What are your favorite holiday elements?
Let me know if I've missed something.
-
How about Christmas Cake?
I always thought it was just a strange Japanese pseudo-Western thing like White Day, but apparently non-Japanese Christmas Cakes really do exist in the UK, Ireland, and other such countries (plus the Philippines).
...Well, there is fruitcake in the US which has holiday connotations, but it's never called Christmas Cake.
-
Snow flakes? I see snowmen on the list but we don't really get snow where I'm at so that's out for me. But having Snow on or around Christmas is always a big deal down here. So the symbol is heavily present.
-
Added snowflakes and holiday food.
Yule logs are popular in some places, etc.
For me, Christmas always has been cookie season. It's a family thing. This year, lacking my grandmother, we still managed to make English Shortbreads, Filled Cookies (in raisin, strawberry, peach, apricot, and marmalade flavors), brownies, and caramel (it counts). Oh, and caramel ice cream (doesn't really count, but still yummy).

What about gifts and presents?
It's not the first thing that comes to mind, but I do always remember the small warehouse of presents my family would open on Christmas morning and into the afternoon. (We don't actually give each other a lot of gifts on Christmas, it's just a large family.)
-
I thought yule logs were a kind of firewood.

I thought yule logs were a kind of firewood.
It is both wood and a cake.

So there really is no difference between a "yule log" and a regular old peice of wood, right? It's just a log that you burn to celebrate Christmas/holidays? And i agree with 42 about the presents, my family is religious too, but we give each other quite a few gifts, not to mention my aunts/uncles

Hmm...
Food. Gingerbread men is key to good holiday fun.
I can't really add snow, since it usually always snows near Christmas and it's just taken for granted come the holiday season. :D
-
Snowmen!
"We can name him Bob, or we can name him Beowulf! Snowman!"
-
Well it's kind of more of a christmas survey than a holiday survey….just pointing that out.
-
I like Penguins for Christmas iconery. :)
I wouldn't say santa, because I don't really like most of the santas that I've seen. What I like are the mysterious, tall, skinny santas. The fat ones just smack too much of comercialism. :)
-
I was in Arizona once and there was a Santa there and it was hysterical because he was completely drunk and practically tripping over his toes.

Just in the street? or was the mall santa drunk? :D
-
Hehe but no he was in a hotel. :P He probably had a rather late Christmas Eve…. ;D
-
ha... in Seattle, there is a group of people that go around dressed like Santa, getting drunk and singing songs like "It's the most wonderful time for a beer" every holiday season
on another note, isn't it a little late to be posting in this thread?
-
I guess…but who cares? there are these people i've seen who leave their christmas lights on till like August
-
And the fact that Christ wasn't born on the 25th kind of makes limiting the celebrations to that day kind of moot :)
-
True. But even besides the fact that leaving your Christmas lights on nearly year round is a tremendous waste of energy, it's pretty god damn annoying, too.
-
Also true. So very, very true.

Shaggy, please re-read the Forum FAQ (you too, Hoid, though your post was less offensive).
Don't clog the "recent posts" feed with meaningless, short posts.
-
OK, jeez, I deleted it. Everything OK now?
I resent that. Maybe there meaningless to you, but not to me. Please be more considerate to other's feelings and try to take more care not to offend anybody.
-
Sometimes we can be pretty mean here. It's not because we're trying to offend, but simply because we've discovered that being mean (to a limited extent) is actually really effective at keeping the forum healthy. The FAQ even mentions that if you aren't willing to abide by certain expectations, you can expect to be taunted mercilessly. Unfortunately, most of the mean mods (such as Skar and SE) aren't as active on this forum as they used to be, and so some of the rest of us have to step up to the plate.
-
It's not as much mean as inconsiderate. I think there's a difference. And since being inconsiderate isn't mentioned in the FAQ, perhaps you should consider trying to be more considerate.
-
I'll consider it. ;D
-
For some reason, I highly doubt that.
-
...and you missed the pun. Such a shame.
-
Actually, I didn't miss the pun. I simply decided to ignore it.
-
Just as bad. The whole point of my response was that pun.
-
Wow, I sense some hipocrasy... no offense, it's just that you tell us to not post short and meaningless posts, and then you two start a short and meaningless post chain. Once again, I dont mean to be offensive.
-
No, I appreciate your honesty and frankness. We have always had more tolerance for clever quips and the like, but you do have a point. I apologize.
-
Well…I don't think they were meaningless. We were discussing the point of an (admittedly short and meaningless) post. What's wrong with that? (That is a rhetorical question, so don't answer it.)
-
I think it's about time to lock this thread.
