I was flipping through channels and I turned to my favorite channel MTV...then my dad walked by and said "god I don't know why so many kids like MTV whats so great about it...its just shows with young people who are willing to exploit themselves on tv" I disagree with him greatly but I really would like to know why young people like mtv so much because there are other "young adult shows" out there but MTV seems to be the most famous.

I think MTV has always been a waste of time. Even back when the name was an accurate description of what they did.

I like music videos. Consequently, I hate MTV. Not only do they not show music videos, but they completely ignore the fact that they're *supposed* to show music videos. Grrr.

I grew up with MTV on a good four or five hours every day.  It was great 'background' TV.

And then there was Bevis and Butthead--which, coincidentally, we watched on MTV2 the other night.  Apparently, it doesn't play videos either.

No, they just changed MTV2 from being a video channel to another MTV channel.

I agree with MasterShake's dad, there's noting on MTV now but morons willing to make a fool out of themselfs on TV.

MTV may be famious, but it's not the most watched, it's only had one show in the past 10 years (Osbornes) that have ever broken in to the top 25 cable shows.  And more teenages watch the main networks then MTV buy a significant amount.

MTV is evil and is a tool of the devil to slowly destroy and corrupt our youth.

MTV is also a tool of THE MAN to intellectually bludegeon our youth into stupid, mindless consumers don't think for themselves and live to buy useless things they do not need.

MTV adopted rock 'n' roll, the way we used to STICK IT TO THE MAN, and detsroyed it. MTV made Rock and roll THE MAN. Now, the only way we can STICK IT TO THE MAN is to play CHICAGO STYLE JAZZ, and to play it LOUD!

MasterShake cannot spell. MasterShake watches MTV. I leave the connection as an exercise to the reader.

MasterShake's father would rather he didn't watch it. MasterShake's father is a good man, and probably a good parent.

The Jam Has spoken. The Jam is a loving mod (four keys from god) and he loves his forum and his forumers. The Jam decrees that MTV is a waste of time. The Jam is speaking in third person to Stick it to the man. The Jam does not like the man. The Jam is perhaps one of the only people who understand that the man is slowly destroying us. It is up to The Jam to bring the truth of The Man to the masses. The Jam has spoken.

It's not just MTV, it's TV in general.  Total waste of time.  Our culture treats it like it's worthwhile in and of itself, instead of just a way to be comfortably, mindlessly entertained.

I lay the decline of logical thought (or any thought at all for that matter) in our culture squarely at the feet of the idiot box.

Well we don't have any fuctional TV reception but we've decided to take the $30-40/month we'd pay for cable, and buy a TV show box set we want each month. Does that still count?

Back when I worked for a fitness company I read a lot of fitness research, and one of the cool bits of trivia I found is that watching TV is literally the most physically debilitating pasttime in America. Even sitting and staring at a wall, believe it or not, is more active and has less of a negative effect on your body.

Not nearly as bad as sitting down no matter what's on and vegging.

You see, you have at least made a conscious choice about what to watch instead of being spoonfed and frankly, one boxed set a month is not very much TV at all.

What have you chosen so far?

Well we have Gargolyes, and the first two seasons of Dukes of Hazzard.  Two seasons of Stargate SG-1.  There are a few things on our list to get - Macgyver, Night Rider, Greatest American Hero, (seeing any 80's theme?)  then Pretender and Newsradio come out later this year, so we've got it planned out for a few months.

What about Sports Night? I saw that the entire series is in a box DVD set now. Which rocks. I really liked that show and was saddened immensely when it was canceled.
