Role-Playing Games / Re: Tracy Hickman's rant
« on: September 16, 2002, 01:32:07 PM »
heh. about the whole parents checkign what their children buy - if they dont do it with films and video games, do you think that they are gonna do it with what look to be textbooks? and remember that children often dont want to share info - i hate it when my parents try to control my every move and purchase.
i do agree with fell about the inappropriateness of sending out excerpts tho.

oh BTW fell. there is a strong argument for the linking of RPGs to tabletop. you play the most evil armies in tabletop. just a thought.

i would like to note here that "evil" is a very nebulous term. a drug dealer - evil. someone who murders that dealer to prevent drugs from getting to their children - evil. murder = evil. see what i mean? if a spy corrupts and subverts the population of a town to allow an invading army to destroy said town, that is also "evil".  if we were to look at it from a certain perspective, all PC's in DnD are responsible for murder, theft, handling of stolen goods, looting the dead, breaking and entering. it all rests upon a certain fact - that heros in fantasy often make their own definition of what is good - just as we all do. i feel that it is good if a person who sexually assaulted and killed young children is executed, but left wing people feel that it is evil.

out of interest, where would everyone say that vampire : masquerade and D20 cthulu fit in here? both are intended for mature audiences yet there is nothing stopping young people from buying them.

this is why i make certain not to discuss tabletop, video games or roleplaying games with highly religious people. it just isnt worth the effort.

you guys wont know about this, but last year 8 british tourists were put in jail for photographing some planes. they were planespotters and the planes were civilian.  there was a big outcry in britain - did nothing. the greek dont give a flying f*** about the international community by the looks of it. besides, nobody said they were particularly bright. all their stuff happened millenia ago, and they went for sciences and philsophy - not the most common sense of subjects are they? besides, they were all gay. believe me on this one. small boys and old men went along well together in ancient greece.

this is an old penny arcade strip about War3 adverts. good fun.
oh and saying that you dont like a game due to losing online is a bit silly.your going to get that in any game until you get good (since the 12 yr olds are generally crap) so just practice and then the problem will disappear.

grrr. so here i am, in the process of upgrading my neolithic PC, and i find £25 left over. ho! thinks i. thats enough to get myself a computer game from amazon. so, after much umming and ahhing i go for GTA III, despite the immense temptation of morrowind. then i see promethiuses review. doh! the sequel to the game that got me into RTS's, and that cemented my computer addiction (it could have gone either way before the orcs marched onto my screen). the fun me and my friends had, playing short skirmish games against the computer while giving each other dodgy tactical advice. i remember that i was so horrendiusly bad at RTS's that i just level skipped through the levels in order to see the end FMV. mind you thats what i did 4 months ago with starcraft.
questions for you promethius :
1) what are the animations like? how do the graphics look when moving? the piccies i have seen failed to really grab my attention, but near everything looks better in motion.
2) how good are the skirmish modes? that was a major complaint of mine about starcraft.
3) what is lag like? im on a 56k aol conection here, so im not holding up much hope, but is it playable at all?
4) what is the build tree and research like? aol style (millions of stuff that take years to research) or red alert style (build for 20 mins and you have everything you need).
5) how detailed is the hero leveling like? and do your heros get transported from one level to the next in campaign mode?
cheers

well they showed a new gimli model in one of those pics so...
do you really think that GW can resist the tempation to make another 4 models showing them as they appear in TTT?
BTW, shouldnt this thread be moved to the movies section, seeing as how it is almost totally taken up with movie stuff.

hmmm. i agree with tage here.
thoughts :
1) "use of non tolkien weaponary" - this is common sense. if you are fighting cavalry, crossbows work better due to how they fly. arrows go up, so miss. crossbow bolts go along, so the cavalry ride into them. makes sense to me.
2) "elves at helms deep" - good change. it fits in with the theme, despite what the author guy says - it shows the elves, small in number though they are, using their supperior skills and abilities to affect the outcome of the battle, and therefore the war. the idea of the elves sitting in rivendell and twiddling their thumbs has always annoyed me. besides, it says it in a way that makes it seem like only 20 elves are going. 20 elves, against 10,000 orks, are not going to make a overwhelming difference.
3) "legolas using two knives". pfffff. get real.
4) "legolas using a shield as a surfing board" - please no. this violates the air of the books.
5) "no ent draught" - pffff. ill live.
6) "sauruman and death spikky thing" - this i dislike. hopefully that pic is a fake. or a cutting room reject.
7) "This line is an invention of the filmmakers and does not represent Tolkien’s work." - this person really needs to look at other film/book conversions. it is expected. LoTR is not some holy book, whose writ is unchangeable. watching a 7 hour perfect copy of fellowship is not my idea of a good time. as jackson has said : "this is my take on the books. that is what i am filming. i can only hope that others agree with me and like my film."
8)"The filmmakers may portray Gandalf’s resurrection in a way different from how Tolkien would have visualized it." - huh? this seems to be a far far better method - and to be honest, who cares what tolkien envisaged? as long as they stick reasonably close to the description in the books, it should be pretty much the same anyway.
9)"Éowyn and Aragorn Cross Swords" - dont like this. seems unneeded.

wowsa. sorry about the long post guys. just my multiple pennies.
