Depending on your dialect, they're not slant rhymes; the vowels and end consonants are identical (if you shift a "j" the natural way across syllable boundaries) and the scansion matches. A slant rhyme requires different vowels and/or consonants.

They're not rhymes at all in my dialect because the number of syllables is different, but "foreign" and "oranger" may both also vary in vowel pronunciation according to dialect, which would make them slant rhymes in those dialects. Dictionary.com lists the rhyming pronunciations first for both words though.

or an ger an i ums
for eign er cran i ums

The an and eign syllables might have very very slight differences in the vowel sound, but there is no other problem with the rhyme.

Of course, people are always saying that there's no word that rhymes with orange, not that you can't use orange as part of a rhyming phrase, but hte rhyme Ook gave is still very, very clever, imo.

I think because the difference between -an- and -eign- in those words is considerably less noticeable than the "ange" and "ins" in my couplet. Not to be high on myself, but I think that my couplet is still pretty clever, and Fells arguing about it only confirms my ssuspicions.

In my dialect there is no difference in vowel sounds at all--the only discrepancy between the words is the c in craniums, but since it's embedded in a very long multi-syllabic rhyme, and since it comes at the beginning of a sound instead of the end, it doesn't corrupt the rhyme.

Orange and florins, on the other hand, tried to rhyme a "j" sound with a "z" sound, both at the strongest position at the end of the word. There's no comparison.

and see, the vowel is MUCH more important than the consonant, esp when the consonants are so similar.

Consonants at the end of a sound, though, simply cannot be different. Thus I decree.

I love how rational this argument has become.

My boredom conquered my rationality long ago. How long can I be expected to argue about whether or not bat rhymes with bad? It's getting old. I'd much rather hear something cool, like oranger craniums/foreign geraniums. Five points for Ookla.

I like the torn geraniums rhyme better than the foreign geraniums one, but I approve all around.

So, for thursday I have to write a Dickisonian Sestina about an iron-wrought fence using the finnish word Steinfjord. Yeah, I picked all that out of a box and a book of pictures with finnish text. This should be fun.
