Welcome to the arena. Here shall be the Proving. Show us all how you are the most hardcore of Brandon Sanderson fans.
And... go!
-
Well Chaos we aren't allowed to compete considering... well we made him.
-
I spend all day every day (even during work hours!) thinking and obsessing about the tiny details of Brandon's books. And when I go home at night I still read his forums, facebook posts, and even check the emails that people send to him. And most of my social activities are at his house.
-
Chaos are we really letting Peter compete?
-
You just don't wanna lose. Wimps.
-
I have several. One, my cousin works for Brandon. ;)
Two, I have a 22+ page Brandonology for all of the beyond book quotes (HoA Q&A, Barnes & Nobles, etc). And I can speak fairly decent Eastern Slang.
Three, I was the first one to suggest Hoid as Terrisman in HoA. I even asked him it, but he dodged my question! (It's true, look at Barnes & Nobles)
Four, I figured out Clod is Arsteel. And I asked the question that gave us the planets names, and a Warbreaker shard (The Voice aka Endowment).
I think that's pretty good for a late comer.
-
Chaos are we really letting Peter compete?
He's employed by Brandon, so... no.
-
The usual rules for most contests rule out employees of a company (in this case, person) and their immediate families.
Peter, I ought to worship you in your own right (regardless of whether you're allowed to compete)...you're actually paid to be a top fan.
-
Why would I be afraid of losing in a competition that i can not compete in....Chaos designed Brandon and I made him therefore we are not involved.
P.S. remember that Chaos is omniscient while i am omnipotent
-
Four, I figured out Clod is Arsteel.
Not to be a party pooper, but pretty much everyone figured out Clod is Arsteel. 8)
Can't say I'm an überfan. I mean, I've read every book he's published, I stood in line at the Warbreaker launch, and I've read all the Mistborn annotations, but that's just ordinary stuff. I've never been willing to do superfan crap (like drive hundreds of miles for a launch party, and come in costume) for anything.
Honestly, though, this contest is pointless. Either Miyabi or FRR is going to waltz in here and trounce us all.
-
Ya, I was in class with Brandon and watched FRR force Brandon to sign about a dozen books after class, then they had a long discussion about things I had no idea about. She was talking about books he's written that aren't even published.
-
Hey, 10 of those books were Mr. J's. I only had him signing three books for my little brother.
And as for the title, someone else can have it. I DON'T want to be a super fan, unless I have no say in the matter.
-
I would hereby like to put my name in for the title of Superfan, on the following grounds:
One: I read all of EUOL's books from Elantris to Warbreaker in a five day period.
Two: As was mentioned by Erik and FRR, I have a bunch of copies of Mistborn. I currently have 12 in my possession, nine of which are First Edition Hardcovers. All are signed.
Three: I've had dinner with EUOL, in part to ask his advice about getting a webcomic up and going.
Four: EUOL told me (and a select number of others) an approximate timeline of the Adonalsium Mythos.
Five: EUOL has Tweeted about me.
Six: I went to three of EUOL's signings in the space of fourteen days, at one of which, I stood next to him while he signed and folded his nifty book inserty things.
Seven: I have several of EUOL's unpublished works on my computer.
Eight: I've seen the finished artwork for both the Axehound and the Sky Eel from the upcoming book "The Way Of Kings"
Nine: I'm one of EUOL's test readers.
Ten: I met my girlfriend at one of EUOL's signings, and have attended his class with her (yes, it's where I got some of the books signed.)
Thank you all for your consideration.
-
Aren't test readers employees....
-
Aren't test readers employees....
Nope. Just giving EUOL some feedback on the next book before publishing. Besides, employee implies I'd be getting paid to do it.
-
I've driven more than anyone to visit his signings and release events (or so he wrote in my Warbreaker copy).
I've purchased well over 70 copies of his books and personally convinced about 50 people to read his books. (only one of those wasn't blown away by them, and he really just hasn't gotten around to finishing Mistborn yet)
He once compared me to a "drug pusher" of his writing :)
I pretty much try and be a fan by sharing with others.
Edit: I also set out in August 2008 to start reading the Wheel of Time series with the purpose of being able to read Brandon's contribution to the series. On Saturday I finally finished Knife of Dreams and started the new one. That's over a year (14-15 months) of all my precious reading time (minus a break for Warbreaker and Alcatraz) spent reading a series (and about it's 1880 characters) just so I could read Brandon's new book in context (not that I haven't enjoyed it).
Edit 2: The universe recognizes my level of fandom which has lead to both times Brandon has raffled out a Mistborn 3 manuscript at a signing/release (WoA and Warbreaker) someone who came with me has won it. That plus the ARC Brandon gave me personally when he came to Denver for a signing (several months before the official release) means that I think our group has more 'generations' of Hero of Ages than anyone else except for Brandon.
-
I, too, probably demonstrate my Superfan nature by recommending Sanderson books to others. I've worn out my paperback copies lending them out to people.
However, I would put forward the fact that Brandon Sanderson popped into my head at a particularly important moment as evidence of my Superfan-ness:
I was deep in the analytical writing section of the GRE (Graduate Record Examination, for those who don't know, the test most graduate programs require) and the topic I was supposed to be dissecting was perseverance, can practice really make perfect or something like that (you only have 45 minutes to write the essay, so it's now sort of a blur). I'd argued the counterpoint and was trying to conjure examples and the first one that sprang to mind was how Brandon Sanderson wrote more than a dozen novels before he was published, etc. And so I proceeded to rattle on for a couple of paragraphs about "Brandon Sanderson, the well-known fantasy novelist, blah blah blah..."
Anyway, I got a perfect score on that essay, which I was totally not expecting, and I must credit the greatest of the example for it.
Who else but a true Superfan would think of that at such a high pressure "my whole future might depend on this" type of moment?
I rest my case.

*cough cough cough* Now that I have all your attention.
1 - I vote for Peter.
2 - Jordan (Brandon's brother) recognizes me and waves before I even realize he is in the area.
3 - Brandon recognized me by screen name when I made a comment during the EUOL V. Jason Magic match in the chat and said, "Oh hey that's a friend of mine."
4 - I can nearly draw a 9 point defense freehand. (Though I still struggle making the circle perfect.)
5 - I have a defense (Not sure if it will ever actually be used, but none the less) named after me
6 - I at one point had at least 3 (maybe 4 I can't remember for sure) different email addresses for Brandon.
7 - I have FOUR that's 1, 2, 3, 4! number ones. (Japanese copies of: Elantris vols. 1 and 2. The Final Empire vols. 1 and 2.)
8 - I once waited in line for over 24 hours for Warbreaker.
9 - I am not a palm tree.
10 - I know the Mistborn Llama story.
11 - I went to a signing before Brandon was married.
12 - I made one of those English teachers who hate fantasy fall in love with EUOL
13 - I am co-founder of the official Brandon Sanderson fan site
14 - I know off hand who took the pictures of Brandon and Jordan that are used most often.
15 - I should stop before I hurt myself.
16stars - Yup, I'm done.
-
Mistborn Llama Story?! Do tell! ;D

My Personal Rebuttal -
1 - Participant is ineligible, while I do agree with you.
2 - FRR says that the reason for that is because of the Rifftrax party
3 - If EUOL referred to you as friend, that totally counts
4 - I'll get back to you once I finish Scribbler.
5 - You have said defense thanks to the fact that I had a camera on me. You're welcome, BTW.
6 - Superfan or creepy stalker?
7 - wow.
8 - Okay.
9 - That's right. You're a SWORD.
10 - So do I.
11 - Shows how long you've been a fan, not level of fanhood.
12 - Impressive feat, in and of itself.
13 - I'm contributing, as soon as I get to TGS
14 - We'll make that a valid point.
15 - You used that to make sure you got to sixteen
16stars - I'm the reason we have that. Again, you're welcome
All in fun, mate *Peace!*
-
I'll give you 15, 11, 5, and 2. ;)
-
I'll give you 15, 11, 5, and 2. ;)
I insist on having 16 and 1 as well.

I can't really hold a candle to most people in this thread, but I'll go on regardless:
1) I once spent an entire bored, empty Sunday rehearsing and recording a voiceover of Kwaan's steel plate. With the original lines and Ruin-corrupted lines.
2) I also figured out that Clod is Arsteel, but meh.
3) I know far too much stuff about the expanded BS universe than a Californian high school student should. I've never even been to Utah, let alone BYU, though this will probably be remedied when I start doing college visits this summer.
4) I once sent the Warbreaker PDF to no less than eleven people I had made the recommendation to. Nine of those asked where they could buy Elantris within a week, and are now fervently awaiting ToW and WoK.
5) I convinced my sophomore English teacher that a creative writing class would be a really neat thing for the school to have - based on the sort of work creative writing can produce, like, hey, Mistborn.
6) I have most, if not every, unpublished work EUOL has put up for download saved on their own USB stick, should those download links ever stop working.
7) Out of sheer boredom, I once tried to figure out why each metal corresponded to its particular ability. I got some pretty beastly explanations written up, but they're all probably way off the mark.
8) I just realized an eight and a closed parenthesis make that little emoticon with the sunglasses.
You used that to make sure you got to sixteen
Of course. The number of universal power ensures his victory. : p

6 - Which ones do you have?
7 - I'd like to see that, you should post it for fun in it's own topic
There is much more than you and I have any idea about, I'm pretty sure J and I are talking about something you aren't aware of though.
-
Which ones do you have?
Uh, the first few chapters of Liar of Partinel and Scribbler, and all the old versions of Warbreaker, that I can recall in specific. There are probably others, but I'd have to go across a city to a public storage facility to get that flash drive.
EDIT: Oh, and the Elantris short story. And Defending Elysium.
...I don't think Firstborn counts, since it's up on the Tor website.
-
I see.
J, you can have 16 and 1 I guess. ;)
/me resists posting numerous other things I can think of.

And I asked the question that gave us the planets names
Actually, I asked that question on the Barnes & Nobles Q&A, because I had gotten sick of calling Elantris's world Opelon. Feel free to falsify me if I'm misremembering, or you asked before me. But I was fairly certain that once I asked that question, he listed a bunch of names of worlds that were new to us.
-
i think he gave us about 6 worlds including Scardiel
-
i just read the words "Axehound and Sky Eel" and i am now even more anxious to read WoK.
now for my fandomness...
I have signed copies of all of Brandon's books other than the GS, which i'm still working my way up the series for.
I was the first person (on this forum at least) to theorize figure out that Vin's earring was a spike.
I've read Aether of Night and Dragonsteel, along with everything posted on his website
I have brought over twenty people to the knowledge and fandom of Brandon
My copy of mistborn is falling apart from being loaned so many times.
I have Brandon's cell phone number (yeah, i know that sounds stalker-like. oh well)
-
You forgot to mention you have a beastly signature.
-

You're right. Sorry!
-
I'm not even an option for winning this (I, in no way, know or have ever met Brandon - although I want to abduct him away to the frozen north and am seeding that thought in minds with accompanying novels in hands of people who can make plane tickets happen).
I'm simply enjoying the show. Also, wishing that I lived some place where I could hang out with you guys.
-
Me, I'm just a basic fan.
Enjoying watching the competition among you loonies.
-
And now, I join the fray.
For theory cred, I am the first one on the forum to discover Ruin's name. I posted that Ruin & Preservation topic way back when, before Mistborn 3. Before that, they called Ruin "The Evil Well Spirit of Doom". To be fair, in my original theory-ness, I called it the "Ruin Entity", which Peter helpfully corrected to simply "Ruin". You're welcome.
I've created the MB3 Countdown thread, where a good many things were guessed in those final days. In fact, I guessed that Ruin was after the atium.
My final Hero of Ages theories was the most massive of all the forums. It's somewhere around 8,000 words long. I'm harder-core when it comes to delving into Brandon's work than any of y'all :P
When I first read Hero of Ages, I took notes as I pieced things together. That document, in itself, is quite long.
Speaking of Hero of Ages, I own three hardcovers of the novel.
As for book-ownership goes, I have a signed hardback of Elantris, a signed paperback of Elantris, signed hardback of Mistborn, Well of Ascension, a signed numbered Hero of Ages, and Warbreaker. This christmas I got two box sets of the Mistborn trilogy. I also have another hardback of Well of Ascension. When the MB1 paperback was $5 I bought seven of them, giving rise to...
(http://img65.imageshack.us/img65/4707/mistbornshc3.th.jpg) (http://img65.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mistbornshc3.jpg)
I've lent all of these MB1 books out to people. In fact, in my Honors Seminar, Texts & Critics, we had a day where we could bring in a book to share with people. I brought that stack of seven Mistborn's and lent them out there :)
I also own three Aon pendants.
All that stuff can be topped (Miyabi probably has, already). But. But. I have the #1 Table of Allomantic metals, which is now sitting on a wonderful frame above my computer. It is very pretty.
-
SEVEN copies of FE? ha haha. Nice.
-
This does not count the ugly Vin FE paperback, which I lent out, to never be returned. Not that I'm complaining :P
-
Yeah, that cover left something to be desired... I need a copy with the new cover... my old one is worn out. I'll have to keep it though, as a holy relic of all the people I've converted to Sanderson fans with it.
-
SEVEN copies of FE? ha haha. Nice.
And that also had to do with the fact that I needed to buy enough to get Super Saving shipping off of Amazon :P

"Something left to be desired"... I'll say! But yeah, a holy relic is awesome. I'm just not careful with my copies that I lend out... they tend to disappear. Which is fine with me :P
-
You needed to spend more money on duplicate books to save money on shipping? How does that work? :)
-
You needed to spend more money on duplicate books to save money on shipping? How does that work? :)
Generally they'll ship for free or reduced rates if you purchase enough from some online shops - I used to shop at one that would ship for free if I filled the shipping box fully and got the slowest shipping service they offered.
-
You gennerally spend more, but hey you are "saving". Just like you are "saving" money with a buy 1 get one free of some item you have no use for.
P.S. I'm guilty of this with amazon books too :-[

Right, I'm familiar with these offers, although I usually buy things that I'm likely to use with them. Not sure I'd make use of seven copies of Mistborn, although I have been known to pick up seconds before.
-
I'll just throw out that I went out to dinner with Brandon and his wife :)
I remember way back when on the Hemalurgy thread me and someone (miyabi?) began to speculate that the placement of spikes had something to do with it
annnndddd come February I'll have a picture proving that I really just love his books WAY too much XD

At the time I had lost my ugly Vin MB1 paperback and I wanted some more copies to lend out to people.
-
Yeah, well, I am six foot seven and 240 pounds.
Edit: Sorry, thought we were fighting over biggest fan. My bad.
-
Are you seriously 6' 7"?

No, but there's always another secret...

*rimshot*
Wow, you guys are awesome. I live about an hour from BYU and can't match half of these. Heck, I don't even own any of Brandon's books, being the poor teenager that I am. *is shamed*
-
Mistborn Llama Story?! Do tell! ;D
If I told you, I'd have to kill you.
Tell, regardless. This is how I'm proving my Super-fanness. ;)
-
While many of you make a great case, I will not cast my vote for the ultimate Superfan until I see a copy of the No Contact Order Brandon had to take out against you. That's when you know you made it, baby. ;) ;) ;)

1. I live in Canada, so all visitation credits are nix when in comparison with me.
I was the first person (on this forum at least) to theorize figure out that Vin's earring was a spike.
2. But I am the one who discovered the passages saying Alendi had the piercing of the hero, and who kept harping on the metal lake until someone listened.
3. I bought Elantris on a whim soon after it came out, and have since then ordered every single book to be delivered on it's date of publication.
4. Easy one, but the Way of Kings cover is my desktop background.
5. I once wrote an email with a creative enough intro that was actually only about when the book came out in Canada that brandon sent me the first two chapters of mistborn: well of ascension before he published them online.
6. I've gotten numerous people to read his books, including people who don't like to read period, who don't read fantasy, I even got my Dad (who only reads political or theological books) to read Elantris, and he used it in either a sermon or a sunday school lesson, I forget which.
7. Every person who I know who has read the books (except maybe one, but that's debateable), read them because of me, and read at least the first book on one of my copies.
8. I don't lend out my book jackets because they are so precious to me.
9. I'm considering (Haven't done it yet) reading wheel of time solely because brandon is nuts about them and is finishing the series.
10. I check his blog every day. (Or almost)
11. I bring his books up in any conversation that is even remotely pertinent
Not as impressive as some others, but still I'd say I'm at least in the running (remember meetings and signing are nix when compared to me until Brandon does a Canadian tour!)
-
Alright, I might as well put in my fan-quirks here...
1. Everybody who knows me knows about Mistborn, because I obsess about it often.
2. I've actually said, "Brandon Sanderson is MY Hero Of Ages."
3. Also, "He's the Kelsier to my Vin/Obi Wan to my Luke!"
4. I've had Mistborn shoes commissioned for me.
5. I really want the Allomantic symbol jewellry. Or an Aon pendant.
6. I am an avid student of Writing Excuses.
7. I'm afraid to try drawing his characters, because I might ruin them.
8. I have, however, done both Elantris and Mistborn fanfiction.
Those are my top reasons... I'm sure I have a few more, minor quirks, but these are the worst ones I could think of...
-
You so have to post pics of your shoes!
-
Last week in honor of Brandon's 5th year of being published and as a gift to him I personally gave him over 100 new readers/fans in just over a 24 hour period. Yes that isn't a typo, over one hundred. That's just people that I'm aware of who are now or will shortly be starting one of his books for the first time directly because of me and my influence. Who knows how many it will be once they enjoy it and share it.
-
That is some ultimate fandom. You're insane, Phaz.
-
Yeah; did you have to bludgeon them over the head to read it?
Kidding, of course, I guess my friends aren't as hard-wired for these kind of books like I am...
-
no kidding. I'm converting fan number TWO...but I've only been reading the books for a few months :D

I think this is the first quantifiable category of ultimate fandom. Hands down, you have won on that count. Not even Miyabi can question it :P
