Writing Group / Re: Weaknesses
« on: August 02, 2010, 12:59:13 AM »
Ah, Ruthie I'd say I'm just the opposite from you.  My weakness is over analyzing my writing, its sentence structure,  details, etc.  I get caught up on making one scene that I completely fall off track on the bigger picture.  This is probably why it takes me forever and a day to finish anything.

Personally, I look at you, and consider your weakness as a definite strength! A lot of times too many details bog down the story and are unnecessary.  I really admire the ability of an author to just get completely wrapped up in their tale.  It sounds like your stories would be fun, fast paced reading!  I'd read that any day over meticulous and droning description of a city for example.  In my opinion, it's better to rough out the details of landscape through the character's interaction with it.  Describe it as they would see it.  In that way you can add dimension to your world through the varied perspectives of your characters (that is if you are using multiple POVs).

On the note of Orson Scott Card, I think that it was intentional on his part to leave the descriptions as bare as possible.  He trusts the reader's imagination to fill in the blanks of the tangible detail, and instead focuses his attention on personalities of his characters.  I may not know the character's eye color, but I know what drives them and at the end of the day, I think that's a sign of a stronger author.

So yeah, obviously I haven't read any of your work, but it sounds like you have a love for writing.  I'd say just keep writing with what is natural for you, and then, when you go back to do the second draft add detail only where you think it is necessary.  If you go overboard, you might lose that original flow you started with.  I don't know, what do you think?

You want ruthless, watch Hard Candy..

Hard Candy...that's right, I forgot that Ellen Page was the main girl in that movie.  I saw that before I was really familiar with her as an actress.  Well I got to say, Comatose, that changes my opinion entirely.  Thanks!

On the Terrismen subject, I agree with Eerongal completely and for the same reasons.  A darker skinned person in a northern climate will have a harder time absorbing Vitamin D.  Less Vitamin D means less calcium, which can lead to bone disease such as rickets.  With this determinate it is unlikely that a dark skinned person would be selected for the type of northern region described in the book.  Plus the Lord Ruler is described as being "Handsome, with jet black hair and pale skin, the Lord Ruler was tall, thin, and confident."

I am so horrifyingly confused.

Ha yeah, not my idea. I don't think my brain can even go to those places.  It comes from some beyond disturbing movie trailer I saw, where a retired surgeon decides he wants to connect people by their gastric system to create a...human centipede.   Got a link to the trailer if you wish to see it.

So you know, I'm not saying this is movie magic.  ugh.

Ellen Page definitely came into mind for Vin.  She is a very talented actress, especially note An American Crime (extremely creepy movie).  But I have reservations in the more physical part of the role.  I saw whip it and despite the efforts to make her seem ruthless, she kind of looks awkward.  Vin is supposed to lithe and agile.  Ah, but maybe I'm being to picky?

Yeah Jensen Ackles character from Supernatural has a lot of similarities, in my opinion, to Kelsier.  I was trying to find a clip to exemplify this on youtube, but its hard to narrow down a character to one clip, especially if you haven't seen the show.

Anyway, this one goofy, but you get to see the guy in action. :D

I really like the idea of Paul Bettany as Sazed (he's got a great ability to sort of become the role, plus I loved him in Master and Commander).

Okay so this may seem a bit crazy but I think I have the perfect Kelsier.  I seen posts for Robert Downey Jr., Nathon Fillion, etc. but I think Jensen Ackles http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0010075/ would be a great fit.  Seriously underrated.   What do you guys think?
