Brandon Sanderson / Re: Atium Crystals *Minor Spoilers*
« on: October 13, 2010, 09:02:16 AM »
The actual answer is that only steel or iron burning causes any problem.

I first I thought that was the answer, but that quote from Czanos implies otherwise. Was this just an oversight?

On actually getting metals, it is possible that Mare could pick up trace metals. I assume this is how Kelsier defeated the guards the night he snapped. Otherwise, without metals, e.g. pewter, he wouldn't have had the strength to escape.

Perhaps the Parshendi bring the void by accident? Or, are chased by the void? Perhaps the parshendi "migrated" to Roshar, and are being chased by "the void", much like a predator following a migratory animal.
This would explain their behaviour in wanting to bring the Alethi  out to play war with them. Get the Alethi who have some twenty or so shardbearers into a position where they must fight "the void". Perhaps Taravangian understands this, and doesn't want Dalinar to unite the Alethi/crush the Parshendi because they need the Parshendi as allies in the upcoming war.

Sorry but this sounds really really similar to Jim Butcher's Codex Alera books.

Books / Re: Looking for "political" epic Fantasy
« on: October 12, 2010, 02:27:54 PM »
I also like political fantasy. Unfortunately its hardly ever done, and it never really takes a preference. Most of Brandon's books include politics - Elantris, Warbreaker, Misborn - but there not the major plots.

I am working on an idea for a story at the moment which is based on a huge parliament like government called the Court, where only powerful magicians are given seats. There are lots and lots of different parties, each one trying to fight for coalitions and superiority. However, it is still a work in progress.  :(

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Just finished the Way of Kings *SPOILERS*

I just loved it when he said:
Quote

"They won't come, ELhokar...They're my men, and I left them with orders not to enter - or let anyone else enter - no matter what they heard. Even if that included pleas for help from you."
and again:
Quote
"I trained them. I placed them there. They've always been loyal to me."
When I read that, I was like, this guy demands respect. He knows how to lead men, and take charge. He has power.

Especially at the beginning you want a fast pace. Short sentences are a start. Short paragraphs also work. Also, take this line here:
Quote
dank, smelly back alley
It comes from the first sentence. You probably only need one adjective here, like 'dank alley'. Creating long lists of adjectives slows down the pace.

Other than that, and what has been echoed above, I really enjoy reading this. I find the worldbuilding quite interesting. I can see that the slang and social structure has been well thought out. Unfortunately a major problem with fantasy books is that you need to explain everything that you have made up, but you don't want to spend time just sitting and listing things. I struggle with this a lot. But don't worry about this now. Get a rough draft out, then worry about cleaning it up and moving things around.

Brandon Sanderson / Atium Crystals *Minor Spoilers*
« on: October 12, 2010, 12:06:54 PM »
Something has been bugging me.

If allomancy can shatter the atium crystals, why was Mare, a tineye sent to the Pits. Surely the Lord Ruler wouldn't risk destroying the crystals on the off chance that she got her hands on some tin.

Well, eventually that's kinda what he did.

Lol, he took to long. But at least he did it right.  ;)

I raise the question, what if the person in the Dalinar's visions is not the Almighty, but someone pretending to be him (e.g. Odium or the B guy - can't remember his name)?

Anyway, great theory ryos. Missed it completely (should pay attention to chapter headings more often  :-[) I think there is definitely something there.

With the Elisha thing, that could be a deliberate connection made by Brandon (just like Elantris (the city) = Atlantis), or he could be completely oblivious of it (like who he use to call Elantris (the book this time, not the city) THE SPIRIT OF ADONIS)

If Dalinar was Greek, he would of just hit Elhokar on head with the back of his hand and said: "You do stupid thing. You listen to me."

Brandon Sanderson / Re: *Spoilers* General Shard List

Brandon said somewhere that Odium did not cause the Reod, at least not directly, and I'm inclined to take him at face value.  I think the Reod was caused by Skai, disrupting Harmony and breaking the Elantrian's tie with the land and the Dor as part of a power play against Aona, and Odium merely seized on that opportunity to take Aona and Skai out.

Interesting. Odium probably tipped the scale to allow Skai to take out Aona, then while Skai was occupied to him/her out.

There is always that saying that in every story there is a grain of truth.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Inside Cover Artwork in WoK
« on: October 12, 2010, 06:09:55 AM »
This is all really good.  Something that should be pointed out, however, is that the two center glyphs on the Shadesmar side are not connected to any of the small glyphs like their counterparts on the opposite side.

Note that while they are not directly collected, but those 4 glyphs are highlighted by some sort of lightning/blue fire that is behind it. (I don't really know how to explain it) Those 4 glyphs seem to be connected to the 2 herald glyphs by the red gem behind it.

I really don't see the Herald inverse pictures, but that might be just be.

I just read Ch 2, and i was excited. I like the imagery. Do you think you could send me the prologue and first chapter, I would like to read it, just to set the scene in my mind?

The one part I wasn't a fan of was:
Quote
From a bird’s perspective she is shaped not unlike a broad crescent.

The imagery was good, but I hate when someone uses the word's "from a bird's perspective". Just too cliched. However I love the personification of the island. This however is my personal view, and others may like its use, i dunno.
