Rants and Stuff / Re: For Brandon - Religion (Potentially sensitive)

I don't think that he isn't reading this thread, but he did say he would no longer reply unless it was returned to the original track. I believe after the last couple of posts we may hear from him again.

Just as an observer in this discussion, not having anything really new to add before, I wanted to say that I thought this was the most civil discussion of delicate topics I have ever seen. Even when there were disagreements. Thank you to everyone involved for proving that it can be done.

Thank goodness she really isn't that stupid, and not too proud to admit her mistakes, not only to herself, but to others as well.

Sorry if that didn't make sense, but it was the first thing that popped into my mind when I read that chapter. I am also glad that Vasher is as I felt him to be, not a bad guy, just bad with people. :) I understand that failing, I have it from time to time, but not quite as fully as he does.

This is feeling like things are going to be moving a bit quickly from this point on, and I love it when Brandon's books get to that point. Very good chapter I thought.

As for trusting Vasher right off, he had a week to kill her while she was recovering, and did not do so. In the mind of a rational person, as Vivenna supposedly is, this would mean that he didn't intend to kill her at all. It would not only have been much easier, but he didn't have to give her the proper command to get her Breath back either. He could have left her as a Drab. Both good points if arguing for the trusting issue.

I like the cover art for this book very much :D If I had children in this age range I would definitely buy it for them. I might just buy it for them now and let them grow into it. After I get to read it first that is ;)

Thank you for the information Dan. I appreciate it, even if I am not sure if I will ever make it to where those delightful apples are :( I am sadly in Washington state, and before you ask , yes we have all kind of apple here. But none of them sound as yummy as the caramel with chocolate and nuts. I haven't ever found anywhere local that does that kind of apple fixing.

First, let me answer the Cheeto question. Crunchy, because they are yummier ;) And much less gooey and icky afterward.

Secondly, where do you get the apples??? I have to have one, they sound like my kind of fruit :D

Umm, well, I cut and pasted that segment into Word, and did a Spell and Grammar check, which then gave me the readability score, which on the Flesch-Kincaide grade level was at a 12.0.  Don't worry, I didn't keep the work, I was just awfully curious about the answer to that question :)

Edit: That grade level seemed low to me and I remember that the ease of readability number was also on there, so I checked it, and the above mentioned paragraph had a readability score of  0.0, which I thought was interesting.

I really liked this chapter, especially Allmother. I think that she quite nicely halts any way that Lightsong could have gotten out of DOING something, if , and when, a war finally breaks out. Well done :)

I hope to see much more improvement in Vivenna, and am extremely encouraged by your response to our questions and discussions about her plight. I anxiously await this chapter every week, with school being so hectic and homework heavy this quarter, it is the only "fun" reading that I get to do. So, thank you for that. :D

Shrain, I can only imagine how you must be feeling, but you should look at the good points of the day. You did get him to stop hitting her right then, instead of maybe an hour or two later when she was in much worse shape. Also, you hopefully showed her that someone thinks that she is worth something and that it will reach her.Your landlord also took a stand that could give her the opportunity she needs to make a break from him, which she will hopefully think about taking him up on.

I hope tomorrow sees you feeling better, but remember that you did a good thing today :)

I had heard a rumor previously about this and was wondering how they would be able to do it full justice, and now I understand. I am glad that a cable movie channel is planning for it.

I think that his answers to anyone who questioned even a little bit of his process or end result were unquestionably overreactionary. I agree with Saint Ehlers in seeing where he is coming from on some of his issues, and yes, it would be taken in a totally different way if he was just to say that it is important to his work and is enjoyed by many readers.

But saying that anyone that disagrees with his way of thinking, or questions his writing, is, and this is not a direct quote, railing against a writer who uses his brain for something other than space filler, is asinine, in my opinion. Not to mention that it insults a great deal of the population in the world.

I have a very large "to read" pile that does include a couple of Terry's books that were given to me by a friend who knows I like fantasy books, and while I am curious about some of his work, I am not sure I am willing to spend three hundred pages being preached at. Being honest with myself, I will probably still read them, if only to better educate myself with his work, but his interviews and reactions to others is very off putting to a reader that has never opened one of his books.

Oh, I like that one so much better. I am in total agreement about the look of the picture, and it is actually a scene that I can think of in the book, minus the sickles that is. I wonder why this one was left on the shelf, so to speak, or if maybe the decision isn't final yet. I know it is kind of monochromatic, but I think that is part of the appeal, for me, as the hb cover is very monochromatic as well. I know there are shades, and that sort of thing, but the majority of the picture is one base color. Much better on the bottom picture, I think.

Wow. Ummm, let me see, where to start....

First, I love that we still don't know if Vasher is a good guy or a bad guy, that the lines with him are so blurred as to not even be there. He has taken Vivenna away from Denth twice, and we know that he is not what he appeared, so I am leaning towards good guy with a bad way of going about things, or maybe just a jaded way, but it is still so up in the air. I am glad that he is back though, it seems as if it has been a while since we have seen him.

As for Vivenna, she is starting to think like a human being and I like that. She isn't Miss High and Mighty anymore, she is starting to think about the dilemmas that plague people everyday, on a more extreme scale in her case. Instead of thinking in black and white, she is now thinking in shades of gray, I guess is the point I am trying to make.

I think that I would love this book even if the plot with the God King and the war were gone, because of the sheer force of humanity, and scope of it as well, that you are showing with this. The characters are such a huge part, and you can't just KNOW for sure whether one person is "good" or "bad" from the beginning, as I am sure we have all read with other authors in our lives. The character development is top notch in my opinion and is probably one of the things that I like best about your writing. Well, that and the fact that you manage to still come up with new "magic" systems in a field that has seen many repetitions.

Before anyone jumps on me that wasn't a slam to this field, or to any particular author, just a statement of fact. Brandon, as far as I have seen, is a person that has more imagination than any ten people I know put together and that is what this field has needed for a long time. It is hard to be original when there are only so many things you can do with magic systems, and it just took a bit for  a pioneer to come out of the woodwork, so to speak. That does NOT mean that I would quit reading fantasy, ever, or that I think that it is a badly written field of work.

I love this cartoon for what it is, and I see many of the same problems arising that you all have mentioned previously. I have a really hard time seeing where the effects are going to be able to be the way that we expect them to be in this story. We have such an outstanding example, and it is pretty detailed in the way that the magic works, not in theory but being physically shown. If I was to have reservations about this project, and I kind of do, that is the major point for me. My hope is that it will be so good it will prove me wrong for having such doubts :)
