
-
very odd. Well, as long as you got it. Like it?
-
hmm...Not only am I still on the list, my old spam email is still on the list.
-
That email addy still works, you just forgot the x.
So, if you still want to send to yahoo, feel free, but it's now my spam account and I am using dreamon27x AT gmail DOT com.
Gmail is love.
I am planning on reading it, but I probably won't have it finished in time for group tonight. Okay if I still hang out?
-
Well, here's a problem. I'm still unpacking, and what with going to Chicago this weekend, I really need as much time doing that before Thursday night as possible. Meaning, tonight. I also haven't read--there was just no time last night, what with other things I had going on, and work, and all.
Sorry, it's been a crazy time, now complicated by deadlines for work that I have to meet, for which I have a lot of reading to do tonight, on top of unpacking.
Plus, my visiting teacher is supposed to be here any minute now. And then someone else is coming over later to talk some more. So it's an absolutely crazy night and I can't come to writing group, sorry. I keep thinking things will quiet down, but it's just been dragging out so long.
-
Well, I'm around, at any rate.
-
Well a couple things
MoD, I'll fire it off to you tomorrow
ALso, I sent out chapter 17. Well, half of it. The other half hasn't been written. I was SUPPOSED to have sent out chapter 16. So since JK is the only one who read anyway (some people through no fault of their own) and I sent out the wrong bit, let's just reschedule.
Is anyone against tuesdays or thursdays?
-
I've got it. Jade & stacer sent it to me.
I'm all for Tuesday or Thursday. Wednesdays aren't good for me any more since my husband was called to be the Elder's Quorum secretary, and they do their visits on Wednesday night.
Thursday is best.
-
I'm generally available, but I'm going on 2 vacations for the rest of summer starting in like a week and a half. So this week is the last chance I'll have to do anything for a while.
-
I'm trying to think about what I have going, and I think Tues. would be better. Thursdays are out--usually have something going for church that night. Wed. is still relatively okay. Thing is, I'm just very swamped right now in my life with all these things going on, so I'm not going to be very reliable for a while, I'm afraid.
-
can we shoot for tuesday, 9 AST?
-
I can't. I'll be flying back that day from Chicago, won't be back to Seattle till about 8pm, and not home till about 9. And I won't have internet access this weekend.
-
ok, so what's the plan on meeting time? Tuesday? Thursday? skipping this week?
-
um hey.. jus wanted to know if i could .. erm .. join? please feel free to contact me re email :)
regardesss.....
-
maisie and I know each other from IRC. I'll vouch for her. She does NaNoWriMo and she has a sample of one on the #Writers web site.
-
As far as I'm concerned (not that I have the last vote), the more the merrier. Welcomes to Maisie.
This week isn't looking good for me. Our hometeacher scheduled to come tonight and since he hasn't been by for like 9 months, we sort of jumped at the chance. Tomorrow is Steve's night to go out with the EQP and hence my night to put Mathias to bed by myself. Thursday I need to go visiting teaching at 7, so I could at around 10 ASST (6 PST). Does that work for you stacer? anyone else?
-
thursday's fine with me. JK? Stacy? Maisie?
-
I think Thursday at 6 will be fine.
-
Okay, as you can probably guess--this has been coming on for a while now--I really just can't do writing group right now. I won't be home by six, and even if I did get home by then, I won't have read. I have a huge deadline on an edit tomorrow. My job is just really demanding right now, and with all the other stuff I've got going on at home and all the people I've promised to do things and not been able to follow through on, I just can't commit to writing group right now.
Sorry. I'd like to read everyone's work eventually, but right now I just really can't.
-
:'(
-
um what time is that greenwich mean time - london?
-
AST is -5 GMT. We're looking at 9pm AST next week.
So if you can't do 2am, then we're looking at me, JK, and MoD, right?
man, we need some contributors.
-
How do you guys meet?
-
IRC
I'll be there, but I thought JK was going to on vacation?
-
well, this is getting disappointing.
I need at least two commenters. just my thing.
-
Hi all :)
Maisie has pointed me in your direction, apparently she has mentioned me to you good people. I'm a mathematician/software engineer, so not sure how much use I am to you, but please feel free to mail me :)
Mike
-
well im exhausted now but if anyone wants a comment or two .. you can email me at [email protected] and i will do my best.. :)
-
SE, if you want, you can email me your piece, and I will email you back.
-
Major apologies. Life got busy, with two siblings showing up in town this week (one just off his mission - first time the family's been together for 2 years), and us leaving for vacation come Tuesday, and my Dad in town last night for a MoTab concert (he's in the choir) and everything...
And I forgot to check the board. If you want I'll read ch16 and get back to you when I'm in town again in two weeks, Saint E.
Sorry about this all, really.
In other news, I think a few of you might be glad to hear we've shelved the Orcs in our world for a more original enemy sort. At least, we think they're original.
I still haven't figured out if I want to do more with the Dark Elf theme with Talyon's Quest, or cut the Elf references out of the story and gloss over that part. Elves aren't vanishing from the world anytime soon, however.
-
well, if I'm going to just get email comments, I'm just going to finish the draft first.
so you'll hear from me on that in a while.
-
So, how could I get involved in this writing group? I'm in charge of my own writing group, but I'm interested in reading new things, as well as hearing new opinions.
-
well, we'd have to arrange meetings again, and make sure we're gettings submissions regularly. I think we have enough people, but we may need to wait until end of summer for JK to be back into things. What about it folks, who still wants (and CAN commit to) a weekly AS meeting?
-
I'd still like to do it.
-
I'm back for this week. Just in case we have a meeting this week. Not likely, I know...
But I'm here for now.
-
Okay, I'm back for (relative) good now. FYI.
So I can meet whenever the group in general can.
Out of curiosity... do we do poetry in this group, too, or just fiction?
-
well, that makes you , me, and MoD, by my count. If we all three show up, that's enough for me. Was anyone else interested in joining?
(edit: I looked back, looks like Reghiena (sp?) was interested too. Do you still check this thread?)
So when do we want to do this?
Poetry's just fine, I should think. We exist to help each other write and improve that writing. If one chooses to write poetry, I have no problem reading it. Just remember that as far as rhythm and meter go, I'm the whitest white boy ever. I can count syllables, but stresses are a bit beyond me for some reason (not for lack of trying).
-
I'm generally good whenever. Give me a tentative time, and I'll tell you if there are any conflicts.
-
Ok, I finally remembered to talk to MoD. We're looking at Tuesday at 9 AST (That's eastern for you left coasters). so, are we good to go? If so I'm sending out some chapters for The Heir of Ungrith.
-
Next week is Cabin Week for us (we have a cabin up at Lake Tahoe for the week). There's no internet access there, and I'll probably be up there.
I might be in town, though.
-
I'm interested, but once fall semester starts up, I'm going to be super busy. If you don't mind me coming for only one week, I should be fine for Aug. 23.
Some semantics questions though - how do submissions work? Where/how do we meet? How are the stories critiqued? Do we get them before hand or read them in the meeting?
I think that covers it. If I have any more questions, I'll let you know.
-
how do submissions work?
Submisisons are passed out via email. When that breaks down, they can usually be put online somewhere.
Where/how do we meet?
We meet online, since I'm an east coaster, MoD is a left-coaster, and the rest of you'se are somewhere in the middle. Time is usually given as AST (Abridge Speculist Time) which has traditionally been corellated to Eastern. (originally most of the participants were east-coasters). If you are familiar with IRC, connect to the UnderNet (eu.undernet.org works) and join #speculists. If none of that last sentence made any sense, then go to http://writer.herbertlives.com/modules/xpjirc/ let it connect, then type (without the quotes) "/join #speculists" That'll get you there.
How are the stories critiqued
The author controls the conversation. Usually by asking for general impressions and then asking specific questions about passages or ideas. There's always an opportunity for the reader to make mention of anything else they have noticed and for the writer to get feedback on specific issues.
Do we get them before hand or read them in the meeting?
Before hand. usually at least three or four days. Reading them at the meeting is impractical, since we're online.
Now here's the issue. I have a whole manuscript to blow through. Obviously a 53000 word manuscript is not something that can be handled in one session. I'd kind of like the same group all the way through. Since JK won't be there next week, I'd rather not start with mine unless Reigheena changes her mind and will meet with us after the semester starts. I'd rather wait till he can be in on the first chapter.
This does not mean I don't want ot meet next week. But does anyone else have something they want to submit?
-
I'd submit some poetry, but the whole problem is that I wont be there next week. =þ
-
So, any chance we can start this back up anytime soon?
-
uhm... yeah. Who's in, and when are they available? Weekday evenings, except Monday, at about 8:30 (eastern) is best for me
-
I might be interested in joining, although I don't have anything ready for others to read, yet. I would be happy to review others' writing, though.
Most evenings are fine, although I prefer after 7pm (MST), when my kids are in bed, otherwise I'll be constantly interrupted. Or, if that's too late for EST, I can just email comments to people.
-
that would be 9 EST, which is the latest I'd like to start, but I can start then.
-
I don't have anything ready for others to read, yet.
Well, that's not entirely true. Would it be OK to just have the first chapter of a book to review? (Which would be benefical to make sure I'm starting off on the right foot.) Or would I need to wait until the whole thing is finished?
-
it depends on how committed you are to reading other people's stuff. THe main reason AS died off was because Stacy and I were reading everyone's stuff. They'd meet to discuss their own story, then never show up again. I would really like to avoid that. If there's a good chance you won't show up again, then no. But if you're going to keep coming back, then I'm fine with a chapter at a time.
-
I intend to be committed. I haven't been able to find a writing group where I am, much less one that's sci/fi/fantasy. I do technical writing professionally, so I'm used to reading and reviewing other people's stuff. Plus I was an editor at TLE many moons ago and am realistic about what reviewing fiction entails.
I can reliably meet for reviews/discussions once or twice a month. I really want help with my stuff and am willing to read others'.
-
wow, you're like my female double.
ok, so you, me, JK, for everyother week?
is there a night other people would like best? or can I just randomly say the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month, 9 eastern, 8 central, 7 mountain, and 6 pacific?
We tend to meet on IRC, but if that doesn't work, we can meet on AIM or something. I have a really simple IRC plugin on the web, so it shouldn't require installing anything. but it doesn't matter that much. We just had problems with AIM/MSN before.
If this is what we're doing, let's go ahead and have Nessa send out her chapter. Use the email in my profile. Jade Knight and I should have it read by Tuesday night (it's the fourth tuesday next week) and be ready to give comments. Nessa should be ready with specific questions. Enrollment is still open if someone else wants in, but they should opt in soon, in order to get the material read on time.
Sound good to everyone?
-
Sorry to be a party pooper, but I can't do the 4th Tuesday of each month (book club...I'm hosting the book swap that night). I can do next Wednesday (the 26th). So, how about 2nd Tuesday & 4th Wednesday, 7pm MST? Does that work?
I'll email Chapter 1 today.
I haven't used IRC before, but I'm game (I saw instructions on here somewhere....), but when I email you, that email address I use has an MSN Messenger account, so you can IM if things get hairy.
-
I'll give you a link later today so you can try it. It's easier than downloading. IF the link doesn't work, I wrote a tutorial on connecting for a web site, and I'll point you to that.
-
I'm interested. ;D
Really any time is super because I don't have any other commitments for the time being - other than the NaNo thing in November.
- N
-
Are the first and third Tuesdays better?
And neiana, you're welcome to join us
-
Are the first and third Tuesdays better?
Those work for me.
-
ok, barring any future objections, our next meeting is on Nov. 1, All Saint's Day. If you haven't gotten it yet, tell Nessa how she should get her chapter to it so you can read it on time.
-
Works for me. Can someone forward me the chapter?
-
Um...
Was I mistaken, or did we have a meeting scheduled Tuesday night? Was there a miscommunication somewhere? Did everyone lose interest? Are we still going to do this? I still want to.
-
I just got stupid. Very very sorry. Let's make it up this week then get back on schedule. We need to remind each other the day before and earlier. I've traditionally done it, but I forgots.
-
Well, Nessa said she wanted to chat this evening about the story. I set up an app to automatically connect, but my browser blocks it at home (though the same set up on another site works at my work computer). Anyway, I don't know if it works, but try this link. it'll ask to temporarily install something. You have my guarantee that the file it's installing from my site is safe.
http://www.steamclockworks.com/modules/xpjirc/
-
Sorry. I've gotten all slackerish. I'll try to keep up with this thread more.
-
One week from today is the next meeting. Isn't it SE's turn to send out the reading for this week?
-
er.. yeah. Thanks for reminding me, I'll make it a "to do" today.
-
Sent that out yet, Saint E?
-
crap. No. and I can't till I get home, having lost my flash drive. I will try to do it the instant I get home. (about 98 mins from now)
Correction: It turns out I won't be home till about 120 minutes or so after this edit. Stupid mass transit and no one willing to drop off the car at a more convenient location....
-
The Pigeon has flown the Coop.
and only 40 minutes or so after I thought it would go.
-
Are we still planning on tomorrow? Will anyone else who's read it be joining us?
-
I'm still planning on tomorrow, but I don't know if it will be anyone but us three.
-
So, about how big of a chunk should I send you/have you plan on reading for next time?
-
I don't know how much SE plans on reading, but I can read as much as you'll give me. It's up to you.
-
20 pages is about reasonable, I think. Give or take a dozen. I don't want to be obligated to read half a novel (heaven knows I'm still behind on like three manuscripts I promised to read) in a short time, but I want to have a big enough chunk to give an idea of what I'm reading.
-
I've got an excerpt just shy of 30 pages I'd like to send.
Can you guys handle .wpd (WordPerfect) files, or do I need to convert them for you?
-
A regular text file will do just dandy for me.
-
I need only legibility and page breaks.
-
btw, I forwarded a copy to Izzy (Mistress of Darkness) because she was one of hte most faithful members of AS a while back. She's eager to join us, she just doesn't show up on the forums very often. So you'll have three readers on Tuesday.
-
Cool
-
Tomorrow is the night, folkses.
-
I'm ready with lots of comments! (Watch out Jade!)
-
Um . . . where do I go? :o
And what time? 9 ASST?
-
e? I was wondering what time, myself. My assumption was 9 EST. It still is (or I'll have missed it already!)
-
Gah!!!! I'm so sorry guys. I was there, but my internet connection was on the fritz. Perhaps the 6 inches of snow we got dumped on us yesterday afternoon had something to do with it....
I can email comments to Jade, or we can IM sometime. I would be happy to do either.
-
yeah, email him comments. I figured your connection just pooped.
ANyway, Nessa, you're up.
-
Ok, I'm emailing comments. If you have questions, Jade, let me know.
I'll send out a few chapters of mine in a day or two.
-
Thanks for the comments. You guys were very helpful.
-
So, here's the deal: I came down with food poisoning from last night's Ward Christmas Dinner. I'm flying back to Reno on Tuesday (morning). If I'm feeling okay and not asleep, I'll show up (and I'll try). If not, I'm sorry.
-
Are you thinking the next meeting is December 13th? Because it isn't until the 20th. We had agreed on meeting the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month. You have plenty of time to read and recover. (In that order ;)).
-
Oh, that's right. That's good news for me!
-
Tomorrow is the day! Tuesday, December 20, 7pm MST.
Are we going to do messenger again? Because I can do that or IRC. Unless e wants to help me figure out AIM.
Should I email Izzy?
-
I can edumacate anyone in anything that needs doing. Just let me know what method you want to use..
-
So the plan is to use IM. I can invite everyone to the group starting at 7pm.
If you have issues, let us know.
-
my issue is that I'm retarded!
Sorry!
did you meet last night? If I'm the only one who missed I'll send comments. I had to buy ingredients and bake last night.
-
It was just me and Jade. We chatted. It was helpful. Emailing comments would be great.
-
Next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 3, 2006, at 7pm MST. E will be sending out material for this time around.
Edit: E has sent out the story, so if you haven't got it, email him!
-
Tomorrow is the day, people! We're reviewing E's story. Starting with chapter 6, right? Are we using MSN again?
-
All of the previous post is correct
-
uhm... change of plans. I have tickets to a play at the Folger's Theater tonight.
I'm happy to do this tomorrow or next week, but my wife will kill me if I try to do it tonight.
-
ok, so the schedule's redone for tonight. I'll see y'all.
-
I'm beginning to think that our writing group will always feel haphazard. Changing dates, people missing, etc. *Sigh* At least we're getting something done despite all this.
Anyway, next meeting is slated for Tuesday, January 17th, 7pm MST. Jade is providing content, and should be getting it out to us sometime this week.
-
Tomorrow is the day! If you haven't read Jade's ms, you still have time, since it isn't very long.
-
Is there someone besides SE from whom we can recruit the ninja monkeys? Because we need them to find him....because he flaked the writer's group!
It's hereby rescheduled for Wednesday, January 18, 7pm (Mountain Standard Time) unless something comes up between now and then...
-
Hey, just because I *look* retarded doesn't mean I *am* retarded.
Ok, I was this time. Sorry. Yes, tonight is good. I'll be there, barring ninja monkey interferance.
-
Geez, I completely forgot that I have pack meeting tonight (sometimes I wish I could forget....). I have to go because I'm in charge of the Webelos skit.
Go on without me. I've already sent Jade more comments than he can handle anyway ;D. And he can always email me if he has questions later.
-
So, how did it go?
The next meeting is Tuesday, February 7, at 7pm MST. It's my turn to pass out stuff, right?
Did guitarbabe want to join us? I think she expressed interest...
-
I think it went well. You'd have to ask JK for sure though, he's the one who got raked over the coals. ANd yeah, it is your turn NEssa. Just get it to me a day or two ahead of time.
Guitarbabe sounds like a good candidate for the group to me. I'd be happy to have her in on the disussions. I want to stick with the read twice before you submit rule though. Which means her turn will be on....March 7th. Unless we step up these meetings. I am back in enough of a groove to probably add a third meeting a month to the mix. It'd help us get through the rotation faster.
-
Poor Jade. Was it really that bad? Were any of the comments I sent helpful?
I'll send out chapters this week sometime. I have a little fine tuning to do first.
Three meetings a month...I'm not quite sure yet if I can swing that. Unless people are willing to get written comments from me on the nights I can't be here in person. I might be more willing if I knew I could depend on those nights (instead of the more frequent rescheduling we seem to be experiencing these days). There's too much going on right now I have to do, but by March I could easily do it more often.
In the summer I won't be around at all because of moving and stuff. But that's far enough off not to worry about right now.
-
well, I rescheduled this week because I'm a flak. However, if it's tight, let's just wait a bit.
-
Mañana, mis hermanitos.
-
Um, I thought it was next Tuesday, seeing as how it's the first Tuesday of the month.
However, I am willing to change it to tomorrow if everyone else is ready and willing.
-
See, here I am trying to be responsible and stuff and you tell me I'm wrong.
that makes me feel bad.
-
Well, that's your own fault. But, I am trying to be flexible to do it tomorrow (in regards to your request that we meet more frequently...).
-
Nah, we'll just wait till the pre-approved time. I think it's a bit short notice to change times.
-
Tomorrow is the day. 7pm (MST). We will be using instant messaging with MSN because that's what guitarbabe can use.
-
/me salutes.
Yes'm.
-
What a great meeting! Thanks y'all! You were all very helpful and insightful, giving me great ideas and helping me clarify. I had been despairing lately about the story and now I'm all pumped up. Yay!
Next meeting is February 21st, and it's SE's turn to send out material.
-
OK, here's the deal.
The group is getting bigger. If Shrain joins we will have five people submitting. If we keep going at the current rate of two meetings per month the rotation will just be too slow.
Also, Shrain can't meet at our regularly scheduled time. Is everyone OK with changing times? Give me a list of days/times that would work for you.
Possible solutions:
* Keep it at two meetings a month, but review two stories per meeting (possibly submiting shorter exerpts).
* Meet more often, like once a week, or three days a month. How many times a month are you willing to meet?
Anything else we need to address?
-
I'm back to being able to do once a week. However, I"m tight for times. 9pm is about the time I can do things. It's early enough that I can still get to bed, but late enough that I'm done with the kids by then. moving too far in any direction is a bit rough. Though I'm flexible on days.
I'm also comfortable with the size right now. I've no problem with Shrain joining, but I think we should prioritize meetings for extant members.
-
7pm MST/9pm EST remains a good time for me, too. Let's stick to that.
I can do Tuesdays/Wednesdays/Thursdays. We can try to do it once a week, but I might miss occasionally (but I will always provide comments). My vote is for 3 nights a month.
-
I'm also comfortable with the size right now. I've no problem with Shrain joining, but I think we should prioritize meetings for extant members.
Yes, absolutely.
Since my classes are Tue and Wed and I'm trying to go to FHE on Mondays, I could participate on any other day. Thursday would be best--for Nessa too it looks like. :) I probably can't do 4x a month, but 3x/month should be good to shoot for. 7pm MST/9pm EST should be good. What does everyone else think?
-
Thursday works just fine for me. I'll poke Jade Knight and Izzy when I see 'em next for their opinion
-
Hi guys,
So Thursday is the best night? That looks like the gist of the conversation. I have a writer's group every Thursday at the same time, but I can take turns or something, every other?
ALSO, I can do Wednesdays at seven (that can be made open).
I'm for meeting three times a month or even more is cool.
-
*Sigh* No consensus on the day? I'm trying to avoid Friday or Saturday to keep it open for date night, but we can resort to one of those nights if necessary.
Shrain, what time is your class on Wednesday? Are you home by 9?
-
9 is 9 for me, when I say that. That means 7 in Utah, 6 on West coast
-
Right, Shrain is in Boston, so it's 9EST for her (and SE), 7MST for me.
-
I really need to keep better track of where you all live.
-
Nessa - Salt Lake City (MST)
SE - Virginia (EST)
guitarbabe - Provo (MST)
Jade Knight - Provo (MST)
Izzy - Utah somewhere (MST)
Shrain - Boston (EST)
-
Izzy is in Cali, PST.
-
Oh! See, I don't know everything.
Nessa - Salt Lake City (MST)
SE - Virginia (EST)
guitarbabe - Provo (MST)
Jade Knight - Provo (MST)
Izzy - California somewhere (PST)
Shrain - Boston (EST)
-
Nessa, my classes on Tue and Wed go until 9:45pm... Riding the T, I don't get home until around 10:30 EST. So I couldn't meet at 9 on either night. Rats. :(
Hey, what about MsFish? I know she wasn't in your email about the group members but I noticed her posts to SE. Fish, do you join in the group from time to time? That'd be cool.
-
You could start a second group
I don't know that I'd mind being in two different groups, though I don't know if you'd need me.
-
Oh, come on, e. How in the world could I not want God in my writing group (even if I were to form a second chapter of the Abridge Speculists)?
-
That's a very good question. I'll get back to you when I have an answer
-
Whatever...I'll try to work it in whenever, although Fridays and Saturdays are bad, bad...unless they happen earlier. Saturday afternoon?
Oh, and whoever's turn it is, send me your stuff. I haven't got it yet. And do we know when we're meeting next...oh, oops, that's the big debate. Forget I asked that.
-
Bad news: Thursday is the worst possible day for me to meet this semester; I have class until 7:40, and when I get home I immediately have Happy Pirates practice (an Improv Comedy troupe I've joined).
I'm free most other nights after 7, and I'm generally available during the day.
-
ok, thursday's out then, at least temporarily.
Until we agree on a different time, we'll stick with first and third Tuesdays. I reckon it'll be easier to work out when we can all respond in real-time.
So, next meeting is Feb 21, 9pm eastern (yatta yatta for time changes.).
My manuscript, which I'm sending to guitarbabe in just a few minutes here.
-
Works for me.
In March we could switch to three time a month, like the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Tuesdays?
-
That sounds perfectly excellent
-
Hey, guys, thanks anyway for trying to change the schedule for my benefit. I appreciate it.
I'll just see what I can do about drumming up a second group or finding some local writers in the singles wards here. (Once I get over this flu thing I've got). I might just find a couple SF people among the fiction writers.
-
Okay, Feb 21st. Again, if I don't show up it's because I just had a baby and I haven't caught up with life, the universe and everything else yet.
-
My manuscript, which I'm sending to guitarbabe in just a few minutes here.
Still waiting on my copy, and I want to read it right now!!!
/me pokes SE
EDIT: MoD is a stupidhead who already had the submission, from like months ago.
-
Izzy, if you have the story from the last time we commented on his, he probably sent out the entire thing and you just comment on a few chapters. So you might already have it.
Unless he's changed stuff. Have you, SE?
Edit: Chapters 11-15 are what we're going over, I believe.
-
Yeah, change anything? Is it 11-15?
-
Okay, cool, got it...and the time too! Tuesday it is...
My (wipe forehead), what a debacle (me checking dictionary to make sure that's what I think it means, and then getting bored and chucking it)...
-
I can resend to anyone who wants a resend, though. There haven't been any changes, just planned changes.
-
Wow, this is amazing. I was just pointed to this website tonight at LTUE. My name is Brian McClellan and I'm taking Brandon's class for the second year. I also work with Leading Edge. I'm hoping to find a writing group for Fantasy. It could take decades to read through all this to figure out where you guys are on groups and such, so I figure I'll just ask. Is there an available spot in a currect group or will a new one be formed in the near future? Thanks a lot.
-
AS, I think, is full -- though maybe I'm just throwing my opinion about before consulting my associates. But a second group (http://www.timewastersguide.com/boards/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=writing_group;action=display;num=1139855523) is forming and I'll write you down as interested.
-
AS, I think, is full -- though maybe I'm just throwing my opinion about before consulting my associates.
I will defer to you, O benevolent one.
-
I have no qualms either way.
-
Tomorrow is the day, everyone.
Is Izzy going to be there, or has she had her baby yet?
-
Next meeting: Tuesday, March 7, 7pm (MST). Stephanie has already sent out her chapters, so if you didn't get it, let her know.
I thought last night's meeting went well, but we women ran SE's story in circles. Hopefully he isn't too dizzy.
-
Yeah, I felt a little bad. We're all about romance and stuff...
-
Well it is a love story after a fashion.
-
Yeah, the primary conflict for more than half hte book is a romance, so it's fair.
You didn't make me dizzy, and I have some ideas I need to flesh out on how to fix it. So all is good.
-
March 7th is upon us, people. It's at the usual time and place.
We will now be meeting the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Tuesdays of each month. This means the next meeting is March 14, one week after this meeting. Since the March 14th meeting is Jade's turn, this is a heads-up for him to have his stuff ready to send out as soon after the March 7th meeting as he can. Just wanted to give him time to pull stuff together.
Edit: I will not be able to attend the April 4th meeting (SE's turn) because my daughter's ballet recital is that night. You can either reschedule/skip/or do without me. Whatever everyone decides.
-
Oh, I'm so glad that you reminded us all, Nessa. I'm gonna have to think of some good questions to ask now. Thanks again!
-
Meeting tomorrow night, same time, same place. We'll be going over Jade's short short (2 pages), so if you haven't read it yet, you still have time!
Next week (March 21st): My turn, so I'll be sending out stuff soon (don't worry, I won't send out as much as before).
-
Does anyone have the log for the4 discussion we had on Jan 4 about Chapters 6-10 of The Heir of Ungrith? I can't track it down.
-
Sorry, I don't have it. I just have the 2-21-06 one.
-
Writing group tomorrow, everyone! Same time, same place. We're going over my stuff. If you don't have it (and you should), let me know.
-
Hey, thanks everyone for their comments. I knew the selection had problems and you guys gave me great ideas for fixes. Thanks.
Next up: SE on April 4.
There's a fifth Tuesday in May. Do we want to add it to the schedule?
-
I think I could use the extra week off…
SE, do you know if the chat (you're looking for the log for) was on MSN? If so, I might have it. Did you invite me to the chat?
-
I'm pretty sure it was on MSN. I don't know if you were invited, because I don't have the log :D
-
It's Stephanie's turn to send out stuff to read! Send it out as soon as you can, girl!
-
Okay, I'm just putting some finishing touches on it. We missed ya, btw! :-[
-
Believe me, I would have rather been home chatting with you guys than where I was. It was my daughter's ballet recital, only it was a whole huge production at Kingsbery Hall up at the U of Utah campus (where the parking is abysmal). She spent a total of 3 minutes on stage, while me and my husband sat through an entire ballet for two+ hours filled with people we didn't know. She was in rehersals for part of the day, too, so it was a regular ordeal. I'm just glad it's over and she can just have regular classes again.
-
Well, we're glad to have you back! I seriously can't imagine anything more cute than watching tons of little ballerinas dancing around. I just remember when my younger sisters were in ballet. They were just out of 'toddlerhood,' so they had those cute round tummies, bulging over the tutus.
Okay, so I finally sent out my chapters to you guys. Give me the head's up if you didn't get it or I messed it up somehow. Thanks!
-
OK, Jade is up next for April 18th.
It's been decided that starting May 23 this group will officially be on hiatus until further notice, due to people moving and busy school/work. We may start up again in July. Hopefully. Or we may have a random meeting in the middle there somewhere, if we can get our act together during the summer. Who knows.
-
Reminder: meeting tomorrow, y'all, to go over my submission. Same time, same place.
-
I've read it, but I just moved into Foreign Language Housing, and I think we may have a (mandatory) meeting at 7, so don't count on me showing up. I'm sorry, and I'll try to email you a few comments if I 'm not around.
-
I was going to leave a snotty message to the stinky boys who were a no show (all of them) BUT then I read this thoughtful message and my heart was touched, and I'm sure that Nessa will find forgiveness somewhere in her now cold heart (after experiencing such bitter disappointment) as well.
-
I had a *BABY*
You can call me stinky if you want. But you'll still look like the jerk in the exchange.
-
My husband doesn't do much when it comes to helping me take care of my babies. For #3 he took 3 days off work, including the day #3 was born. Even then, my sister was here to help, so he didn't have much to do. So obviously my perception of a man's availability after his wife gives birth is flawed.
We could have changed the day/time to better suit you. Just Stephanie was there and I was having a hard time with chapter 18 and really need some feedback. So if you have the chance to go over it, please send me comments.
-
I will.
By 8pm I was still thinking of possibly getting there. But I hadn't read it yet. Then I had to put together the second crib and do dishes still.
And I was just so *tired*
-
SE, you're next (May 9). It's the rest of your chapters in the story, isn't it?
-
Indeed yes.
On top of that, I now know that I will not be making any cross-country moves. I will be changing neighborhoods, that is it. Thus I won't be missing more than a week for meetings. So... I'm good to have AS meetings during June/July/August if anyone else is.
-
AS meeting tomorrow (May 9th), to go over SE's chapters. Same time, same place!
Stephanie is next (May 16) and will be the last one until our hiatus is over.
-
This term is actually insanely busy for me. I'd prefer putting meetings off until July. (I'm currently taking 9.5 credits, and that's only because they dropped one of my classes yesterday.)
-
Jade, it's OK if you can't attend, there will still be Steph and myself to comment on SE's.
I don't mind putting meetings off until July. Are you talking early/mid/late July? We'll probably still go through with tonight's meeting since it's the last of SE's novel.
As for Stephanie's next week, it could just be with me and SE, or else at her choice we can put off next week's meeting until later. Whichever she prefers.
-
Oh, I don't care, whatever. Hopefully I'll have some sort of internet over the summer, although I can't be too sure short of library visits.
-
Jade is really busy in school and would like to put off future meetings till late June (his summer term will be less of a strain). Shrain knows not what her internet will be like.
I however, need no hiatus. I'm ready to go whenever.
-
I absolutely need the last week of May and the first week or so of June off. I'm moving and my house/internet will be a disaster.
Maybe we can meet for Steph's story next week without Jade and then meet up again in June, say the 20th, and work on mine (skipping Jade once because he'll be too busy that month).
What say you?
-
sounds good to me
-
Hey, did you call me Shrain? That's a compliment, E!--but it's me who doesn't know what her internet situation will be in the summer. Wish me luck!
-
All you girls...
we used to have, like, 2 girls who came around. ANd they had different real names.
now I have Sarah and Stephanie, and they're both in writing groups. I apologize for confusing which group you're in, but you'll have to understand, it's going to continue to happen.
-
Updated meeting schedule. (http://www.vanessakchristenson.com/writersgroup.htm)
What do you think? Does it work? I switched around the day-off each month, since we probably won't want to meet July 4th. And that works better for me to meet early in August because I'll be out of town at the end of the month. It also allows Jade some time off until his semester isn't so crazy.
-
I like it, except I'm not sure what my internet situation will be like once summer hits. I'm going to the 'village.' And, I might get occasional library visits to check up on internet junk. Although, I might get lucky. I'll know for sure in a month, so I'm sure I'll know before July to tell you!
-
what the heck is the village? Is that some kind of Shyamalan reference?
-
Yup! The place is so small that the newspaper only comes once a week, and it's like Cheers, where everybody knows your name. It's going to be fun.
-
I'll know for sure in a month, so I'm sure I'll know before July to tell you!
Just let me know when you can, so I can update the schedule, if necessary.
-
Yup! The place is so small that the newspaper only comes once a week, and it's like Cheers, where everybody knows your name. It's going to be fun.
You from a small town then?
-
SE, when are you moving? I scheduled (http://www.vanessakchristenson.com/writersgroup.htm) you for the end of the month, but if that's a bad time I should change it.
-
We don't have dates. We don't believe in those things.
-
Haha. I guess I'm just OC that way. I have my life already all scheduled for the week we're moving.
-
we don't even know where we're moving TO. hard to schedule a time without that info.
-
Reminder: meeting tomorrow to go over Stephanie's story.
-
Unfortunately, I wont be able to make it. Alack, alack.
::hoping his GPA doesn't invert this semester::
-
I'm thinking Steph is really happy to have us to masacre her story. Otherwise, she wouldn't have all this fun re-writing to do? ;D
The next meeting isn't until June 20. I'll email you guys the chapters when it gets closer to that time, and send out reminders.
-
Yup, with enemies like these, who needs friends...ur, with friends like these...whatever!
Nah, you didn't massacre it, although sometimes I wish you did. It just needs work. That darn Point of View kills me everytime. I should just keep everything first person, so I don't mess up.
I sure hope I have working internet around June. We'll see!
-
actually, that might be one way to make it easier. Write each scene as first person from the POV character, then go back and change it to 3rd person.
-
So I guess the AS meeting for June 20 to go over my chapters is coming up in a week.
I'll be sending out chapters 19-22 (or so) in the next few days. It's just me, Steph, and SE--is that right? If one of you can't make it, then we'll reschedule. It's not worth it to meet if there's just one other person.
-
I can make it.
-
However, it turns out that Stephanie can't make it, so we're postponing tomorrow's AS meeting.
Here's the updated schedule. (http://www.vanessakchristenson.com/writersgroup.htm)
-
Meeting tomorrow (try #2) to go over my story. Will SE and Stephanie be able to come?
-
I should, yeah.
-
It looks like we're losing Jade, that school is too busy for him to attend anymore.
Do we need to recruit? We're going on 3 active members right now.
-
a group of three is enough for me, actually. I belong to the other, much larger group too. I'm cool if you want to add one or two people too, though.
-
Would it be bad form to recruit one from the other group? (Since they're so big anyway?)
-
I think it would be inappropriate to steal one, yes. There are only 4 or 5 that show up regularly at this point. But I'm sure there's no problem with dual membership (at least I hope not, that's what I do).
-
There's a meeting scheduled for tomorrow--SE's turn. Do you still want to do it?
-
DOH! totally wasn't thinking. We finished draft 1 of Heir of Ungrith, right? How about I break and do a short. Who's going to be there?
-
Yes, we finished draft 1.
Probably just me.
-
Let's put it off for a week until I can get Stephanie targetted with the NMDU then.
Also, I've talked to my sister (acclaimed, award-winning poet) and she may be interested in joining.
-
I am coming forthwith upon the completion of a short story I've been working on for a week or so now. I am wishing to be a part of this meeting that coordinates commentary and other useful belongings.
How do I shot web? er, I mean, how can I become a part of this?
-
SE: It's ok with me! (My prose could use some comments--and a poet would be a good resource).
Gemm: It's OK with me (SE? thoughts?). Usually we meet Tuesday nights (3x a month) at 7pm MST, instant messaging. New people have to attend 2+ times before they can submit (so we don't waste our time comments on people's stuff who won't stick around).
Here's the schedule (http://www.vanessakchristenson.com/writersgroup.htm). (Which, of course, is subject to change if we have new blood join.)
-
What is this mountain time? How do I adjust for eastern seaboard? 2 hours? 1? I usually have to leave for work at 9 pm if I'm walking.
-
If you're on EST it would be 9pm. Hrm. That might be a problem if you have to leave for work. Earlier is hard for me because it's getting into dinnertime/bathtime.
It doesn't look like it will work out. Sorry.
-
Would you hate me too much, SE, if I said I might not be able to attend AS on the 18th? :-[ It turns out I have a double-booking and the easiest thing to change is AS. We can do it next Wednesday or Friday or wait until the next week (the 25th)....or something. Or you can scream and rant (not preferred) until I feel guilty and blow off my new book club group at its first meeting.
-
do they always meet on Tuesdays? Also, it depends on whether Stephanie will be there. My sister already told me she would, but she's having trouble registering on TWG for some reason.
-
Yeah, it's scheduled for a Tuesday and we usually meet on a Tuesday, but I offered to meet another day the same week, if you wanted.
As for Stephanie, I think she's still out of state (http://www.timewastersguide.com/boards/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=guitarbabe;action=display;num=1138835535;start=15). I can hardly get the chick to email me. I think she's busy, at least this week. You'll have to ask her (she hasn't replied much to me, I still haven't gotten comments on my last submission).
-
no, i mean does your book club always meet on Tuesdays?
My wednesdays aren't bad right now. I don't do young mens anymore.
-
Oh. I don't know. Probably. But I don't think it's every month. And I would have scheduled AS differently if I had known their schedule....but I didn't know it until this past Sunday (it's one of those new Enrichment groups, so they aren't particularly organized yet).
Perhaps we can meet either a half hour early, or we can limit the meeting to 30 minutes. In the future, I will know the book group schedule and will schedule AS so they won't interfere with each other.
-
well, we'll try for wednesday then. Let me talk to my seester.
-
my sister has said wednesdays are fine. Let's just move to wednesdays unless someone has a problem with it. (I don't know why my sister is having me tell you this, she's registered and read the thread)
-
Okie Dokie. Updated Schedule. (http://www.vanessakchristenson.com/writersgroup.htm)
-

Gah! So my husband informed me tonight that he's scheduled his home teaching for when? Tuesday night at book club time. And he won't change it because it's apparently the "only" time he can meet with the family this month.
So after all this trouble I'll be home at the normal time. How irritating. Still, we'll keep AS on the new day. He's not scheduling HT during book club next month! (that's for dang sure)
Edit: By the way, when should I be expecting your submission?
-
My first ever message. I'm so excited. I was just wondering what your msn id's were so I could find you guys. Thanks.
-
My second message! Wahoo! Just wanted to let you know that my msn id is kaykeelolo. See you all tomorrow.
-
added you. all our msn ids should be in the email I sent you the other day.
-
I'm kind of new to this instant messaging thing. My ID is [email protected], not kaykeelolo. Sorry...
-
Got it! I've added you.
-
Is anyone there?
-
Next AS meeting is this Wednesday, and since Stephanie is out of town, we'll be going over my submission, instead. I have emailed it, so if you haven't got it, let me know.
-
Just an FYI. I am currently at my in-laws. I forgot that my brother-in-law's fiance was coming in for a surprise visit and we all came in to meet her. I do not project this interfering with my attendance, and I have read the submission. but if I'm late, just wait for me.
-
In the original schedule we were going to skip this next week, but are going to meet on the 2nd, after all. It will be Hannah's turn.
-
We'll be skipping SE for this week. His submission isn't ready. Instead, we'll be going over my chapters. I'll send them out today.
-
OK. A few issues to discuss.
1. Hannah flaked out! I require a detailed commentary of my submitted chapters due by the end of the week. ;)
2. Neiana is submitting for next week. If you don't get the email, let him know.
3. SE will be out of town on the 23rd. I will be out of town on the 30th. We can still have AS scheduled for those days (right now the 30th isn't scheduled) as long as it's ok to the rest that we're missing people. Any preference? Otherwise I'm just going to leave those days completely off the schedule.
What do you think?
-
Reminder: Going over Neiana's submission tomorrow. If you haven't got it yet, email him, he's already sent it out.
Edit: Schedule (http://www.vanessakchristenson.com/writersgroup.htm)has changed. We're skipping the next two weeks then picking up again in September with kaykeelolo.
-
Please disregard my previous message. I just got an email from the other group and they moved the meeting time back to Thursday. Sorry to be a bother...
-
So everything's a go for this Wednesday at the usual time. I got Hannah's submission just fine. Let her know if you didn't get it.
-
SE and I are switching this week. So I sent out this week's submission, and SE will submit next week. If you didn't get my email, let me know.
-
Note the changed schedule (http://www.vanessakchristenson.com/writersgroup.htm). Our meeting day does not change, but now Jeffe has been added to the lineup.
If there are problems, let me know.
-
SE is a punk (those are his words). He didn't submit, so we aren't meeting tonight. We will, however, meet next week and I'm threatening that if he doesn't submit, we'll do mine! Bwahahahha. Because I always have something ready. Er, or maybe Hannah's, seeing as how she comes after SE.
-
/me sings:
Well the kids are all hopped up and ready to go
Theyre ready to go now
They got their surfboards
And theyre going to the discotheque au go go
But she just couldnt stay
She had to break away
Well new york city really has it all
Oh yeah, oh yeah.
S-E is a punk rocker!
S-E is a punk rocker!
S-E is a punk rocker now!
He's a punk punk, a punk rocker
punk punk, a punk rocker
punk punk, a punk rocker
-
Well, wook-E, do you have a submission for us this week? Or should we pass on to Hannah?
-
I'm too punk to have a submission for this week
-
This is getting to be a bad habit, SE.
Hannah, you have something ready?
-
"getting to be?"
-
hrm. good point
By the way, we'll be going over my submission on Wednesday. Let me know if you didn't get it or if you can't attend.
-
Well, due to problems out of our control, speculists couldn't meet this week.
We'll meet next week to go over mine, which will give SE and Hannah more time to be ready for their submissions. See the schedule to stay tuned.
-
Looks like everything has been pushed back another week. Me...again....next week. Hopefully people can come this time.
-
no one emailed me a sub for this week.
-
That would be because it's the 3rd week in a row we're doing my submission (or *not* doing it as the case may be). You already have it.
Just FYI, we may be closing up the speculists for the time being and merging the groups (this means no Wednesday meeting this week). Active membership has been sporatic so some of us are breaking camp and joining othe forces.
-
So, I've emerged from the pit. After I'm done with grad school applications, I'd like to rejoin the Abridged Speculists, if there are any spots open.
So… who can give me an update on what's going on in TWG Writing Group-land?
-
Unfortunately, AS has been disbanded. A new group, the Type & Gripe (http://www.timewastersguide.com/forum/index.php?board=20.0) has been going for about 4 months. You may join our ranks, if you wish.
