Since I first read the first couple of books I have gotten married and had a lot of kids.  This read through, the first in a long while, I find myself empathizing a lot more with Moraine than ever before.  I think it is the herding people without being too obvious about it and then having them do what they want to anyway thing.
I love Mat in the later books, but he is too agressively obnoxious in the earlier books.
The thing I've always hated about all the characters is how no one talks to anyone else.  It would have made for a much shorter book if even a few of the characters would communicate with each other. The older I get the more this bugs me, but that could be because I am working on becoming a crotchety old woman and its a process that starts early. :P

CCGs / Re: Munchkin?

I was being cheap and looking for an actual store because i hate shipping charges. Since I live in a very small town I buy stuff whenever I go to a place with more than 1 1/2 grocery stores.
My boys want the Cow-thulu one. They are actually excited enough about it they are willing to earn the money for more games.

CCGs / Munchkin?
« on: April 29, 2009, 04:00:15 AM »
I know it is not quite the same as a collectible game, but I was wondering if anyone has opinions as to the best sets of Munchkin?  I've promised my son I will buy another set of cards but I don't know if I want to be boring and just go in order, or if there are some that are much better than others?
My son with Asperger's has really fixated on this game and it is nice that we can all enjoy it together, instead of listening to him rant about a single player game on the computer.
Also places to buy the game in Salt Lake or Las Vegas?  I am going to LV in a couple of weeks and we always end up in SL sooner or later.

Eating well is the reward for diligence in the kitchen.

Or having a slow cooker.  I like to cook, and try new things, but I have children so I can't try anything too exotic, unless I want to eat it for a week later.
We had roast beef, mashed potatoes (real ones) and lima beans for dinner.  I was creative last night and wanted something with no complaints.

Hooray!  I loved Blacker Darkness, but I despise reading on my computer.  Having that in book form would make me very happy. I would also push it onto all of my relatives so you have a potential of many sales already waiting.

Movies and TV / Re: Theres a boat load of movies coming out May 1st
« on: April 24, 2009, 11:11:49 PM »
We are going to Las Vegas on the 15th of May.  My husband for a conference, me to get away.  I am excited that there are so many movies coming out between now and then.  My small town has a little bitty theater with terrible sound.  Now I can see everything as it should be seen.  I might spend the whole time in the theater.  I lived in Vegas for a while, so I won't miss not seeing the casinos and such.

I recently realized I have been self-medicating depression with large amounts of caffeine and sugar: Dr. Pepper is my drug of choice.  I have been drinking 44 oz or more every day and loosing weight because that's all I ingest during the day.
Didn't have any this weekend and figured out what was going on.  I have  a real Dr appt this Fri.
Shaggy, looking at your schedule made me realized how much I don't miss school.  I rarely have a crazy schedule like that anymore, because as an adult, I tell people to go away when things get too much, except for my children and they are easily appeased with pizza and a new (rental) video game.
Yes, I am an evil mother, but only when my Dr. Pepper runs out.

Should taking a second wife be a legal option?  Again not sure but there's more to be said about that one. My main concern about making polygamy, polyandry, chain marriages and so forth legal would be the effect on society.  Would it strengthen our society?  Would it promote life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for individuals in our nation?  If we look at the nations on Earth that currently have legal institutions in place allowing for polygamy as examples, the simple answer would be a resounding "No."  By their example it would result in massive state-supported oppression of women along with a host of other effects anathema to a free society.

As I read this I thought of The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Heinlein.  Because the society developed without any government, but with modern sensibilities (modern being late sixties) there are a number of family groups mentioned.  Prejudices against these different family arrangements back on Earth is also brought up.
My main arguement for or against any form of marriage is the safety and well-being of the individuals within the family group.  For example, I think a woman with children living with a boyfriend is a really bad idea, because of the abuse statistics that go with that setup.
Our society is having a difficult time keeping at risk women and children safe as it is.  Anything, including changing family structures, that further erodes the protection and support the weakest members of our society has is bad.
That does not necessarily include same-sex marriage, but the examples of polygamy I've seen, including friends who were children in polygamous families, tells me that this is not a policy we should endorse as a country.

I think you cannot say right and wrong is a universal constant because universal constants are mathematical in nature.  I was a math and physics minor.  The only constants are the Planck constant, the speed of  light, the gravitational constant and similar measurable mathematical things.  To speak of anything that happens only inside a human head as a universal constant is nonsense.
Find another definition and you will have a more productive discussion.  The first step in any debate is to properly define your terms.

Rants and Stuff / Re: Cell Phone annoyance...

I used to think it was really funny and pathetic to see all the people in the grocery stores (especially men) calling home to see what kind of cereal to get.  Until I got a cell phone and my husband does it every time he goes.  I have even done it.  That easy and immediate access to information is irresistible.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Forget sex. Let's talk romance.
« on: April 17, 2009, 08:22:45 PM »
I've read some romantic fantasy (the best of these that I've and there seems to be a sense of holding back on some elements of regular fantasy to encourage the readers of romance to try and enjoy these books.  For example, making the bad guys evil sorcerers, but not too evil, just sort of nasty and unpleasant.
Then epic fantasy, especially that modeled after LoTR, has little or no romance, with female characters stock figures, if they are there at all.  This is improving however.
Perhaps if this romantic fantasy subgenre develops a bit more it will become a mixing point to enrich both genres and lead the readers of each to widen their vistas.
I say that but I wouldn't open a regular romance books unless offered a lot of money.  And then I might lie about it to anyone who knows me.

As human, with a brain full of  abstract concepts that animals and the natural world do not have, I don't see how you can have a discussion about right and wrong without bringing some form of religion, or morality, into it.  Even if you don't reference a specific belief system, most of the general ideas of how we should behave have their basis in someone's culture.  Many in the West like to refer to Eastern systems when they dislike Western morality.   I wonder if  young rebellious Buddhists reference Christianity or Islam?
That being said, I do think that as humans there is an absolute right and wrong.  There are certain things that inspire universal revulsion.  Bringing natural laws and animals into it confuses and distorts the question, because animals do not have these concepts.

We take garlic (gel cap form) in massive amounts.  It seems to help shorten the duration of a cold, and keeps everyone away so you can't spread any germs ;D

When I was in college we would save the Peeps then burn them in creative ways on the 4th of July.  Army men burn really well if you pour rubber cement on them.
