Reading Excuses / Re: Genre?
« on: November 18, 2008, 06:44:02 PM »
I normally write either fantasy or sci-fi. My current book is a futuristic fantasy....But technology-wise it's not really futuristic. Just time-wise. It's about people with powers. Kind of like super powers, but not really. They form a group that is similar to x-men, and yet not at the same time (that's the best comparison I know of)....I really like the idea but I haven't written a whole lot lately. I can guarantee I'm going to fail NaNoWriMo miserably....

Exactly. He wasn't unskilled. We can tell that from his and Vin's little battles all across Luthadel--particularly the one on Keep Hasting before Cett was there. He just relied on Atium too much and considered himself invincible. Kell, while arrogant, knew he could be beaten. That left him with room to improve.

Plus, when someone knows their life is in danger and they don't want to die, they fight back doubly hard. Zane, thinking he's invincible, would never really think he'd die. Therefore, he wouldn't get that "protect your life with all costs" ferocious fighting. That's another distinct disadvantage for him.

Oh I didn't think of that--that Vin was spiked. (Sorry, I would quote but the computer I'm on is being stupid).  That could very well have affected the situation.

When I first read that part, I thought it was a trap, too. That would explain why Vin turned around. But now I do think it was Hoid. The man was in the square Cett had told her he'd be in, plus he was whistling, which is what Cett told her he'd probably be doing....It would be way too coincidental for it to have been a trap for her. There wasn't really any way for the people in Fadrex to find out that it was Vin coming, and she was coming that night, and that Cett would've told her about that particular informant.

And I wasn't saying it would be her metals giving away his power. I mean intuition and instincts. Vin runs on both of those--more instincts, though. It could've just been that she sensed (not with allomancy, but simple skills that most humans have) that something was not quite right about the person whistling. Or it could've been Ruin whispering to her. I like that theory too.

I knew there was something I was forgetting in my argument. There was no doubt in my mind that Kell would win, yet I couldn't think of anything other than he beat the Inquisitor....Zane's ability is derived from his spike and his constant usage of Atium. He has no great skill outside of these.

In the fight against Cett, Vin didn't burn Atium at all, yet Zane did. Kell and Vin both never had a lot of Atium, yet they were able to accomplish a lot. I mean, it took Vin AND Elend to completely take down that Inquisitor in HoA. Granted, that Inquisitor was more powerful than the one Kell fought, but Kell still did it alone.

Did he have Atium? I think he did, but I can't remember exactly.

Regardless, Zane never fought Vin with Atium. If he had, he would've been killed a LOT faster and Vin wouldn't have been injured. At all. I think a Kell vs. Zane fight would be similar. Zane may be able to get a few swipes in, but most of it's gonna come from Kell. Zane would be out of his league with an opponent who also has Atium.

Or she could've sensed that he had more power than a man like him should...Assuming he IS the same guy, he's got to have some pretty sweet magic.

That's one of the main reasons I didn't go with Feruchemy. It's cool, but you have to keep up with the storing. I would forget--no doubt in my mind. Or I wouldn't store enough.

And that's also a good point about the Awakening--it is very strict. It's cool that it clearly has bounds, because it's a lot easier to understand as a reader. Yet to imagine having it....Not all commands work. You lose Breath on commands that don't work, if you're in a fight and you're unable to get them back. It would be cool to test to discover more commands, but in a fight, Allomancy is more practical. Both require precision, yet Allomancy is simpler in theory. And not everyone can be an Allomancer, whereas anyone can be an Awakener if they know the right commands (and have the Breath).

And I really need to finish Elantris. I started it last year, but then I went home and left my book for my dad to read and I still haven't finished it....Only got three chapters in, too. That first Hrathin chapter slowed me down....

I did that with the first page, and part of the second, too. And then I got bored with it (which takes a lot of work, since I was bored enough to do it in the first place....). It never did make the posts appear, even though I posted in the thread. Huh.

Question: Does Zane have his spike?

The answer doesn't really change my opinion, because I'm going with Kell. Zane's really good, but Kell showed just how proficient he is in his battle with the Inquisitor. Zane's good, but I don't think he's as good as an Inquisitor--not saying he couldn't beat one though. We obviously don't know if he could or not.

Yeah. So my vote goes for Kell.

True. And yet, if he revealed just a LITTLE bit more information, this discussion could blow to all new proportions. That could be fun.

No, when I said it's sad he's RAFO-ing everything now, I didn't mean it would be better if he just told us straight up every mystery about Hoid. That would be lame. There's a reason reading is so much fun....

And perhaps shadowkiller is onto something. An acronym is a plausible explanation. I like the first one--Hero of Infinite Dimensions. Has a nice ring to it.

However, if I had to choose, I would definitely choose being both an Allomancer and a Feruchemist.  That's just awesome.

So something like what Brandon mentioned for the next trilogy? I'm pretty sure he mentioned that Allomancy would be down to just Mistings, and that Feruchemy would've become something similar to Mistings, and it would be possible for a person to have access to one power from each system.....Or are you referring to the Lord Ruler?

Either way, it would be pretty cool....And now that I've finished Warbreaker, I have to say that I still go for Allomancy. Awakening is AWESOME, but it just doesn't beat the subtly and sweetness that is Allomancy. Personal opinion.

It's also quite possible we haven't met Austre's opposition, assuming Austre IS a Shard. Since Austre is the God of Idris, maybe it's opposition is the God of Kuth and Huth--since that's where Vasher's headed at the end. Or I could be completely wrong.

I have hope that all the things we see as let downs right now are just leading to something bigger and more exciting at season's end.

That's what I'm hoping, too. It could turn into a false hope, but oh well. I've loved this show since before it aired, and I want to see where it goes. Even if that's into the gutter....Plus I want to know what Sylar's going to do to Daddy Pettrelli. And how Pete's gonna deal with his loss of powers.

Does anyone remember why Vin didn't want to go meet Hoid in Hero of Ages?

This is what it says in the book:
"She soon located a figure that wasn't sleeping like the others, but sitting quietly in the light ashfall. Her ears picked out a faint sound. The man was humming to himself, as the instructions said that he might be doing.
Vin hesitated.
She couldn't decide what it was, but something bothered her about the situation. It wasn't right. She didn't stop to think, she simply turned and jumped away." (p. 187 US Hardcover)

So basically, it was her instincts. Makes me wonder why. I'm curious what would've happened if she had've met with him....

And I'm not sure what to think about him. I think it would be REALLY interesting if they were the same person...But I almost don't see how they could be, seeing as they're all on different planets....unless he DOES have mad planet-hopping skills, as others have suggested.....It's sad Brandon RAFO's all questions on Hoid now.

Actually, that's not a bad idea--David Wenham and Sean Bean. I already think Sean Bean's a pretty good pick for Marsh...When I first saw your suggestion, I wasn't sure, but now when I think about Faramir being Kell. I rather like that. For some reason....I really liked Faramir. He rocked (in the books). Kell rocks too, so Wenham works.
