First Person pov

Ok, I need a group effort here.

Has there ever been a good book, written in first person that was successfully translated into a movie?

Hmm. That's a very good question. Ella Enchanted was in 1st person, and look what they did to that.

I can't think of anything off the top of my head, but I'll think about it more when I'm not so tired.

I'm pretty sure that Dickens did a couple of first person books, and they worked out pretty well as movies.

Dracula--pick any adaptation.  (Depends on whether or not you call them *good* thought.)

I also think there was a good chance that The Maltese Falcon was first person in novel form--a lot of those Hardboileds were.  I haven't read it, though.

Sherlock Holmes stories are all first person, right?

Yes. From Watson's POV.

This isn't good, but Where the Red Fern Grows was in first person. I never saw the movie though.

No, Maltese falcon was not.  I don't think Hammett did first person.  Raymond Chandler and Ross MacDonald both did first person though.  (I studied detective novels this last fall).   I haven't seen movies of any of their novels though.

Sminja knows that Great Expectations is written in first person, and he thinks it has been adapted into movie form many times. He doesn't know if they are any good or not, though...

That is true.  Good for Dickens.

Now, first-person fantasy books that turned into successful movies...well, there just aren't that many fantasy books that have made successful movies in the first place.

Princess bride had some first-person sections.  However, they didn't end up in the movie.  (They were, oddly, replaced by the grandfather-grandson sections, which might have been in first-person if they were in the book.)

See now that thing with the grandfather narrating worked so well that I'm sure it could never be duplicated.  Which is sad, since a first person story needs the strong narrator to keep its character.

There are a number of first-person novels that have been made into movies, but doesn't it get kind of relative when you also add that it has to be a good book and successfully translated.  You could always look up a list of 1st person novels and then write down the ones that were made into movies, you should be able to get a few dozen in no time.
