Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Countdown
« on: October 02, 2008, 07:59:31 AM »
Elmandr1, I'm going to be as nice as possible. Your first statement regarding prophecies is inaccurate at best. The rest of your post reads much the same as some of your previous posts; throw something out there that has little to no ground to stand on based upon what we have read thusfar and then deny any credible evidence that others point out that may poke holes in your theory. No one is saying your theory is wrong, just that there is little to no evidence that proves it is right. There is a difference and 'You need to realize this.'

If you want to convice people of your theory, provide evidence that there was a HoA prior to TLR. Provide evidence that the world was not healthy and green, but instead has been besieged by Ruin from the beginning of time.

Well, I am only able to host 8 people so some might just have to wait for the archives. Click here for the schoolgirl outfit reading of 'The Eye of the World'.

Miyabi, you've just been Rick Rolled circa 2007.

Are we sure that only seekers become Inquisitors? It doesn't seem like a prerequisite when you consider that Marsh was originally supposed to be a smoker....

I can hook up a webcam for you while I read the book. Might be a little awkward for both of us though: me because I would feel like someone was standing over my shoulder the whole time, you because I read in my birthday suit while also eating jell-o.

*Edited to correct the awkward spelling.

I guess I just don't understand the fascination with Elend's strength compared to Vin's. Vin's strength has been noted but was never important through the books. She killed the Lord Ruler by drawing on the power of the mists, she killed Zane because she figured out how to counteract Atium, she commanded the Koloss because she figured out a secret that had been dormant for 1000 years, she figured out duralumin because she had the guts to put her life on the line every time a new mix needed testing. Any Mistborn could have burned the 11th metal, but would they figure out that The Lord Ruler was Rashek and then that he had metalminds on his arms, while struggling to stay alive? When the Inquisitor was about to kill Elend, who's strength saved his life?

She is a street smart bad arse because she grew up having to protect herself, instead of living a lifestyle of the rich and famous most Mistborn and Inquisitors enjoyed. Her physical strength pales in comparison to her inner strength, which is what you usually read the books for.

Well to answer your question, Ruin was able to alter the memorized texts within the metal minds--he did it to all of the terris council.

Kwaan could realize this only because he had an uncanny ability to memorize a sheet of paper at a glance without his metal minds.

so that answers your question but raises so much more for me....

Truly, Ookla, you are a master of your craft.

Not to point out the obvious, but you didn't answer his question at all. He already stated that Ruin was able to alter the text in metalminds. His question was what other attributes stored in metalminds could Ruin alter?

Wow.

Are we finally seeing Hemalurgical abilities or Feruchemical abilities fused with Allomancy?

First of all, helping a native English speaker learn English is never ridiculous.

...Engish...

So, did you mean English?  ;D

If the theory holds, I'm curious what degre of damage he would need to take, it seems like he took plenty from Sazed and Ham at the end of book 2....

The thoughts are considered characterization.

Yeah, I stated as much, however my post was in reference to the OPs request for 'particularly in physical appearance'.

Case in point, this is Vin's description in chapter 1:

She wore a simple white buttoned shirt and a pair of overalls. Indeed, she was hardly enticing; scrawny with a youthful face, she supposedly didn’t even look her sixteen years.

There's good news and bad news.

The good news is that there are plenty of locations you can get hold of Brandon's books even if you lent yours out (library, bookstore, etc. as well as Mistborn 1 floating around in PDF form which might be downloaded directly from TOR).

The bad news is that he doesn't go into great detail of the characters appearance, but instead delves into their thoughts and feelings while they experience the plot.

Physical descriptions are mentioned in passing fashion compared to other books, but this allows the reader to fill in the gaps. Your best desription might be of Elend once he begins wearing his white suit. I believe it talks about buttons, a cape, medals, a crown and his hair.

Ach, dudes, I'm sorry. I actually gave something away (though it might be revealed in the next sample chapter, which Brandon should be releasing anytime now...). I must be slipping.

Had a tough day at work. Yeah, I'll use that as my excuse.

No worries, I actually thought you were leading us on which this quote might just be continuing. We can't be sure if you are duping us or not anymore. But on the off chance that you weren't pulling our legs, it gives us something to speculate on until Brandon leaves us another chapter.

If Ruin is controlling all Inquisitors, then they probably all have a steel plate covering the linchpin, which makes them a very formidable opponent. The first question I would have is, is steel important in this scenario or is it just the easiest metal to acquire?

uh, what?

The steel plate, forgot about that. Yeah, how did that quote go again Ookla? I can't remember where to find it.

Shhhh, don't let him know we didn't read that yet.

I am extremely skeptical that they are different people.

That's because you are too stodgy and in love with the fact of being a friend of Brandons.  ;)
