It's possible he didn't shoot himself.  Maybe that flash base landed right on him and did some damage and he bled to death.  The heat those things get off are enough to open skin...

But more than likely, yes he shot himself.

Considering he has two holes in his head consistant with the entry and exit of a .50 calibur slug, and a .50 calibur handgun was found on the floor of the cab when they cut through the armor plating to get to him, Id have to say that he most certainly shot himself.
