Title: War of the Ring
Post by: Mr_Pleasington on November 05, 2004, 01:01:09 AM
Holy Crap.

I just picked up War for the Ring because I saw the full game on display in all of its glory at the gaming store.  I'm so weak willed...

This thing is a monster.

I'll give more info once I actually read the rules

That's going to take some time.  You hae no idea how much optom school costs, but I bet you'd be shocked. So it will take some time to pay it off.

Then I'll be comfortable, not rich.

You will be rich if you start selling illegal organs to China.

I doubt I'd be surprised. I know it's an extremely costly endeavor. But you're talking to a guy who has a degree in the liberal arts. You're ALREADY rich compared to that.

We'll start with the ones that we don't want to mention by name. Those are probably illegal. at least in public.

Just sat down for my first game of War of the Ring vs. a friend of mine.  I played Free People and he played Shadow.

As expected, there is a LOT to do in this game.  It's a little overwhelming at times.

We're about 8 or 9 turns in after a couple of hours play (interupted by lots of rule look ups) and the going has been rough for the FP.  Since you have to activate and muster the different nations to war it is really difficult to mount a defense against the initial assaults.  It's even harder considering you need to use actions to move the Fellowship (which I'm not doing enough as they're still in Moria).

Some highlights:

- In Rivendell, as the Fellowship set out, Aragorn went out on his own to travel north in an attempt to bring other Rangers into battle.  He was successful in activating them, but they've been slow to muster and have yet to declare war.  Thankfully, he also carried the Book of Mazarbul (sp) which he delivered to Erebor.  The Dwarves were enraged by it and immediately declared war.

-Saruman revealed himself as a traitor, activating Rohan, and immediately began pumping out insane amounts of orcs.  Gandal soon revealed himself as the White though and convinced the Ents to attack Orthanc.  The carnage left several orcs dead along with their traitorous master, Saruman.

-From almost he beginning of the game, Lorien was under siege from Dol Guldur.  The orc horde was soon joined by three Nazgul and the forest home of the Elves fell to Shadow.  A  few turns later Aragorn, leading a dwarven warhost, smashed the remaining orcs and drove the Ringwraiths away.  So now the Dwarves control the Elven settlement...

Both of us are having a blast.  This was a great investment!

fantasy flight games

Here's the link to Boardgame Geek, though my review here is submitted and should be up this week (I imagine):  http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/9609

Be wary of how cool the pics on the main page are...someone took the time to paint the figs well.

That rocks. Aragorn leading a warhost of dwarfs.

So wait, Dr. P, are you playing this game with your fiancee`e`ee? And that board is humungous!

And, another question, the peices come in plain colors. To add more flavor you'd have to paint them yourself?

No, not playing with my fiance...she likes simpler games like Heroscape, Settlers, and Chez Geek. I'm playing with my good friend and recent roomate.

Here's an update on our game, by the way:
As an update, we played a few more rounds tonight and we're both very pleased at the gameplay.  The advantage seems to keep tottering back and forth.  Currently, Aragorn has left the dwarven forces in Rohan and rallied The North to war (finally) in Bree.  A huge host, including three Nazgul,  has left its trek towards Rivendell to again assault Lorien which is defended by a handful of gruff Dwarves.  While this was going on, the Black Gate opened and spewed forth a vast host which fell upon Minis Tirith.  The army, led by The Witch King himself, was first turned back by the stalwart defenders of Gondor, but the tables turned when reinforcements arrived.  Minis Tirith is now a smoking ruin under the rule of The Witch King.  The White Tree has burned.  The remainder of the Gondorian forces rally in Pelargir, but their numbers are few.

Back in the north, the Elves finally leave Rivendell to help break The Second Siege of Lorien, with Aragorn recruiting Northmen to help the cause.  Many Northmen are on the defensive however as Southrons have encroached on Erebor and the Woodland realms.

Meanwhile, the standoff in Rohan remains still as Gandalf holds the line against the last remants of Saruman's forces.  The Fellowship finally left Moria and arrived in Lorien just before The Second Siege began.  With all the Nazgul about, they've bogged down yet again.

Yay!.
Sounds horribly complex. Which, of course, means I'd love it. Adding it to the birthday/Christmas list.

If I could afford it, and have some kind of people and oppurtunity to play this with, I'd love it. Now I'm irritated I can't.

It is pretty horribly complex.  Not because the rules themselves are difficult, but because there is no integration.  Virtually every action has its own specific rule that applies only to that action.  So there's a lot to know, you can't just memorize generalities.
