I was kidding.   ;D

Ok, if we're talking about scholarly use rather than the alleged age of the source material, then I get it. In that case I think Dinotopia definitely applies, because it's complete with plant samples and other pseudo-scientific bits of information about the island. Of course, Dinotopia is obviously going for a Victorian sort of feel, so that could explain it--their throwback to the Victorian
story included a throwback to the Victorian method of storytelling.

As a sidenote: Dinotopia contains the line "Don't pee in the bath."  At the time I read this, I was completely horrified by that vulgarity.  That was a long, long time ago.

Karen and I saw this book in the airport bookstore that's this big coffetable-type Egyptology book that has collections of letters and notes and stuff supposedly collected from someone connected with some kind of mummy's curse or something like that. It's all fake. But the book is pretty cool.

Back when I worked at the library there was a book that purported to be a computer-generated romance novel based on the writing style of some popular novelist who had died suddenly.
All Saiyuki fans should check out Dazzle! Emotionally wrenching action-adventure and quirky humor! (At least read chapter 6 and tell me if you're not hooked.) Volume 10 out now!

Actually, Egyptology is published by the same publisher, Candlewick. And come to think of it, they did one like that on fairies, too, in which a photographer made little fairy clothes out of leaves and such. Beautiful book, actually.

I have a book called Dragonology that's sort of like that.  I wonder if it's by them too.

Yes, it is. It's kind of in their ... I wouldn't say toy book line, so much as fun books. They have a really good design department, so they have fun with those kinds of books, I think.

It's a really awesome book--it's got scales and pop-up things and such.  Not the sort of thing I could justify spending money on, but it was a great christmas gift.

My grandma said that the best gift is something that the person wants but would never spend money on themselves. I try to remember that when I go shopping.
