Anyone want to do some translating for us? Are those two alternate covers, or did the book get printed in two volumes? Can you order it off of the web page, or is this just the publisher's website?
I really wish I could contact the publisher myself. Now that I've lost to Scalzi, I have to look toward next year in Japan. That means getting the Japanese people to read ELANTRIS!
-
Its printed in two parts and you can order it from that site and they sell for around $10 each.
Also those are two very cool covers, very Amano-ish.
-
Humm lets see, the full title of Elantris in Japanese is:
Elantris: Sasareta Miya no monogatari
or Elantris: Legend of the Closed City.
Sasareta is to be caused shut (passive) or Kusarisareta is another possible read as To be Chained.
Miya is metropolis or capital
monogatari is legend, story, tale.
-
Yes, I like the covers a lot. They're particularly good compared to some of those around them.
Is there any contact info for the publisher besides a customer support email or a webmaster email?
-
Amazon's links for them (if you were planning on ordering one I'd suggest from them, even though this is the Japanese site they do have international shipping)
Book 1 (http://www.amazon.co.jp/0a80e90f30c80ea0b9%939605508c05f%90fd06er69%8a9e-N0a/dp/4150204225/sr=8-2/qid=1156806932/ref=sr_1_2/250-4456915-6181058?ie=UTF8&s=gateway)
Book 2 (http://www.amazon.co.jp/0a80e90f30c80ea0b9%939605508c05f%90fd06er69%8a9e-N0b-2/dp/4150204233/sr=8-1/qid=1156806932/ref=sr_1_1/250-4456915-6181058?ie=UTF8&s=gateway)

Not that I could find. There's a phone, fax and street address though.

Wouldn't Joshua have some contact info considering he's the one that got the deal in the first place?
-
Ha! One would think.
This is sweet. No surprise it's in two parts--they do that a lot. Even to Harry Potter.
Judging from Greg Egan winning the Seiyun award 6 (?) times in a row, I'm thinking that the SF-con-going Japanese fan prefers hard SF over fantasy. And I have no idea what kind of numbers they'll come out in to a Worldcon in their country. We could have very interesting awards next year. Heck, it's a surprise to me that there's no Japanese city gunning for a 2009 bid. ;)
-
the cover to the 2nd half is really awesome! if i could read japanese i would get them...
-
Those are great covers.
-
I liked the second one most. First time I've seen an Elantrian rendered artistically (Raoden, I'm betting), and I think the representation is snazzy.
-
Me likes.
-
I'll be the voice of dissent and say I don't like those covers.
-
Sweet I am so gonna buy them.
Oh and Brandon I could also help you do some translating as well.
-
eh...He already has it translated, it's called the original version.
-
I was talking about other books that might be translated.
-
Ahh, well the publisher for that language hires their own translators, EUOL and TOR don't have anything to do with that. Though, I guess you could contact Hayakawa and see if they're hiring.
-
Oh I didn't know that. I had just seen the line in Brandons first post about people wanting to help translate.
-
He was asking about the site itself.
-
Yes, sorry for the confusion. The site itself was in Japanese, and so I couldn't read anything about the book!
When we sell rights to a book, we sell translation rights. Essentially, a publisher buys the opportunity to publish the book in a particular language. So, I don't have anything to do with it beyond saying "yes" and signing a contract.
-
Hey Brandon, you don't need any personal serveants on that trip to japan do you?
-
I plan on buying it and reading it in Japanese... so I will let you know how true to the story it is. ^^

Here's a review: http://blog.goo.ne.jp/leftofthemiddle/e/052f0d10fca50f18f42fe87209ed9259
It doesn't say much though.
-
It's positive at least. Ookla's right on the content, mostly just a story summery, comments on Scott Card's recommendation and they saying you should read it and the reviewer is looking forward for mistborn.
-
Just got my copies, much thanks to my Brother, and I'm liking the interior art a lot.  EUOL, you should see if we can get permission to use them on your website.
The intro Picture of Harathen and the Picture of Sarene at the party are very nice, the art style is pretty much a mix of James Christensen and Yositaka Amano.
-
How many interior art pages are there?
-
I think book 1 has 5 and book 2 has 6.

That is all.
:]] I think later tonight if I find time I'll post the English Prologue and the Japanese Prologue (translated) for comparisons.
Also note (Earlier in this topic are some of my first posts ever on TWG . >> I was a loser once. ha ha.)
-
Thanks! Um, could you also type those words in katakana so I can tell what your transliterations are supposed to say? :)

Edited.

I was a loser once. ha ha.)
Are you saying this has changed? (Kidding - TOTALLY kidding! It was just too good of an opening to pass up.)

OUCH! That one stung. xP
-
Sorry, so sorry. You know I didn't mean it.
I like purple and green too, does that help?
-
I guess. ha ha. xD
-
Thanks, Miyabi. Are you sure Dilaf is デイラフ (deirafu) and not ディラフ (dirafu)? Also, the one girl's name is just Shaor, so the transliteration fits fine.
-
D'oh it is ディラフ
I must have been looking at it funny.
-
Man, all this katakana is making me want to whip out my Japanese book from 3 years ago....
-
Let me get this right....katakana is syllabic, and kanji is in pictures?
-
Hiragana ひらがな and katakana カタカナ are phonetic or syllabic.
Kanji 漢字 is ideographic, each symbol stands for an idea or word.
-
Maybe I'm just being wapanese but for some reason I love how エラントリス sounds.
I really like their depiction of Hrathen.
Thanks for the pics.

I like the way it sounds too.

How is everyone getting the Japanese letters/symbols on here?? ??? ??? ??? ???
-
Just type them the same way you type Japanese anywhere else. It doesn't work for you?
-
Maybe Shaggy means how you type Japanese symbols in the first place.
-
Yeah, Chaos got it. Do you guys have, like, Japanese keyboards or something? Just wondering.…
And I no idea Japanese was so popular, either!!! :o
-
There are ways to type Japanese phonetically using normal roman letters. Look up "Japanese input method" or "Japanese IME"—how to enable it is different depending on your operating system.
-
와, 신기하다.
