Reported in Variety today. The film's set to come out in fall 2008. He'll also help write it.
Daily Variety said the action would center on the early days of "Star Trek" characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer-space mission.
Discuss.

continuity editor hell!
It's like Enterprise, only not as far back in the past.
-
Since when has the Star Trek been interested in continuity? You just have someone travel back in time and change whatever you don't like! ;D
...Who will they cast? This isn't going to be as bad as dumb and dumberer is it?
-
For me the thing to get excited/talk about isn't the plot so much as the director. JJ's the guy who did Lost, Alias, and now has directed Mission Impossible 3 (which I'm hearing great things about). I think this could be a really good "restart" to the films, which have fizzled of late.
-
eek.
And all I wanted was a DS9 movie. Odo Returns! or something. *sigh*
-
While I'm excited to have someone as talented as Abrams take the helm of the movie, I think it's a big mistake to revisit the origins of the series. Getting new actors to play Kirk and Spock will make it feel weird. Plus haven't we had enough of those characters anyway?
-
Clearly not I suppose.... I wonder if it will looked at as a cheap imitaion of the Star Wars prequels.
.....But better. ;)
-
That dosn't take much...

It could sink or swim. They write some pretty good Star Trek novels with the original characters. If they cast Kirk and Spock well, I will probably go see it. I don't want to watch Shatner and Nimoy get any older.
-
Personally the only way I'll see it is if they actually have Shatner and Nemoy as Kirk and Spock, you can do lots of things with CG and Makeup.
-
If a new Star Trek movie without Shatner wasn't bad enough now the rumors are spreading that everyone's favorite thespian Ben Affleck will be case as Captain Kirk.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
AHAHAHAHAHAHHAAA
Man, that's funny.
-
Ben Afflek? Please excuse me...
I think I'm going to be ill....
-
and here's the kicker, Mat Damon is gonna play spock.
-
I don't think that's funny.
*Skar weeps into his hands
-
JJ Abrams has been replaced by Kevin Smith and Gus Van Sant...!!!! ;)
-
see, now you're describing a Star Trek prequel I'd actually WATCH.
-
You know I'm sure Jay and Silent Bob always wanted to meet Kirk and Spock. Well Silent Bob, probably, though maybe Jay will teach a young James T. Kirk how to pick up the alien babes.
-
"Silent Bob is an instrument of god?!"
"No, but the driver is because Cardinal Glick is the kind of jerk who would bless his clubs for a better game."

I know this is a little necromantic (is that a word), but I thought I'd bring up the fact that this film now has a release date: December 25, 2008. So it still seems to be on track, for better or worse. I still think it could be an excellent reboot to the series, and it looks like fans will either have a present or coal in their stockings for Christmas. Seems like an odd day to release it--why not right before? Though I guess Christmas is on a Thursday that year, so maybe it's the ideal time.
