« on: February 12, 2004, 01:21:19 AM »
First, the teaser trailer:

Fade in onto a barge floating in the middle of the river. A couple of men stand near the wheel, sweeping their searchlight across several upcoming bridges. The camera steadily zooms in until the wheelhouse is in full frame.

Man 1: Quiet night…

Man 2: Yeah, I think we’ll make good time through here.

Screen fades to black.

Text fades onto the screen: <in> This fall <out>

Fade back to wheelhouse

Man 1: Hey, you ever actually been to St. Louis? Frank says that some place called “The Landing” is not to be missed. Drunken girls everywhere!

Man 2: Nope… Never really had any mind to go. One bar’s a good as another to this old riverman. And I wouldn’t pay much heed to anything Franks says.

Man 1: Yeah, well Frank’s seems to know…

A loud crash against the bottom of the barge startles the men and shakes the entire boat

Man 1: What was that?

Screen fades to black

Text fades onto the screen: <in> On the WB <out>

Screen fades back to men scrambling

Man 2: Don’t know…must have hit something.

They sweep the light around the water near them. Just past the edge of the light, something disturbs the water, but quickly submerges as the light approaches. The men look at each other with wide eyes confirming that they both did see it.

Man 2 (nervously): Better have a look to make sure we’re not taking on water…

Screen fades to black

Text fades onto the screen: <in> The Gateway City<out>

Screen fades back to men walking toward the starboard side and then peering into the water. Suddenly, another loud crash rocks the boat, sending the two men to the floor. Large tentacles burst forth from the water, gripping all sides of the barge. The men scream as the barge is capsized and drug under water.

Screen fades to black

Text fades onto the screen: <in> Earns Its Name <out>

Screen fades back to the now calm waters where the barge drug under

Close up on Man 2’s hat floating downstream. The camera pans up to reveal the Arch and the St. Louis skyline.

The screen flashes and fades to black

The Setting: St. Louis, 1999. The show runs concurrent with Buffy Season 4 and Angel Season 1. St. Louis has had a very mystical past…the demon from the exorcist, the Piasaw bird, Cohokia Mounds, and, of course, the Lemps, St. Louis’s premiere brewing family. Their rise to power and subsequent fall have left an indelible mark on the city, a mark some would call a scar. Most St. Louisans have no idea how deep that scar runs.

Not much of mystical St. Louis happenings has been recorded as there has always been a transient nature to the Gateway City. What is known is a little about how the St. Louis Hellmouth was formed. It seems in the late 1800’s, a young sorcerer named Adam Lemp built his first brewery where the Arch now stands. His mystic senses told him it was a place of power and he soon found out why…several powerful ley lines crossed there. Eager for more power he went about the region and shifted other ley lines to intersect at that point causing the fabric between our world and others to thin. This Hellmouth has never been opened, but its threat is still ever present. Adam used the power of the new Hellmouth to summon all manner of demons whom he proceeded to make deals with. The Lemp family rose to power. Then, a few decades later, something caused the family to crumble. Adam disappeared and virtually every prominent member of the family committed suicide.

Things were quiet for years, save the building of the Arch, which worries some people in the know. All records of how it was built and who funded it are missing. The Arch, the most famous monument in St. Louis, sits silently atop the Hellmouth, almost begging someone to tap whatever power it holds.

St. Louis is about to have a rude awakening…

The Cast:

Xing Lo (played by Zhang Ziyi): A fifteen year old student at Charles Limberg High School (Home of the Spirits!) and immigrant from China, Xing is the Slayer, given the gift when Faith flatlined momentarily after her battle with Buffy. Xing is industrious but naïve about American culture. Her parents own a grocery store which she works at in her freetime. Her world changes forever when she meets Karl Janacek…

Karl Janacek (played by Maximillion Schnell): The Watcher. A Hassidic Jew from the Czech Republic, Karl is Limberg High’s new violin teacher. He was recently assigned to the new Slayer despite rumors that he has betrayed the Watcher’s Code and fathered a child. His goal is not only to teach the Slayer about the art of combat, but also to impart on her some appreciation of the finer things in life. As such, he is teaching her violin, which wins the approval of her mother.

Rochelle (“Roach”) Sano (played by Brittany Murphy circa “Clueless”): A complete tomboy, Roach isn’t your standard sixteen year old girl. More into cars than boys, she often helps out at her dad’s repair shop and spends the rest of her time skateboarding around the area and generally staying out of trouble. As pointed out in early episodes, while friendly, she does tend to take cool points away from those she hangs with. She’s been friends with Keishawn since last year and has recently made friends with a new student named Xing Lo.

Keishawn Washington (played by Usher): Keishawn’s parents were a powerful and wealthy family of magic practitioners. Unfortunately for Keishawn, they got themselves into trouble and had to give him over to a demon in exchange for their lives when he was eleven. He served the demon for many years, learning magic and stealing important objects from local sorcerors. A year ago, he boldly escaped from his master and fled to live with his drug-abusing aunt who the family has all but forgot about. He has managed to successfully hide for over a year now while attending Lindberg High, but things get interesting for him when he befriends a new student from China.

Episodes 1.1 and 1.2 were Sweeps Week, the best adventure ever to be included in a core rule book. It was heavily modified to fit my setting, but I'll not mention any details in order to avoid spoilers. However, one major character from there shows up in later episodes, though there's really nothing spoiled.

The main subplot from Sweeps Week 1 and 2 was that Keishawn's aunt had let four people claiming to be friends in to "get back a book he borrowed." They take "An Occult History of St. Louis," an extremely rare book and one of the only ones that chronicles what's happened in the city's shadowy past. Keishawn wants it back, of course, and Karl would like to take a look at it as he has been trying to find a copy for himself, being new to St. Louis and ill-informed by the Watcher's Council.

1.3: Proactivity

The episode begins with the gang on patrol on Friday night on the weekend following the last episode. Early, they meet none other than Will Hindle, or at least the vampire incarnation of the popular former student. He doesn’t seek a fight, but wants to deliver a message for Xing. It seems Gabby Blades, leader of the vampire motorcycle gang “Las Chicas,” would like to meet with her as they like to recruit strong women and anyone who can kill two of her gang must be very strong. The group first encountered word of “Las Chicas” in Sweeps Week Part 1 and had their basic history from Karl’s library. Karl urges her to slay and in less than a moment Will is a pile of dust. Xing is not interested in meeting Gabby.

Keishawn, still upset about the theft of “An Occult History of St. Louis” from his aunt’s apartment last week, seeks to go to Brad Johnson’s home to get it back. Karl, interested in this rare book, agrees. Brad’s car is not at his house and the only light on is the television which is tuned to “Emeril.” Brad’s mom watches intently. No one answers when the gang knocks as Brad’s mom just sits there and his dad soon enters, very slowly to sit beside his wife. The gang knocks on the window but the parents don’t respond at all. The gang eventually enter through the back door and find Brad’s parents in a sort of trance, not noticing them and replying emotionlessly to questions as if the gang were their children. A quick search upstairs finds Keishawn’s book and it happens to be open. They are also able to search Tori’s (Brad’s sister’s) email and find a suspicious email from Brad to his sister, her friend Sara, and his friend Kevin mentioning that “the tip was right, the book has what we need. Meet at the usual spot on Friday.” Brad had deleted all of his email. In the basement the crew finds a pentagram and small altar with the ingredients for several nasty spells. They are left to wonder what’s going on and why Brad wanted the book, rare though it may be.

They return to Karl’s house to find out exactly what Brad was researching and Keishawn tries to find a reversal spell for Brad’s parents. Long into the night, a motorcycle gang of about thirty women rolls by slowly…searching. Roach hops in her car and follows them, eventually leading her to the abandoned Lemp Brewery where she spots the black van that was seen in Sweeps Week Part 1. She returns to tell everyone what she saw.

At Karl’s research has been fruitful. It seems Brad was studying an even that happened in the 1930’s. A powerful demon named Adam was terrorizing the city with his minions who were called “The Brotherhood of Seven,” who thrived on consuming human brains. Little else in mentioned except the following passage of interest “The Covenant was at that time young and would not have been able to stop Adam and his fiends had it not been for the help of the Slayer, a Korean warrior woman of great prowess, and her friend, a private investigator whose name has been lost to history.”

The passage gives the location of the final battle but only by vague landmarks, which Brad had highlighted (much to Keishawn’s disdain). The group works on narrowing down the location to find what Brad is after.

The next day Keishawn finds what he think could reverse the spell on Brad’s parents, but not before Xing decides that Las Chicas need to be exterminated before they cause too much trouble. At midday they head down to the Lemp Brewery. Xing climbs a fire escape to spy on the happenings inside. A handful of vamps are arguing in the shadows below. It seems that their numbers have been depleted after a visit to some place called “Sunnydale” and the group is at such low strength that they are worried of attack. The leader, Gabby, dismisses this mentioning that they have been through harder times and they still needed to narrow down the recruits…can’t have weak women becoming weak vampires, after all. Xing reports what she saw.

The group plans for a bit and then attacks. The battle is swift, but deadly, with Xing taking a terrible slash from Gabby’s sword across the chest. Xing returns the favor and skewers Gabby, hurting the vampire badly. Meanwhile Roach proceeds to surprise one of the minions and proceeds to dust her while Karl dusts another with a well-placed crossbow shot. Keishawn uses his sorcery to distract Gabby, aiding Xing. Xing manages to throw another minions into sunlight while barely defending Gabby’s skilled swordplay. Karl tussles with another and eventually dispatches her using an axe. Soon, with all her minions dead, a shocked Gabby flees into the shadows. St. Louis may never know how much destruction was just averted by the Slayer and her small circle of friends.

1.4 Rogues

The episode opened with it being the first real testing week in school. Given that Roach never cared much for book-learnin’ and Xing’s busy night life, both of their grades have gone down the toilet. Xing’s mother is furious and cancels her violin lessons and grounds her until she raises her grades. This, of course, doesn’t sit well with Karl.

Still, on Friday she manages to sneak out and patrol with Karl and Roach. Down by the riverfront Xing is ambushed by a female troll clad in a chainmail bikini. A quick brawl ensues and the troll falls. A male troll then emerges and helps his mate up. Karl introduces them as Lars and Helga, a married troll couple who live under the Poplar Street and Blanchette bridges, respectively. Karl had set up the fight to train Xing on fighting larger enemies.

The next day Xing is working in her parents shop under the disapproving eyes of her mother when something huge bursts through one of the walls. A big, invisible force cuts a swath of destruction through the store in a beeline for Xing. Xing fends for herself with a broomstick but is devastated by a punch from the thing and she flees. It follows her, slowly, outside and is working to catch up with her when a motorcycle rider ramps over a curb and launches ditches his bike in mid-air. The bike crashes into the invisible creature and sets it aflame. The man then draws a circle on the ground and pulls several orbs out of his jacket which spiral and circle about the thing. The creature’s outline momentarily becomes visible. It stands seven feet tall and four foot wide and is in the rough shape of a human.

The man, realizing his tactic didn’t work, rushes away with the creature following. Xing follows along until they lose it. The man then introduces himself as Wesley Whyndam-Pryce, Rogue Demon Hunter. He says he has pursued this demon for 3 weeks from New Mexico. It has traveled in a completely straight line to St. Louis and Xing is the only thing that seemed to take it off its course. Wesley mentions that he managed to knock off a piece of the thing with a track-hoe and when placed it water it acts as sort of a compass, pointing towards his quarry and vibrating when it is close. He gives Xing his cell number in case she is attacked again and then leaves.

Xing quickly goes to Karl’s where Roach soon arrives. Karl has been busy pinpointing the location of the last stand of Adam Lemp from the highlighted sections of “An Occult History of St. Louis.” Xing tells her story and Karl hesitantly calls Wesley, who he knows only by reputation. In a conversation riddled with barbs, Wesley agrees to help Karl and learns that Xing is the Slayer…leading him to the realization that Faith may be dead.

When all are gathered their research leads them to think of some kind of earth elemental, which was what Wesley suspected. The Elemental Balance spell he performed at Xing’s parent’s shop was meant to stop such a creature, but it obviously failed. Xing also learned that she is not, in fact, the only Slayer alive as she hears of both Buffy and Faith (who may or may not be dead as far as the cast know). Before much more can be discussed the piece of the creature begins to vibrate. The crew readies themselves to flee and decide to head towards a construction site to bring out some heavy equipment.

As they leave, the thing comes around the corner. Amazingly, Karl can see it, but he is the only one.

Continued:

Karl gets out and confronts the thing to learn it follows his commands. It also wears a strange medallion around its neck. As the other gather, Karl’s control is broken as someone shouts, “Kill the Slayer!” in Hebrew. The call came from a nearby car that immediately speeds away. The creature again rampages and manages to hurt most everyone until Xing breaks the medallion making it visible. Everyone then flees. Karl goes to research as he thinks he knows what it is while the others head toward the construction site. As time passes, they realize the creature is not coming. The compass says it is moving away.

Meanwhile, Karl reseaches The Golem of Jewish history and finds a number of disturbing similarities…made of earth, man shaped, and wearing a medallion that makes it invisible to all but the Jewish. He also learns it only follows the commands of its maker…

He soon relays this and the group tracks The Golem to a small townhouse. Inside, Karl sees none other than his brother, Christos. Karl enters and talks with his brother to find the full story: Christos built the Golem to serve and protect him. He has been using it to rob banks and armored cars in the south. Three weeks ago it stopped obeyin his commands and began its long march toward St. Louis. Christos used demonic powers to animate the creature and thinks it interpreted the protection to extend to his entire family. So, when the Slayer was Chosen it sensed danger in Karl’s life and came to town. He wants the Slayer dead so he can go about using his Golem as he pleases. Karl decks him.

This, of course, activates the Golem’s protection initiative and it rushes to attack Karl who escapes as Xing distracts it. They then prepare the ritual Karl learned and manage to destroy the creature. Karl’s brother has, of course, disappeared.

Wesley says his goodbyes and his thanks and heads to California to check on Faith’s condition as the Scoobies head back to deal the chaos left in the Golem’s wake.
