War of the Worlds

Has anyone seen the advertisement for this remake?  It's set to release I believe it was June 29th?  Tom Cruise is one of the headliners in it.  Also it is a Speilberg production which means that it could have promise.  :o

I have to admit, Spielburg does not direct bad movies. Sometimes his movies are just mediocre, but they are almost never flat-out bad. He seems to have a good grasp of plotting and story-telling. He also doesn't kill stories by over-editing them.

And Tom Cruise is a very solid actor.

The problem both Spielburg and Cruise have is that any movie they make, seems like a Spielburg or Cruise movie. So hence, you can kind of get a very hum-drum feeling from watching one of their movies, especially if you just watched another one of their movies.

Cruise much more so than Spielburg, but yes. I expect it to be good without being incredible.

I expect it will be somewhat decent and worth seeing, but I also expect it to be a blasphemy to the book, like how Starship Troopers was great but had nothing to do with the book.

Well I never liked the book (war of the worlds) so it can't lose much from me.

ok, what about A.I.? That movie was... to put it bluntly, stupid. And I am an avid fan of those that dislike Cruise. So, I have no regrets about this one. To arms!

I didn't think A.I. was that stupid, though admittedly I am a little biased toward the movie.

It was very surreal.  It didn't try to be a particularly normal movie, which is fine because there are lots of normal movies out there.  Ther are parts of it I don't like, and I've only seen it three or so times, but it's not a bad movie.

Wait, and was that related to Tom Cruise?  I don't like him at all.  Might have liked Minority Report without him in it.

The problem is, I love the original setting. Mostly when the modernise things the magic is gone for me. I don't know whether to risk being disappointed or not ...

i'm kinda not the biggest fan of spielberg. His work is always solid, but not always interesting.

I have to go with Gemm on AI, though. On first seeing it I thought it was ok, but the more I thought about it, the more problems it had. I can't look at the plot at all without seeing major problems. I wish he hadn't made the movie the way he did, it had such potential.

'Cause he's so funny, or 'cause even in creepy-robot-plastic mode Jude Law is kind of cute?

My favorite parts were of that goffey teddy bear talking and stuff, and then when I realized that 3d-ed professor was voiced by Robin Williams. After I saw that part I watched with intent to see if there was more Robin. But alas, I was let down.
