It makes me wonder what they're being taught in that school.  Actually, I'm sure the main teaching is coming from the parents.

I was more than a little shocked when I came upon the same story this morning.  You would think as friggin' PC and liberal as this county is that this practice would have been taken care of a long time ago.

This is a real shame and a great step backwards.

Actually Mr P, PC attitudes tend to re-inforce this kind of stuff.

We tried the whole PC thing. We ended up with gangs of white and gangs of arabs in bradford rioting and fighting.

Although that was a different situation. God (or possibly "gawd") only knows what it happening down there.
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

Frankly, I find that offensive. Not all of us are biggoted arses who don't teach their children right. Not all of us beat gays or burn crosses.

I disagree.  I think that it doesn't reinforce the attitude, but that bigoted people use Political Correctness and Civil Rights laws as an excuse to be bigoted even more.

(I dislike the phrase "Political Correctness" because it is so loaded, but whatever.)

I do think that you can be PC to the extreme, and I do think that some people are a little touchy.  I guess my point is that people should not be forced to be PC, but that it is essential for government to be PC.

I also think that the parents of those kids need a kick in the head.

I agree with Ehlers, I think the people I know from the south are less racist than a lot of Yankees I know. And I know quite a few of both.

While I'm not a big proponent of PC as it is mostly crap, it doesn't support this kind of action.  People should definitely not be required to be PC, I'm certainly not.

I'm just saying that I'm surprised the rabid PC folks that seem to be everywhere didn't pick up on this before.

I didn't say everyone is worse down there, in fact I know a lot of southerners who are very friendly. But racism is alot worse in the south then anywhere else.

The South has an undeserved reputation for being worse for racism. Been to New York lately? How about Maine? What about the Rodney King race riots? What city was that in? Oh yeah. LA. Not the South. Oh yeah. You're laying smack down about my home, and you apparently don't know what you're talking about. Please don't.

Then don't take it so offensively. South has a bad rap for racism because there is still a lot of racism. I'm not comparing it to anything in my original post. I have sympathy for anyone who has to deal with racism like the high school prom issue.

One more thing. Look at the number of Arabs and Middle Eastern citizens who were unjustly persecuted over 9-11. Look at all these other problems. Racism is not a regional problem. It's a humanity wide problem.

Yeah, the South had a major problem with slavery and racism in the Civil War. But the WHOLE COUNTRY kept killing off Native Americans and pushing them out of their homes over the course of 300 years. Civil Rights for minorities were as bad in the west and the north as in the South in the mid-20th century.

When I went to school in North Carolina I had more peers and more professors interested in non-prejudicial thought (AND instilling the same in their students) who were of minority descent than any other place.

Yeah, you've got a problem about Prom that happens to be in Georgia. But you're talking out your ear as soon as you apply that to the whole region.

"don't take it offensively?" when what you are saying is clearly offensive and unfounded? Come off it. I heard more jokes at the expense of blacks and hispanics in Nevada and Utah than I *ever* did in Virginia or North Carolina. Or for that matter while at national conventions for Phi Theta Kappa, which is roughly 50% southern (alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana).
