Title: WorldCon 2007
Post by: digitalbias on August 28, 2006, 06:59:06 PM
So, now that WorldCon is over, the question I have is: Next year are people more likely to go to world con in Japan, or the North American Science Fiction Convention instead?

Another question...Did I read this right?

"Denver has won the right to host the 2008 World Science Fiction Convention." from http://www.denver2008.com/

Moving this to Brandon's department since this is where the Worldcon shop talk happens.

I know EUOL and I are planning on hitting Japan next year but I doubt any others will.

Steve Diamond might go, as might a pal of his.

I would love to go. If I can get my trip covered by work, I will. But...that seems unlikely. However, I might still go anyway. Maybe. But I won't decide anytime soon. If I don't go, I'll probably go to World Fantasy next year instead.

Japan!!!  Yes, i do hope to go with my co-author buddie.

As you may have noticed, my name has been changed.  I am no longer Diamante.  I am Hence-forth known as "Bookstore Guy"!!  Those who were at Worldcon know why!!

Hah! How awesome would it be if Alan, Ookla and I all were able to go?  All I know is if Mrs. EUOL (Evil Undead Over Lady?) goes them me and her will probably jet to Kyoto for a day because that would be more interesting then nerd con, plus I told myself next time I was in Japan I was going to go there and I intend to keep said promise.

Or Shinkansen to Kyoto.

I never made it there in my half year in the country. Stupid me.

Ya, I was using Jet as an implication of a quick travel not that we'd take a plane there.

If I sell a book between now and then, and if I get a good advance, I'll go. So let it be written!

I think you're lying

Both on the basis of the disturbing fascination they have with school girls and the fact that you went.

Wait.  Is it me, or did he just call Fell a school girl?

I was going to argue the point, but because that interpretation is so awesome I'm going to co-opt it.

Fell, a school girl?

Me parece perfecto...

I am half tempted to start a thread of most embarrasing and humorous things said and done at Worldcon...should we?  I mean, shoot, the stories we could tell of being propositioned for a headband, or bashing Scalzi as he walked by...classics (not that anyone those happened to me or anything...)

At least there's no schoolboy in HIS pants.

There was an error in translation.  The word used was schule, not schuler, as Parker misheard.  So technically, it wasn't just one schoolboy, but a whole entire school in the aforementioned pants.

But that's way too impersonal.  If the person who said that had actually *been* to Germany, he or she would know that Germans are notorious for dropping their endings, in which case, vocally, there's practically no difference between schuele and schueler, especially when mangled with an American accent.  In this case, one must go with what makes more sense.  An entire school fitting in someone's pants?  I don't think so.  A school boy?  Possibly.  QED

The person who said it has actually been to Germany.  He also said that he had a crocodile up his nose and the he was the king of the lions.  (This, however, does not make up for his incredibly thick American accent.  But hey, he doesn't feel so dumb.  JFK made mistakes with his German, too.)

I want to hear a full report from Dan on his potential big break. I only heard short secondhand mentions of it.

I spent most of my time hanging out at the publisher panels, where they talked about all of their upcoming books, because it was a great way to meet editors and get to know what they liked. At the Ace/Roc presentation I decided that Blacker Darkness (one of my books, for those that don't know) would be a good fit for their stuff, so I pitched it to one of the editors. She laughed out loud at my brief description, but that's a good thing since it's a comedy; she said it sounded hilarious and please send it to her. That's pretty much the extent of it. I'm mailing it off tomorrow, and we'll see where it goes from there.

That is more promising than any offer I ever got, Fell--even Moshe's.  So, I'm REALLY hoping for you to make it on this one.  You deserve it.

Very cool, now don't screw it up by sending old cheese with your submission.  Even if she is a vampire you want her to buy your book before you kill her.

Anne Sowards, one of the Ace editors, worked on a couple TLE issues by the way.

I *love* Blacker Darkness! It's the only one I've read of yours, Fell, but it still makes me laugh when I think of it. I'm so glad you have someone who is interested--and I sure hope it finds a home. Congrats!  ;D

At least your time machine goes into the future.  Last week, as we trekked back from Ihop, I turned to Parker and Ms. Fish and asked what year we were in, 2005 or 2006.

Yes but your time machine only got forward, unless you've finally figured out how to go back in time without having to go so far into the future that time resets itself.

I'm in the same boat, Fell. I'm currently editing books for fall of 2007 and beyond, and sometimes I have to remind myself when dating things that it's still 06. 06 feels so in the past.

Oh. Yeah. Heh, I didn't even make that connection. I was actually talking about the writing part. You know, kind of a magical consequence of writing, like a superpower.
